Hi BrownEyedTigre smile

I have been wondering, ever since I read your post on the Adventure Board, if you know WHY some Gameboomer members leave here to go "permanently" post on Facebook instead.

Obviously it's their choice but I am interested in their reasons for doing so.

Cheers.

Mad yes

I post on FB since I have family members and friends that post; it's a lot cheaper than a phone call. I also tend to be a peacefully political and enjoy some of the clean humor. I don't post questions about games nor do I play FB games.

A huge reason is that FB is easy to use, share and post and it's mobile. We lost a few members because their PC's aren't working or they are busy and post on the fly via their phone.

The other reasons are people can get the audience they want to share with. YOu can share photos and life moments and restrict each post individually on who gets to see it. From one person only, to public/world wide. Anything you post here is available to all, members and non members.

Honestly, one of my thoughts was to see how hard it would be to create a GB mobile app that would allow people to post easily from their phones. It would be way down the road, but a thought.

I can understand the part about posting "on the fly via their phone" but otherwise I don't get it either. (Mad, I had been wondering pretty much the same thing.) I mean, I get FB to stay in touch with friends and relatives, but why there for GB instead of just here at GB? (Other than the already forementioned "on the fly".)

I've clicked on the link at the top of the page and it seems to be the same content but not as good as being here. I can't see it all too well since I don't have a FB account but, I still don't get it.

Oldbroad, GB's FB page is not where the conversations take place. They mostly take place on people's own FB page. When you join, you get your own and others come to you or you go to them. Then there are groups depending on your tastes. I admin 2 photography groups on FB that are private (members only) and we talk and share about our photos without fear of having them stolen. There are Sierra groups where they just discuss Sierra groups and others. The list is endless. YOu can join as many groups as you like and it is all visible at your fingertips. From Hot Rods to insects to adventure games, whatever you fancy is available under one roof.

Honestly, if you aren't on it, and don't use all the features, it is difficult to understand. I happen to be a FB lover and it has connected with many people including those that I grew up with and lost contact with.

I am a judicious FB user. I thoroughly enjoy it to stay in touch with my family since I live 600 miles away. I get to share milestones such as baptisms and first days of school and the middle school dance from a distance. But I also am part of a couple of gaming FB groups. We can share whatever we want at any time with no chance of anyone else intruding. I administer our American Legion FB page where we share events at the Post and post pictures of things such as benefits and our Memorial Day observance.

Our Longmeadow Rescue Ranch FB page has helped in a large surge in awareness of our rescues and in our adoptions. It is used heavily by many thousands of people.

FB can be a wonderful tool for many things. You just have to be cautious and aware that it can also be use for less positive things. One rule of thumb is to never post anything you wouldn't want others to see.

Yes indeed Draclvr...that is rule #1 for "anything" posted/sent electronically on "any" device by "any" body

I have to admit that if it wasn't for business reasons, I wouldn't use Facebook. But in this day and age, social media is the new Yellow Pages, and Facebook is a necessary part of doing business. It has its benefits - I connected with friends and family I hadn't talked to in over 30 years. Now I am comfortable using it as a method of personal communication, but am very careful about what I post.

Well, since my internet went out as I was trying to post my reply, it got lost!

I think MaG told me one time how to try to retrieve a post but I can't remember how.

Obviously folk can choose to "frequent" whatever sites they wish but I do feel quite sad that some members have chosen to permanently move over to Facebook and not remain part of the Gameboomer Community sad

I love GameBoomers! There is too much out there with FB, Twitter, etc. for me. To much "thumbing" and "heads down"!
We have a nice group of people at GB that really care about each other. We've gotten to know each other and shared both the good and difficult times over the years. Games were the start of GB but the adventure of meeting new people from all over the world still makes it a special place for me. MaG and all the Moderators and volunteers have created a special place for me and for that reason alone I prefer GB! bravo

I'm with you, Gerry. There are a couple of GB members who are now also FB friends. I really enjoy Joe's daily postings here and appreciate the opportunity to get info on games and help with problems. I don't often post in Mixed Bag, but like to read what others are talking about. I have lots of FB friends, but sometimes find the newsfeed overwhelming. It's nice to have GB when I just want info about games I'm interested in or need help. As far as personal relationships, I prefer FB and usually use messaging for private matters. I'm just the sort that likes to keep my personal business to myself or within a tight circle of friends.

I think it's sad that people can't find the time to do both, Mad.

Although in the end I prefer the forums, I don't find it sad at all that people have chosen to use FB instead. I use both, but many people don't spend that much time in front of a computer any more. At least folks are still participating in conversations about their interests somewhere!

The way we communicate is changing. I am old and I don't like a great deal of it! Such as the heads down and constant thumbs going to the detriment of face-to-face communication. I love that my grandkids are not allowed to do this... phones are only used during personal time, not during time with family and friends. But I certainly recognize the new technology and use as much of it as I can. Most of it, I love!

I have a flip phone for use away from home and a landline at home. I don't text. I find typing on a mobile phone to be tedious. I primarily use my iPad for e-mail, shopping online, FB, etc. My PC is mostly for gaming. But I'm retired and have plenty of time to do my communicating from home. For me, investing in a more sophisticated phone would be a waste of money.

My home computer is on all day but not in 'prime time' for television at night. I only have a landline listed, but do have a cheapo cell phone with prepaid minutes that I carry strictly for emergency use. No one has my number on that because I don't want anyone calling. It's always turned off (saves battery) unless I'm stranded somewhere. Not a casual user of phones, I don't even know if I can text from it. Never tried. headscratch

Just to be clear .... grin

I didn't start this thread to criticise in any way the "ever moving forward" technology of today.

Rather, I just got to wondering why people felt the need to leave Gameboomers and use Facebook instead rather than as well whistle

Same here, Sorta.

And that's my puzzlement too, Mad. I can see folks using both, but am not entirely clear on why they would not also post here (unless it's a question of time constraints).

I didn't take it as a criticism at all, Mad! grin I think some of us are just trying to explain why some people prefer social media to the forums. Marian, I think there is an element of what technology people are using in the answer too. Cell phones are now small computers and many people seem to prefer them. Me? I tell people, I can build you a computer; I can most probably fix your computer; but I don't "do" cell phones! I have a cheap ($75) older LG smartphone which use with Tracfone. I do use it to text with my sister and brother up in Iowa concerning my mom, but that's about it. I never carry it with me anywhere, although I should sometimes. Just can't be bothered... Plus, if I carried a purse, I guarantee I would leave it somewhere!

Totally understood that Mad. And I get people using FB for family and friends but not to replace GB. As Ana said, if you aren't on it, it is difficult to understand.

I won't say I will never use it; I've considered it from time to time as I know my more current friends are on it and I like to see what they're up to and because I know some of my old, ancient friends are on it that I have lost touch with, and I would like to see what they are up to also but I'm pretty sure I would be more of a lurker than a participant lol

I don't feel that I would care to worry about GB on FB. I would rather just come here!

I wish that I had been more hands on when digital stuff started becoming big. As it is now, I don't know how to use any of it and am a little afraid of what the future holds. My brain doesn't learn very well any more.

I use both..like both... on FaceBook I have a closed group that consists of my horse friends... we share information..and fun stuff... and very serious stuff if one is in trouble with their horse... I post pictures on FB of my horses and videos... that would consume too much band width here... I have a different set of Friends there that are not into gaming... and I have friends there that are gamer's and post here. I would hate to give up either... both fill my needs in different ways...
