You may have noticed that when you uninstall and reinstall a casual game, that your save profiles are still there.
That's not what I'm talking about.
What I'm interested in is being able to revert to a previous save point in a game you're playing -- going back to a previous point in the game without having to start all over.
Has anyone figured out how to do this?
I notice that games put files outside the game folder.
For example, in XP I see folders with the name of the developer or co-developer in
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\
C:\Documents and Settings\my-username\Application Data\
I assume these are the save folders -- sprinkled around wherever the developers feel like putting them. Some of them have .txt or .dat files that contain what I recognize as game settings -- for example, profile name, music volume, custom cursors (true or false), fullscreen or windowed, etc.
In Vista and later Windows these folders seem to show up in one of the subfolders of
C:\Users\***\Application Data\
where *** is your username, All Users, Administrator, etc.
Has anyone tried to back up the contents of these folders before a playing session, and then restoring to the previous contents after playing? I'm curious whether this could be successful with any game or whether it will just mess up the game (which is possible if the game spreads save information around to other folders or the registry).
