Hello.

I had just started playing this game in Windows XP. I ran into a timed puzzle and apparently clicked to fast or on too many things and got some error which crashed the game. I cannot tell you what the error was as the game closed to my desktop. Now it won't open again.

I uninstalled it and reinstalled it but it still won't open.

Any (easy) suggestions?

Thanks.

Maybe use ccleaner after uninstalling to remove any possibly corrupt registry entries.

You might also try to locate where the game is putting saves, and delete the latest one (or move it outside of the game's save folder), in case the problem is a corrupt save that the game is trying to detect when starting up.

Are you using compatibility mode?

Do you have the older Infogrames version in the red box (from 1997) or the newer version in the DVD case from 2001? I'm not sure if there is a difference but the listed system requirements are slightly different.

Does the game use QuickTime? If it does, you might try uninstalling and reinstalling the version of QuickTime that came with the game.

If I can get ccleaner over to the XP, I will try that.

Don't see any save files. See a folder called PILSAV but no saves in it. I figured they were removed when I uninstalled but can try to look around some more.

I did not use compatibility mode. When I looked in properties, it showed 95.

I don't think it is either of those versions. It is 2 CD's in a jewel case, arxel tribe, Selectsoft Publishing 2001.

It was working fine until I got in a hurry with the timed puzzle.

Should I see a Pilgrim.exe file someplace? I don't see one of those anywhere either.

I did the ccleaner but that didn't change anything.

I tried compatibility mode for 95 and 98/me but that didn't change anything.

When I look in Control Panel under add/remove programs, Pilgrim is not even listed, but it is listed in my Programs and it did show installation successful.

I just got back from having a ~2hr power outage -- was typing in something to add to my post and now I forgot what it was.

I don't have the game installed, but the desktop shortcut should point to whatever it's using as an .exe. Of course it might be pointing to a loader that in turn starts the game's .exe.

EDIT -- remembered what I forgot --
If the game uses QuickTime, you might have to uninstall and reinstall the version of QuickTime that came with the game. Be sure to use the registry cleaner in ccleaner after uninstalling QuickTime.

EDIT again -- Some games use weird installers that never show up in Add/Remove Programs but have an uninstaller in the game folder, or if you autoplay the CD they give the option to Uninstall.

Sorry about your power outage.

I don't believe it uses QuickTime. I don't see anything regarding that.

There is an uninstaller in the game folder.

Do you think restarting my computer might help? Does the game play in Windows 7?

EDIT: I restarted the computer and the game is working. Don't know why I didn't think of that in the first place. I wonder if it would have worked after the crash without uninstalling and reinstalling. I lost my saves now. Oh well, wasn't too far in anyway. I think I'll be using the walkthrough going forward though.

Thanks Jenny.

Did you run CCleaner on the registry too? That may remove any stray registry entries.

I ran it ONLY on the registry, just on the Pilgrim references. I am afraid of CCleaner. Everything is always checked and I don't know if it should be. I unchecked everything except the Pilgrim stuff.

Anyway, the computer restart is what got me going again.

Thanks Drac.
