My new favorite TV series. Its not new, except to me. Its on its 7th season. I watched reruns on the ID channel then decided to watch all 6 seasons on ID Go. I did it on PC not smartphone because a) I don't care for video on tiny screens and B) videos drain the smart phone battery too much). It runs Wendesday nights. 8PM central. However its off this week. Fifth episode of the current season will be air in October.

Joe Kenda retired from the Colorado Springs, CO police department in 1996 after having solved 387 homicides, with a 92% success rate. He's still haunted by the ones he was not able to solve.

The series alternates between the real Joe Kenda talking about the case (or cases) of the episode and reenactments of the investigation featuring former sheriff's deputy turned model turned actor Carl Marino playing the younger Lt Kenda.

Other people involved in the investigations also appear to give their take on the investigations, mostly police officers and a retired reporter.

The real Joe Kenda does not pull punches. According to him you are most likely to be murdered at 1:21 AM on a Wednesday. And the best ways to avoid being murdered area:
1 do not buy, sell or take drugs or associate with people who do (in fact most gun related murders involve drugs)
2 do not be coming out of bars at closely time because "nothing good happen after midnight" (that's one of his favorite quotes)
3 try to marry well. Do not marry a psychopath.

Joe Kenda's catch phrase is "My my my".
Other lines: "Crazy boyfrend did you say? oh, I like crazy boyfriends" (as a suspect he means)
"If you're gonna lie to me, you should at least have the decency to be good at it"
"Not only are you the worst liar I've ever seen, you also have the IQ of a turnip".
And when told a suspect was an a-hole "well, I'm certainly looking for one of those".
"I get a report on my way to a crime scene that people are running from [that] crime scene, well, people running from crimes scenes interest me."
"I think about all the things I've done. All the things I've seen and can not unsee." He's seen murder with ever object imaginable except a nuclear device. Guns only used in about 40% of murders (60% of suicides).

He says doing this show is therapeutic as was writing his book which is coming out this week.

Joe Kenda on doing the show

I like Joe Kenda too. Something about his calm voice and the way he tells his 'stories'.

WARNING! This person is extremely blonde...please type SLOWLY.

Sometimes the fans know more about a show than the actors. Someone posted on Facebook a picture of Carl Marino as younger Lt Joe Kenda holding a black pistol and asked how it should be captioned. I said "Okay which one of you guys replaced my stainless steel Kimber 1911 with this?"

Carl Marino who is on FB (Joe Kenda is not) asked me how I could know what gun Lt Kenda carried. I told him because he talks about it one episode.

I don't fault him for not knowing. For one thing they probably film Joe Kenda's interviews separately from his sequences and I had the time to binge watch the entire series.

Now he's saying the Kimber shown is actually his personal gun not Joe's. Which makes sense' Joe's been retired for years.

Actually in the 1970 Joe Kenda was probably carrying a revolver (357 mag or 38 special). Most police didn't switch to pistols until 1980s. Now they mostly carry 9mm Glocks. And Glock fanbyos they dont carry Glocks because they're better than other brands, they carry Glocks because they're less expensive. That 1911 Kimber would have cost nearly $1k because they're made out of steel and they have to be made to very close tolerances to function properly. While those Glocks are made of a light weight polymer (a kind of plastic), they're cheaper to make thus can sell for less.

I wouldn't want to carry a Glock because I wouldn't trust a semi auto pistol without a trigger safety.

Oh NO! Joe Kenda has announced that season 9 coming in August is the final season of Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda. He said the though he's solved nearly 400 cases, many of the remaining cases are either too simple for television or too disguising for television. So he's ending it with season 9. frown

Both videos were posted on Facebook neither appear to be on Youtube yet.

Sad to say tonight's episode was the finale episode. There are two cases The first involves the deaths of a family of three including a five year old boy. The boy was wearing the same style of pajamas his son wore at that age. And the case haunts him to this day. The second is in August 1996, the sexual assault of a five year old boy by a 74 year old man. Kenda loses it and has to have other officers take the man out of his sight. He goes to his desk and types out his resignation effective, September 1, 1996.

The episode is unique in that it includes reenactments not only of his case but also of Kenda's nightmares. And reveals to the audience that he for years he suffered from PTS. Doing the series, talking about murders he investigate has helped him. After he retired from the Colorado Spring's police department he became of all things a school bus driver of special needs children from 1998-2008.

Joe Kenda married his high school sweetheart Mary Kathleen "Kathy" Mohler December 26, 1967. She worked as an emergency room nurse for years. They had two children a son Dan who has since retired as a US Navy Commander and a daughter Kris, a retired Air Force Major.

Good bye, Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda. I'm going to miss you.
