Emotive new video ‘An Open Letter’ released to celebrate the launch

View the Video here.

Quote:
LONDON (August 31, 2017) – SQUARE ENIX®, publisher of award-winning and best-selling videogame franchises such as FINAL FANTASY® and TOMB RAIDER®, today released an emotive new video that features real people, with real, genuine stories of friendship and love to celebrate the launch of LIFE IS STRANGE™: BEFORE THE STORM, out now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC.

The three-minute video, entitled “An Open Letter”, was been created to reflect the strong themes of friendship, love and support in the game.

In LIFE IS STRANGE: BEFORE THE STORM, Chloe and Rachel develop a special bond over the time they spend together. Almost everyone can name that one person who defined a very special time of their life. In some cases, these relationships can span a few short months and in other cases, decades. To celebrate the release of Episode One, we invited a small group of real people to write an open letter to that special person in their own life…

Square Enix Vice President for Brand Marketing Jon Brooke said: "I wanted to capture the emotion and spirit of Life is Strange in a way that you don't usually see in video game advertising. As a game, it braves to be different, harnessing emotions rarely seen in video games and I wanted the advertising to match this. I am really pleased with how it turned out. It's designed to remind us that life is all about our relationships and a strong friendship can change everything. I hope everyone can relate to that."

Creative Agency, Ralph, spent many weeks reaching out to pairs of best friends, asking for stories and insights into how their friendship had lasted through even the toughest of times.

““We took a risk with this strategy and we wouldn’t have achieved the emotion within the video had we not chosen some extraordinary people willing to open their hearts on camera,” admitted Ralph’s Creative Director Gregor Stevenson. “The raw intensity of their reactions as they read their best friends’ innermost thoughts is what we wanted to capture from the start. And that’s what we got. Our goal was to portray each friendship in an engaging and empathetic way, whilst reflecting the authenticity and uniqueness of the characters in the game.”

LIFE IS STRANGE: BEFORE THE STORM is the next game in Square Enix’s award-winning, multi-million copy selling, episodic franchise. Set in Arcadia Bay, three years before the events of the first game in the series. Players will take on the role of a rebellious 16 year-old Chloe Price who forms an unlikely friendship with Rachel Amber; a beautiful and popular girl destined for success. When Rachel’s world is turned upside down by a family secret, it takes this new-found alliance to give each other the strength to overcome their demons.

Happy Gaming!

venus, how is your first impression of Before the Storm compared to the original game?

Are there any new elements in game?

Twelve hours (?) sounds like a decent length for the whole game if the other two episodes have equal length.

I have never bought any episodic game before all the episodes are published and I'm not making any exception even now. Not that I doubt it will never finish but I like to play the whole game at one stand. Another reason is that I don't want to keep anything simply waiting for new content and reserving space on my 256 GB SSD C-drive. I believe the episodes carry some decisions from episode to episode and therefore old episodes need to be installed to play new ones, right? Or at least have save file(s) available, like with The Walking Dead?

TJL, I think it feels very much like the original game. It looks very similar, and the interface is nearly identical. Although instead of the click and drag mechanic (which always reminded me of the verb coin in The Curse of Monkey Island), you now hold the left mouse button and press the W,A,S or D key, depending on which action you want to perform. (I changed mine to the arrow keys, just because I'm more comfortable with this. One thing that does annoy me is I have to re-select this every time I start the game. I think it's a minor bug in the system, though, as the arrow keys work just fine when I'm walking around.) The game does have 3 save slots. You have to go into Settings to change from one save to another. It should save your decisions from one episode to another, yes. smile I believe all episodes have to be installed if you're playing the full game (plus, I don't think Steam will only let you have one episode installed anyway, once more come out), but the game should fit on your hard drive as long as you don't have a lot installed on it already.

I think they did a great job with Chloe's character, and even more impressively, they did a fantastic job with Rachel Amber's character. She came across as someone who was very charismatic and mesmerizing, a bit a social chameleon who could charm everyone around her. However, once you got to know her, you saw her as deeply flawed, which is pretty much how I interpreted her based on what we knew of her in the first game. In many ways, for me at least, she fills the role that Chloe did in the first game, although they are very different characters. I also like how they're developing the Chloe and Rachel relationship, though one criticism I have is that it seems a bit rushed. For the most part, I like where they're going with it, though.

A new element is Chloe's "backtalk" mechanic, which I suppose is her "power." lol It involves listening to what other characters say and coming back with winning arguments based on their words. I think it works well, although the timer for picking a response is a bit fast. (This is the only place where the dialogue is timed.) I was able to manage all of them, but I've read some posts on Steam where people were having trouble with them. The game won't penalize you for this, though, and you don't even have to use it at all.

The episode lasted a long time for me, as I like to explore everything and talk to everyone. There were a few optional conversations in this game, although the original had a lot more, and I missed that. This is one of my other minor complaints. Still I suppose, in a way, this means the main story is longer. Episode 1 of the original lasted the same amount of time for me, and there were more optional interactions, so in a way, it's a trade off. There was one optional game you could play with two other characters that I thought was a lot of fun. I like all of the new characters they've introduced, and it's fun to see some of the old characters before they became who they were in the original game.

Also, if you're waiting for the game to be out in full, you may want to wait for the additional Farewell episode, where you play as Max. This takes place before the prequel, so it depends on if you want to order the deluxe version to begin with, and how much you would consider the episode as part of the "full game." Anyway, all of this may have been a longer response than you wanted, so my short answer is if you liked the first game, you will probably enjoy this one. smile It had an interesting backstory, and there is something mysterious going on that is hinted at when you get to the end of the episode. It's probably going to be a smaller story than the original, but it should still be a good sized game.

venus, thank you so much for your deep overview! I like your style to write, it's so easy to follow and well constructed! smile

I really liked the original game and it's nice to hear you are satisfied with the new one and feel they are heading to the right direction. That sounds promising thinking about the other new game under development, too.

I'm sure I will fetch both new games in the series when they come out in full.

That must be very annoying to have to reconfigure keys to your liking each time you start the game. I believe it's only a temporary hiccup, though, and will soon be fixed.

I like to play with gamepad when ever the game supports one. The mechanic with mouse and keys for selection you describe sounds like a bit clumsy substitute for gamepad buttons. Have you ever tried playing with a gamepad? I'm tending to believe new games published for both PC and consoles use more and more same controls in the future. For me personally another reason to use a gamepad is that I like to play in an armchair where holding a keyboard and a mouse in a comfortable way would be impossible.

What it comes to the space needed, 14 GB sounds quite much. But I doubt it will not double or triple along new episodes. The times when 5 GB was enough for a dozens of hours long game with top graphics are still no so far in the past. Nowadays it is not so rare for a new game to need 60-70 GB. You don't put more than two of those on a 256 GB SSD C-drive along all the mandatory stuff. They also take awfully long time to download on a 'standard' 20/1 Mbps line.

Is there anybody here who knows straight away if it is possible to install Steam games on different drives per game? What I am thinking is that it would sometimes make sense to install some games on my 2 TB traditional HDD D-drive if in-game loading time is not essential.

Happy gaming venus and other fellow boomers! smile

Timo

Thanks Marian, and you're welcome. smile

Thanks, TJL, and glad I could help! One of these days, I will have to get a gamepad. I've heard from numerous sources that they're easier to use than a keyboard and mouse.

As for the 14 gig of space, I'm pretty sure that's for the full game, not just the first episode. From what I remember, episode 1 only downloaded a little over 3, maybe 3 1/2 gig, and it didn't take too long. The entire game should fit on your hard drive without an issue, unless you have some of those larger games you mentioned installed at the same time. smile I'm a little more concerned about The Last Crown: Blackenrock, which apparently needs 40 gig of hard drive space. I have a 2 TB hard drive, and that sounds like a lot even for me. lol Of course, I keep a lot of games installed on my computer. Since you have a small drive, and it sounds like you install and remove things fairly frequently, I think you should be okay.

Unfortunately, I don't know the answer to your other question. My only suggestion is to try it and see if it works. If not, you can always put it back on your C drive. You may also try asking in glitches, as they may have an answer for you. smile

Enjoy the game when it's all out! smile

I enjoyed playing the first game, and I'm looking forward to this game also. I haven't gotten around to playing the episode yet, as I'm still working on The Walking Dead Season 3.

To be honest, I was a little disappointed with the first episode.
Maybe much of the story line was lost on me as I'm a long, long way away from being a teenager.
As a game it was far too simple.
