I can't find much about running this game on Windows 7.
A single person at Amazon said they couldn't get it to work with Windows 7, but gave no details about whether they tried compatibility mode or anything.

cazziejoe, if by 'Jack the RIpper-2003' you mean the game by Galiléa that is actually 2004 - yes, it is protected by an old StarForce version that is incompatible with Windows 7.

But that means you just have to run it via a no-cd fixed EXE - I have just tried it in Windows 7 x64 and got no problems at all! (Although mine is the Russian version - but I don't think that US edition should be much different.)

In fact, I don't remember any adventure game not running in Windows 7 with that tweak or another.

The English language version did not use StarForce.
According to GCW it used "CD Checks".
GCW identifies StarForce by name if a game has it.

Also, StarForce had the somewhat unusual property of installing itself the first time you run the game instead of during the game installation. Jack the Ripper did not do that. The first time you ran the game, it did not have the prompts that StarForce gave when installing.

There's a review on eBay where someone was running Jack the Ripper on Vista and saves didn't work. If the game had had StarForce, it wouldn't have started at all. Vista and later versions of Windows prevent StarForce v3 from installing.

You can try using a NoCD if you want, but I don't think the copy "protection" is the problem here -- not with the English version anyway.

There are several games where the Russian version used StarForce while other language versions used something else -- probably because StarForce was a Russian company.

Jenny100, that's quite possible!
As for the savegames - they just have a different default location in XP and in Windows 7, so that's not a problem as well.

The review was ***here***. Scroll down to see the reviews.
The reviewer's problem was that he or she couldn't save at all on Vista -- a problem that might have been fixable by changing the default installation location or by using compatibility mode.

One of the best things about the game was hearing the singer sing, and one common bug at the time of release was that the game skipped the cut scenes where you heard her sing.

I don't know the best version of Windows for playing the game. According to the game box it should work with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP. I don't know if the Windows version affected your likelihood of getting the bug. I got the bug when using Windows 98, and had to replay using a walkthrough (to follow the most direct playthrough route) to hear the singer sing "Three Ravens."

It would be interesting to know if the game could be made to play using Vista/7/8.x/10 and whether it will play the cut scenes with the songs correctly. This is a hard game to find information about because there are so many unrelated links that come up with a search for "Jack the Ripper." It's hardly a unique name for a game.

Sorry.
Thanks I got it to work.
You have to set the monitor resolution the same as the game before you start.

Let us know if you're able to play it through on Windows 7 without problems. If you can, we'll add it to the Windows 7 and Games thread with a note about the resolution.

Works fine but voice cuts out ocasionly. Not a problem if you put on subtitles.

Hate to hijack this thread but has anyone found a solution to the voice bug?

There is also a possibility of cut scenes not playing.
Around the time the game came out, players were having problems with cut scenes being skipped -- especially those that included Abigail singing. Abigail should have had 3 songs, but unless you were looking at the walkthrough and noted where it said "Abigail sings," you might not have realized anything was missing. It was too bad, because the singer had a great voice, and her singing was an interesting contrast to what went on in the game. Unfortunately the developer (Galilea) went out of business and wasn't around to fix the problem.

The skipped videos didn't seem to be a repeatable bug. The same computer might skip a video one time, and not skip it the next, even when following a walkthrough step by step and doing things in the exact same order.

If this game is the Digital Jesters release, I found it on Ebay by adding Digital Jesters to the title smile
[It was on Amazon as well - but mostly the German version.]

It was published by "The Adventure Company" (aka Dreamcatcher) in the US. According to Mobygames' picture of the UK DVD case, it was published by Microids in the UK.
http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/jack-the-ripper-/cover-art

The UK version sold at amazon.co.uk lists it with "Digital Jesters" despite that the version pictured says Microids and Galilea, like the uk version at Mobygames.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Jack-the-Ripper-PC-CD/dp/B0000WZQGQ/qid=1508013105

I'm not seeing anything about Digital Jesters on the box or DVD case. I wonder if Amazon didn't confuse it with a different game.

Digital Jesters was one of those bad companies that didn't pay developers. There's even something about it at Wikipedia.

There are some interesting links in Wikipedia's references about the court cases against Digital Jesters.

Both myself and my friend were able to play the game on Windows 7 with no problems, but as Jenny100 mentioned re: No CD fix, when we played the game without it we had some problems with voice skipping in some areas, when we played it with the NO CD fix, then the voice skipping went away at least for us, must have something to do with the Game feed from the CD to the HD, etc.

Hi smile

All the talk about this old Jack the Ripper game has made me want to play it again !!
So I've installed it on my Win7 machine and it runs OK.
Apart from the speech bug, of course rolleyes

[I didn't have to change the screen resolution prior to launching. It's playing on 1280x1024 fine so far.]

However, as I've never used a NO CD fix before and certainly have no idea where to find the one I would need, can I ask for some help, please ??

Cheers.

Mad grin

Google for
Jack the Ripper NoCD
to find possible sources of a NoCD for the game.

I have one. It's small enough to email. I can send it to you. Is the email listed in your profile correct?
