Feeling bad for you, but I know the pain of it all. Had my identity stolen twice. Wasn't fun to fix but I did it myself, took time, fingerprints, signing and notarizing of documents, copies of my Driver License, Passport, birth certificate, etc. Start with calling the credit card company, save all the paperwork about the 'new' account if you have any. Usually the card company will start an investigation and ask you for proof that it wasn't your card.
AND look around for 'friends' who might have had access to your identification stuff. I had a friend stay at my house, she let her male friend stay (I was out of town), and HE stole some of my checks. Got that one sorted out too after I threatened to call the cops on both of them. You never know what people will do when given an opportunity. Sad stuff.
GOOD luck!

In my case, the suspects got duplicate credit cards with MY name but had ID's (also with my name but their pictures)! Was really a sophisticated crew. 3 different charge cards all with proper ID according to the clerks when I contacted the stores. They did this in Los Angeles when I lived in San Diego. Clever people. Those bills came never came to me, but to whatever address they changed the cards to. I guess they just did a change of address.
Bill collectors if unsuccessful at the 'mailing address' then start looking for relatives or others with the same name at different addresses. The hunt you down. My neighbor still gets calls and letters asking for overdue bills in the name of a former daughter-in-law who never lived at her address. Drives her nuts.
