Reah: Face the Unknown

Schizm: Mysterious Journey

Both of them are the DVD versions. And both are being sold at a very nice price. wave

It will be interesting to see how well these versions do in Windows 7/8/10. The originals didn't work on anything later than XP for me, and even then had audio problems.

This will probably be the first time many people in the US can get the DVD versions. In North America, Schizm DVD had to be special ordered online direct from Dreamcatcher back around the time of release. I don't think Reah DVD was released in the US at all, though it may have been available from import shops.

It will also be interesting to see if the DVD version of Schizm has the introductory video restored. The Dreamcatcher DVD replaced the introductory video with voice-over text.

I also read a review earlier this morning (and now I can't remember which of the games it was), saying that some puzzles had been left out of the CD version, I guess due to space considerations.

I think it was only a couple of puzzles omitted.
There were also some story bits left out -- where you found mission logs in the DVD version, most of these were left out of the CD version.

The DVD version was actually 2 DVD's worth, where the CD version was (edit) 4 CD's 5 CD's (edit). The biggest difference was in the graphics, which were much sharper in the DVD version in most locations.

The CD version had an option to fully install to the hard drive and play directly off the hard drive, where the DVD version had to have a disc in the drive. At one point someone (I think one of the developers) posted instructions for how to install the DVD version fully to the hard drive and edit a config file (or was it a registry edit?) in order to play without the disc in the drive. Since my hard drive wasn't large enough at the time, I didn't copy down the instructions.

The CD version of Schizm is actually 5 CD's. I have this game but (of course) never played it. I think I bought it used.

Never played Reah either and don't have it.

Thanks Marian!

You're right. It's on 5 CD's. I misspoke.

It's sort of a Riven-style game -- difficult but with logical puzzles. Harder than Riven I think.

Reah wasn't as good puzzlewise, and there were places you could be killed without warning.
Both had interesting architecture, as you can see from some of the screenshots. The living "ships" in Schizm looked amazing back in 2001 at the time of release.

Thanks Jenny. I went to GOG and bought them both. Whether I ever get around to playing them remains to be seen. smile

Hi Boomers,
Just purchased, downloaded and installed REAH from GOG. I still have the original version somewhere on my shelf, not sure if it's the 5 disc version or the DVD. I also printed the walkthrough by our very own Mag. Just starting to play it. A lot of moving around here, but the WT map is a great help.

Reah or Szhizm Sandy? I don't see a MaG walkthrough for Reah, but I do see one for Schizm.

OOPS, I may be mistaken about who wrote that WT, Oldbroad. I always seem to equate FANTASTIC=MAG. I appreciate your correction of my "facts", though.
And I thought I was SO "perfect" till now. LOL

Sandy, I'm sure you are perfect. wink I was not trying to "correct" you, just wondering though if I missed something or if you might have typed Reah instead of Schizm. Just clarification, not correction.

No, Oldbroad,
I purchased only REAH, so I stand by my mistake admitting that I'm really not perfect (only most of the time) LOL

Someone on the GoG forums said it's the European DVD version, with the introductory video that for some strange reason was missing in the the US release. I have both DVD-versions but had trouble getting the game to work in XP. It froze constantly. Will give it a go now since it's definitely a type of game I love.

I have both the CD and DVD-versions of Reah somewhere but of course had to buy that one too.

Note that A.D. 2044 from the same developer is on Gog too. It was free for the first 48 hours.
