I know somewhere there was a thread listing games that will play with XP, but can't seem to find it. Since I will be getting a new computer in the next couple of months, I'd like to see that list again. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction? I wonder if it would be useful (or possible in some form) to have an ongoing list regarding games and Win XP, perhaps listing games that WON'T/WILL play under XP, since there seem to be problems with this particular OS and older games. There are so many of us that have older games sitting around, or are actively seeking some of those older games that would find this information very helpful in deciding whether to purchase a game or not.

Mary I don't know if the helps, But I have gotten a lot of older games to run on my XP with a little tweaking and very few Problems. The ones I can't get to run at all are: - Amber: Jouneys Beyond
- Blue Heat
- Panic in The Park
The ones I can are: - Alfred Hitchcock: The Final Cut
- American Mcgee's Alice
(absolutely beautiful music and Graphics ...I played in God mode to make it more adventure game like heeheehe!) - Auryn Quest
- Bad Mojo
- The Black Cauldron
- Beyond Time
- The Crystal Key
- Dark Fall
- Dark Eye
- Darkseed (with some Tweaking)
- Dark Passages Vol 1....This includes Darkseed/The Psychotron & The Wrath on the Demon
- The Forgotton
- Fork in the Tale
- Gabriel Knoght:The Sins of The Fathers (with some Tweaking ...can't save...yet)
- Gabriel Knight II:The Beast Within
- Gabriel Knight II: Blood of the Sacred; Blood of the Dammned
- Ghosts
- Goosebumps:Tale of Orpheo's Curse (the one red sock game!!!Argh!)
- Harry Potter & The Scorcerer's Stone
- Inherent Evil
- The Last Express
- Law & Order:Dead on the Money
- Lighthouse ...with tweaking and patch
- Messenger
- Mystery of The Druids
- Nancy Drew: The Mystery of the Haunted Mansion
- I would hazzard a guess that all the ND's will play on XP
- Necronomicon
- The Neverhood Chronicles
- Nightmare Ned (one of my Favorites!!!)
- Phantasmagoria (needed patch as well)
- Riddle of the Sphinx
- Ring
- Ripper
(With an enormous amount of whinning and pleading and possibly a sacrifice or two to the Adventure Gaming Gods!!!) - Safecraker
- Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Rose Tattoo (with some Tweaking)
- Sherlock Holmes: The Case of the Serrated Scalpel (with some tweaking)
- Shivers
- Shivers II (with some Tweaking)
- Simon
- Syberia
- Temujin
- Thief Gold (you have to bypass NT for this one to run)
- Timelapse
- Ultimate Haunted House
- Victor Vextor & Yondo: The Vampire's Coffin
There are probably a lot more, these are only the ones I've tried. Inferno (edited 11/07/02 to add new games to the list)

Boy, I go to get a bite of lunch and come back to all these replies! Thanks so much! And Infernoj, what a great list! This is the kind of list I wish we could keep going, since it's almost all Adventure games. Polo, great link. I'll look at it in more depth after work. Witchen, I hadn't seen that list yet. Thanks

Originally posted by Marso: Hi Inferno, I see on your list of games you managed to get working on XP was Beyond Time. I have windows XP and it just won't work. Is there something I must do. Hope you see this. It really isn't that difficult to do and only takes a few extra minutes once you get the hang of it. This seems to work with a lot of WIN98 games. - First close ALL extra Windows appications (ie. Screensavers, Firewalls, Virus protection, etc) You can check this by performing the 3 fingered salute. CTRL-ALT-DELETE. But only close those in Programs.
- Put your CD in the Dive. Then bring up My Computer. Right click on your CD Drive and choose either "Open" or "Explore"
- Find the file which looks like a little computer "SETUP.EXE"
- Right Click on the file. Go to "Properties".
- Left Click on "Properties". This will bring up a small window with 3 options. Choose "Compatibility".
- 3 more choices will appear. "compatibility Mode (the first one) is what your looking for.
- Click in the little box and choose "Windows98/ME" from the list.
- Click "Apply". Click "OK".
- Now left click or double click on the SETUP.EXE file.
- When prompted to ask if you want to install Quicktime, choose "NO"
- Choose "NO" as well for the readme file.
- Close down any remaining windows
- Go to START->ALL PROGRAMS->DREAMCATCHER INTERACTIVE->BEYOND TIME.
- There is also a patch you may want to DL (but I didn't need it). Here's the link
The Patch Scrolls Hope this helps: Inferno

Jack Orlando. just wouldn't run, even in compatablity mode. Ended up running it on a Windows ME laptop. This is the orginal version requiring VESA drivers, not the re-released version that I understand works better with various versions of Windows.
Louis Hey Louis! I've got "Simon The Sorcerer" running on XP. Took me long enough! Runs great but had to do major Tweaking. Took me an hour. Hey Bert,
In TLJ are you crashing at the police station stairs, if you are there is a patch or work around for that spot. You can skip the stairs altogether or install the patch. The patch was already on my game, but the help files said not to install it unless the game crashed at this point.

Hi Inferno, Re Beyond Time, I followed your instructions to the letter, but just can't get it to work. It starts o.k, but when i click on the statue, the mouse disappears. Nevermind, Dreamcatcher do say it's not compatible with XP. You are very lucky to get it working. Thanks for trying

Gee. That's odd. How come? I have a PentiumIV/ Creative Sounblaster Live 5.01 (I think) and Nvidia GE Force II. 2Ghz 512RAM. The only thing I could suggest is load the patch the same way. and make sure all the program files in the folder are set to Win98 compatibility mode. So sorry it didn't work for you. Another options is to use Connectix VirtualPC to emulate a particular OS. I've a few friends who use it to emulate a DOS 6.22 environment, and they've had wonderful results getting old games to run. The nice thing about it is being able to run it like any other application, rather than devoting a large chunk of hard drive space to a dual-boot configuration. IIRC, the DOS drive image is all of 15mb. It emulates all the old hardware, regardless of what you've actually got in your system. So instead of playing with XP compatibility mode, you get to play with the old .bat files .gita

Is this VPC some kind of software package that you buy? Is it readily available? It certainly sounds better than having two OS on a computer.

Post Mortem worked fine on XP on my computer with no tweaking at all. The Frankenstein game and Mummy Tomb of the Pharoah (I think someone asked about them earlier) loaded fine and played fine but I haven't finished them--not because of a system crash or anything, but because I got distracted by other games. With Tex Murphy Overseer Director's Cut I was able to play to almost the very end in XP and then near the very end with the room with the maze-like floor (I won't spoil any further) it crashed and I have never been able to fix that. I figure I will load it someday into my computer with WIN95 and play it there. I don't think anyone mentioned this, but I played Black Dahlia fine on XP. I was not able to play Ripper on XP and had to load it eventually on my computer with WIN95 and it played fine there. (just in case someone is making a list). As for Amber, I had absolutely no luck with XP with it and I am thankful I saved my old computer, just so I could play it (It is my favorite all time game!) Starship Titanic works fine on XP for me. It is really hard to tell which older games will work--you just have to pop them in and try them. For example, I thought I would give Kings Quest VII-The Princeless Bride a shot and it worked like a dream on XP. Good luck and happy gaming! Beth (p.s. Make sure you load all of the updates for WinXP when you are alerted because I have found that they really help. Of course, I got this computer a year ago so a newer computer might have all of the older bugs fixed when you get it.)

I'm not so interested in XP myself (I'm getting the latest version of Virtual PC for the Mac) but it seems like there's many folk out there asking if and how to get games running on Microsoft's latest and greatest?
It's a herculean task to try and collate such information. I suspect XP is as sensitive to drivers and updates and versions as other operating systems so a game working on one setup doesn't mean it's going to work for all setups.
Microsoft software is also not necessarily backwards compatible so a newer version of DirectX for example may break games. That may be why DSOTM no longer displays speech prompts for me I suspect.
It'll be good to maintain a searchable database of ways people found to get games running. There is a lot of knowhow here on Boomers.

I think most will. Monkey 4 and Grim Fandango will work anyway. At least other gamers have gotten them to work. And Dreamcatcher lists Sacred Amulet (Aztec) as being compatible, though they list Seven Games (Faust) as being not fully compatible but functional. I can't be sure about the others since there may be a conflict with the DirectX 8.1 that comes with XP.
One other question: will it be enough for me to just copy the save files to then load onto the new computer when I load on the games? I will want to re-load those that will work onto the new computer to play.
Again, I think this will work with most of these games as long as you copy the saves into the right folder. There might be a problem with Gabriel Knight 3 saves though.

Linds-I am playing Shivers on my XP and haven't had any problems with it.
Sequoia-I played Faust all the way through and had NO problems. Great game! Also played GK3 with a slight problem with a freeze but a patch fixed that.

I just bought Beyond Atlantis II a couple of months ago and played it on XP just fine. It said in the requirements that it was for Windows 98/ME/XP. Have fun...it's an interesting game. Marion

Didn't realize that this post was still on the boards. I posted a question (in Glitches) about putting old saves from the old computer onto the new computer, because I was having some difficulties. With a prod from Jenny, and remembering a past experience I figured it out. I loaded the game and made three new saves as you suggested. I then cut and paste my last three saves from the old machine (which I had burned onto a CD) and put these into the same save folder on the new machine. I then deleted the three new saves and renamed the three old ones to the new ones names (had to do two files for each save slot). And it worked like a charm! I remembered that someone had sent me a save a long time ago when I was playing Black Dahlia and got to the corrupted CD. They advised me to re-name the save into one of my old save slots and it worked. So I shall now try it with my other games. Just wanted to pass this on in case someone else has had this problem. I got a message while in the middle of loading on one of my games This version of Windows does not support Direct X But then it continued to load and it seems to be working. I've only been trying out the games to see if the saves are working though and haven't had time to play them much. I think I read somewhere that Windows XP does not use Direct X. If that is true, then how does it run the games that use it? Sequoia

Inferno, Thanks for the info on Blair Witch. I couldn't decide whether to get the trilogy for my son; he uses XP. I may go for it if I find it cheap.

Clandestiny and Pandora's Box, huh? ok ....I'll try to find some time this week to work on it ...I have both of these games. I just finnished playing a great game called Blackstone Chronicles on my XP had to do some minor tweaking: - Uninstalled all versions of Quicktime, then installed the version that came with the game
- Did not install DirectX6 (kept my version)
- Right clicked for Compatibility mode for the shortcut to the program. Selected the following: Win98 and then checked the box marked : Disable visual themes and the box marked:Turn off advanced services for this program.
Worked like a charm. What a marvelously creepy game. I'm going to add it to my XP compatible list on my webpage. Inferno

There is a pagefile.sys file (for NT/2K/XP machines). This file is your swap file (virtual memory).
Page swapping is the use of virtual memory (space on the HD to mimic having more RAM... it is slower than RAM, but used in emergencies when RAM runs out).
That's funny, John Saul's Blackstone Chronicles loaded just fine on XP for me without having to use compatibility mode or any tweaks to normal configuration. Great game.

Does anyone know about the Monkey Island games? I'm playing 4, so I know that one works okay, but how about 1, 2 and 3?

Mary: Monkey Island Madness (re-release of 1 & 2 with enhancements on 1 cd) works beautifully on XP... for me anyway. Curse of Monkey Island (part 3) loaded and ran fine... for awhile. Once you talk to the little boy beside the cannon (beginning of the game) and go into the next room, you can play a little, but it would crash there. I have experienced this on 2 different machines. I do not know if this is a bug in the game, but both operating systems used were Windows XP.

Fanatic, I have the original games, not Monkey Island Madness. I'm getting kind of bummed seeing how many of those "good old games" (or not so old) will not work on XP.

Hi Guys: I just finished Obsidian on my XP and it run perfectly without a hitch. No tweaking necessary on that one for me. (I've added it to the list.) I'll guess I'll work on Jekyll & Hyde to see if it plays through for me. Inferno

I played Byzantine with XP in compatibility modr Win 95. I have an Alienware PC and it is quite fast. I think I also had to the graphics acceleration and maybe even the sound. I don't recall any real glitches. Has anyone had any success running "Shivers 2"? Katie

For my good friend Inferno: Thanks to your quiet voice and all those encouraging smiley faces I took the plunge and gave the tweaking a try! And it worked like a charm. I didn't even break out in a sweat doing it either. The only thing different for me is that after I was done it did not ask me to install it again, I guess my PC had given up by then. I decided to not tranfer over any of my saves, it's been long enough since I last played the game that I am just starting over new. So I'm to where I did get the phone call and it worked fine for me. When you get to the desk and are at a close up of the phone do you not get the hand cursor? What exactly is not working for you? Thanks so much for all of the help you gave me Inferno!!! Sequoia

Hi Sequioa: The hand cursor becomes the magnifying glass when the phone is ringing. Left click changes it to a close up of the telephone. When I pass the cursor over the reciever it then changes to a pair of lips. When I left click on the reciver with that cursor the ringing stops as I think its supposed to but....the cursor then changes into an hour glass. and the game freezes for me at this point. Syd was nice enough to send me a save for a workaround. I'm hoping it will work. Are you using MOslo or Turbo along with the game? I'm wondering at this point as to whether I should try increasing my Virtual Memory. Inferno

***************Later**************** Well, the saved game didn't work at all...... However I dcided to uninstall the program, restart my system. This time I increased my Virtual Memory, installed the progrm on my DVD drive (I think it runs a little slower than my CDROM) et viola! I have Byzantine up and running on my Win XP. Let's see if I can run it to the end...if I do then I'll add it to the "Finished List" Inferno

Just an Xp Update, for all y'all! I just finished playing Byzantine through without one crash. I'm begining to wonder just what the real reason is behind some of the larger companies who say certain games are not compatible with Xp, Could it be that they just don't want to take the time to test it properly for us??? .....or in my case take some wacky chances and "wing" it. ....Anywho I say: " Xp'ers unite! No guts no Glory! Goonies never say die! (*** what the heck did I just say? Where did that come from??? oh well***) I'll be quiet now inferno

The instructions say:
1. Insert CD#1 into your CD-ROM drive.
2. Type D:INSTALL [ENTER] (where D: is the drive letter of your CD-ROM).
3. Type in the hard drive letter and directory where you wish to install, then press [ENTER].
4. Click the INSTALL button. Installation begins.
5. If the install was successful, press the OK button, then select SOUNDCARD SETUP from the menu.
6. Choose your sound card from the list on the left of the screen. (If you don't know your sound card, press AUTODETECT CARD. Note that this may not always work.
7. Select your PORT ADDRESS, IRQ and DMA settings from those on the top right of the screen. (If you don't know your sound card settings, press AUTODETECT SETTINGS. Note that this may not always work.
8. To verify the card and settings selection, press TEST CURRENT SETUP. You should hear a sample played. (If the computer locks up at this point or you hear nothing, then the settings may be incorrect. Reboot your computer, change to the directory where you installed "The Dame Was Loaded," and type SETUP [ENTER].
+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+
Anyway, if she just got a black screen while she was trying to run the install, it sounds like a VESA problem. If she got all the way up to #5, but couldn't get the sound card to test properly, something like VDMSound might help.

Howdy y'all: I agree with Jenny100. But I'm going to add. Blank screens also can mean memory problems. Might want to increase memory first. What are her specs? I have this game as well ...but haven't had the time to even take it out of the shopping bag! LOL. I'll put it on my list on things to do. Mr Bill, send me an email tonight about it. I think I have a "set-up" at home for it. Inferno

Well, I was wrong! I can't even get the demo to install! None of my tricks worked. I think it needs pure Dos in order to run. That ain't happening on Xp. It won't even install. Ha! the patch installs in "Xp fake dos" though. Go figure. Change this title to: This Dame Ain't Loading, anytime for me soon. (sigh) Inferno *oh, Braveheart! I need a hug!*

You deserve lots of hugs, Inferno. Thank you for all your valiant attempts and mostly successes. Eventually solutions will be found for most of the difficult ones to run on XP. Lots of HUGS, Mr. Bill

True ,yes. But I have a Vesa driver, still no go. There's some kind of conflict with the install program itself, I think. Any other ideas? Inferno
Will not install in emulated dos, nor any of the compatibility modes ...as of yet. Inferno

I've found that I can play "The 7th Guest" on Windows XP, but how do I install the game? The old way was to type "install" after "D:\" and press ENTER, but obviously that doesn't work for XP. Help, please.
