On my system restore I had checked to protect C and D. Tonight I noticed that protection for D had been turned off. I do not know when or why this happened. How do I turn the protection for D on again? I have Windows 10.

Well, I do not understand what is going on, but the protection is turned on for drive D now. Ghost in the machine!!

kazzmo,

I don't remember what OS you are using so will just give an example with WinXP.

There is access to the system by several routes but the most certain is on Control Panel. Click on the System icon and then the System Restore panel. You should see all of the hard drives on the system.
Highlight a drive other than the system drive and you can select whether System Restore is ON or OFF. The system drive must be ON unless Restore is turned off for all drives.

Robert

Robert, I have Windows 10. Protection had been on for drive D, then went off. Now it is back on. It never turns off protection for drive C, just D. The protection is back on for drive D. I am wondering if it has something to do with the amount of disc space you give to System Restore? I increased the amount last night, might be why the protection turned on for D again.

While enabling System Protection for a non O/S partition probably won't hurt, it also won't be of any value. Its basic function is to take images of critical OS files and registry settings so they can be restored to a prior state. This is typically done prior to applying system updates, but can also be manually created.

It does not backup your data files.

Good point, InlandAZ. System Restore does not back up data files. If you want to do that, File History is an option.

InlandAZ and Draclvr, Thank you. I had no clue. I will quit fussing about it then.
