The Five is a British crime drama which ran for 10 episodes. Supposed to be followed by "The Four" but that hasn't happened yet.

1995: four friends (3 boys and 1 girl) Mark, Danny, Slade and Pru go for a walk in the woods. They leave Mark's five year old brother Jesse who wants to go with them, behind. Jesse vanishes. Serial killer Jakob Marosi who is prison for murdering four other children confessed to having killed Jesse but Jesse's body was never found.

Twenty years later Danny is a police detective investigating the murder of a woman, a prostitute. DNA found at the scene matches the missing Jesse.

Mark is now a lawyer, and looks for missing people in his spare time and is having an affair with married Laura Marshall

Slade runs a shelter

Pru is a doctor and has returned to the UK after having spent 14 years in the USA. She's actually been home for 2 years but didn't tell the guys who are still friends. She's marreid to an American with my real first name Stuart.

Jesse is of course missing presumed deceased but now his DNA has turned up at a murder scene. Is he the murderer? A witness? Another victim? Why hasn't he contacted his parents or his brother in 20 years?

Mark and Jesse's parents have split over the mother refusing to accept Kesse's death and the father wanting to put the past behind them.

Lots of questions: If Jesse was alive to leave blood at the murder scene why did a serial killer confess to murdering him 20 years ago? Did Mark do something to his brother that would result in Jesse running away and avoiding his family for 20 years? Did one or more of the other two boys do something to Jesse? Or was it the girl Pru? Or all 4 of them? Or could Jesse's father have something to hide? Or, if Jesse actually died 20 years ago how did his blood get in the hotel room a woman was murdered in 20 years later?

Slade is played Lee Ingleby by who was Detective Sergeant John Bacchus in Inspector George Gently.
Mark's lover Laura Marshall is played by Honeysuckle Weeks who was Samantha Stewart in Foyle's War.
O-T Fagbenle who plays Danny must look like somebody else because he seems familiar though looking up his credits I haven't seen anything else he was in accept for 2 Doctor Who episodes. Danny's father who suffers from Alzhameirs is the police commissioner in Death In Paradise. Mark and Jesse's father is played by Michael Maloney who was Tom Read in River and Dr. Crowley in Paranoid. He also does video game voices including Avallac'h in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

There are also sub plots which may or may not tie in to the disappearance of Jesse in 1995 and the murder 20 years later. Like a woman shows up at Slade's shelter who's been missing for 5 years. Episode 1 has a shocker of an ending:

Slade murders a man using a pistol with a silencer. In episode 2 he puts the silencer in his pocket but tosses the gun into a lake. So Slade the who runs a shelter for street people is also a hitman?

Sounds interesting, Guybrush. I'll have to see if it's on any of my services.

Episode 6 clears up the side plots and reveals to the audience who committed the murders but we still don't know how Jesse's DNA is showing up.

Through flash backs and present comments from Danny's father who is not as far gone as he pretends, we learn he actually suspected his own son of murdering Jesse 20 years ago which is why he disappeared the files. The first murder Danny is investigating was commited because she tried to get out of a blackmailing scheme and the men evolved wouldn't let her. The man Slade shot, which Danny doesn't know about, was involved. When Mark tells Slade that his brother's DNA was found at the scene of the second murder Danny is investigating and that he thinks Jesse must have killed the victim, Slade says that's impossible, because he did it.

I admit it, I was surprised by where Jesse had been all this time. Of course they didn't really give any clues that would point to who was actually Jess until they revealed it.

Episode 7-10
Click to reveal..
Somebody breaks into Mark's parents home and stealls photos of Jesse. A comic book Jessie was carrying when he vanished turns up. But it turns out to be a reprint from 10 years after he vanished. Slade is arrested (not by Danny) for murder but Mark lies about him being with him at the time of the murder.

Tapes of the serial killer stalking and murdering his victims are found, by Mark and Slade. Because they found them as as a result of breaking and entering, Danny can't use them. So the tapes show up "anonymously" at the police station. Each child victim had 3 tapes. Jesse's 2nd and 3rd tapes are black indicating he wasn't killed. The serial killer finally admits he did not kill Jessie, though he wanted to, because his father showed up.

Danny goes to talk to Mark and Jesse's father but he's not cooperating and insists he will not go to the station unless he is arrested. So having no other choice Danny arrests him for Jesse's murder. At the station his DNA is taken and under questioning he again denies killing his son and ask Danny what motive could he possibly have.

The DNA results show Mark's father is not Jesse's father. Why Danny doesn't consider this a motive I don't know but instead of further questioning Mark's father he releases him and goes to question Marks mother instead. She admits to an affair.

Mark and Slade find Jesse's biological father who is dying. In a flash back Jesse's biological father tells what happened with him and Jesse that day all those years ago. When he saw Jesse which he figured was his son despite Jesse's mother denials, being annoyed by a stranger he claims he's Jesse's father and the serial killer backs down. Jesse knows the man so he goes with him. He apparently tells Jesse who he is and Jesse willingly according to him leaves town with him. Flashforward to Jesse as teenager and a student. He's now going by the name Karl Hatchett. He will become Detect Constable Karl Hatchett working at Detective Sargent Danny Kenwood;s station!

In a flashback to Danny's first learning about Jesse's DNA at the crime scene, DC Karl Hatchett hears Danny talk about it, gets into the computer to discover its his DNA. DC Karl Hatchett who is actually a tech was not supposed to be at the crime scene but he talked a CSI into letting him take a look and he dropped a bandage with his blood on it at the first murder scene.

Pru and Ally (lady cop) have figured out on their own that DC Karl is Jesse and are trying to reach Karl, Danny or Mark and can't get a hold of any of them.

Danny is at home wrestling with his consciousness over what to do about his father, who nearly burnt his home down. His wife wants her father in law out of their home and until now Danny has not wanted to put him in an institution. He doesn't answer his phone when Slade tries to call him with the discovery that Jesse is one of his subordinates.

Skade leaved Mark to go find out why Danny is not answering his phone.

Ally discovers the CSI who let Karl/Jesse inot the crime scene which he accidentally contaminated, purposely containimated the second murder scene.

Pru tries to get Karl to go have a drink with her so she can tell him she knows but he decines so she just calls him Jesse. He panics and drives away. She calls Slade who is stuck in traffic. He abandonds his car, runs to where Pru is, Seeing Slade and being stuck in traffic himself, Jesse leaves his car. Slade gives chase but losses him.

Mark finally reaches Danny. Jesse's biological father dying in the hospital worries that Karl wont come vist him like he does everyday. Paul ties to justify his actions to Mark and Danny claming Jesse had a good life, Mark's reply "too bad the rest of us didn't". Since he only has weeks to live, Danny doesn't bother to arrest him for kidnapping.

Finding his library card in his car, all the friends, Danny, Mark, Slade and Pru head to the library, where Jesse's mother works. She looks up Karl's record and discovers he's checked out "Gulliver's Travels", Jesse's favorite book. Mark says he has an idea where he might be.

In a flashback scene we see that the man Mark thought was following him was actually Karl/Jesse looking at the photo album he had stole from his parent's home. In the present, Jesse is in the same woods with "Gullivers Travels". In another flash back we see how he managed to elude Mark when Mark chased into a empty building, by simple acting as if he was there as a police officer looking for the mysterious man.

With Slade watching. Mark approaches Jesse who is beginning to rember bits of his childhood as Jesse not Karl. As he and Mark talk, Danny and Pru arrive but Slade holds them back. After having initially calling him Jesse, Mark switches to Karl because he sees his brother is confused. Jesse eventually accepts who he is and takes his brother's had. Eventually the parents arrive. Family hug.

At home mother tries to tell her husband about the affair but she doeskin even get a word out before he says "it doesn't matter". So he's apparently known Jesse was not his biological son but he's loved him as his own all these years.

The series ends where it began, five people walking away, two brothers turn back to wave to their parents before the five walk off. The scene flashes back and forth between the present and 20 years ago. Ending in the past just before the credits role.

Frankly it had a happier ending than I thought it would.
