Apparently, it's neither violin nor steel guitar. Stephen Stills is listed as "lead guitar" on the album so, probably volume pedal?

OK - thanks for all that - v. interesting. Looks like it's done either by using the volume control to create swell or by actually bowing the strings. Would imagine that's difficult with the relatively flat fingerboard most guitars have
