Are you waiting for a sale Ana? I am not a club member but it will let me buy it today. I notice I can do that when they have that particular CE sale with the featured game of the day.

Thanks oldbroad. I was not aware, but I will wait for a sale. Twenty dollars is a bit steep.

Great Monkey Island joke in this game.

The HOPs are blah due to both the objects themselves and the graphic style, and the overall graphic style is bland.

I haven't given up on Revenant's Hunt though because the characters are a hair more interesting than usual. Who can resist a town nosy parker who gets her hand stuck in one of those complex locks, the kind I think all of us have laughed over when considering who exactly would install them in real life, that secures the door of the local pelt shop? And how many tiny towns have pelt shops? All of that is intriguing conceptually.

Okay, I will. I'm on a type of puzzle that usually confounds me with beads that slide onto horizontal, vertical, and diagonal tracks. I refused to throw in the towel, so I exited it and continued a replay of Nutcracker, skipping the tough puzzles that I have figured out before so that I could get to the flag challenge. Darn, I solved it again by accident and still have no idea of the strategy.

Back to Revenant's Hunt, I like that this game is not as gross as the beautifully crafted disgusting one set in Alister's, I think it's Alister's, mock-up of a hospital. That's the one with the pregnant mannequins. To be clear, that was a good game with extraordinary artwork; it was the content of the artwork that repulsed me, not its quality.

I don't like the graphics in Revenant's Hunt because they are dull. The muted colors are not the heart of the issue; the problem lies in the poor creative choices for the environments which look slap-dash and washed out instead of precisely detailed. There was largely unrealized visual potential in the setting from the mini Rodeo Drive that includes a furrier in the ritzy part of town to the pawn shop and the double-decker, duplex trailer on the wrong side of the tracks.

Stylistic lacunae aside, the game is still way smarter than I am, and I had to read puzzle directions. So far, this is a cut above the usual HOPA fare and neither the best nor the worst MCF. I remain hooked.

Hi, Guybrush!

GMTA because those are the 2 games I also picked up in the sale. Since I had 2 Game Club Credits, my total came to $0.00 happydance ! I couldn't decide between Redemption Cemetery and Harrowed Halls, but the SE of Harrowed Halls was released while I was trying to make up my mind, so that settled that lol !

First, the good part:

The storyline is solid, more or less, and as I have been forever harping on the importance of a coherent story, they deserve high marks for that. The puzzles, especially the HOPs had enough originality to keep me anticipating the next one.

8dog didn't like the graphics, and I see his point, but it's their right to make an artistic choice, and perhaps the intention was to not overwhelm the player with extraneous junk. (I'm making this up, you know; just to be argumentative.) I do think the artwork was consistent throughout, and the effect was a hazy, mysterious environment. I suspect it was done to keep you slightly creeped-out the whole time. I didn't mind that; it worked.

But the bad:

The game was too short - distressingly so. I didn't hurry at all, yet the main game took just over four hours, and the bonus game mere minutes! When I think back to spending twenty bucks for a "real" adventure that I could play for a while every day and it lasted several weeks, I question the economics here. We all understand these things cost a lot of money to produce, but cutting back this far is liable to cause many players to think twice about buying next year's MCF.

More on the puzzles - I was delighted to see some "major" puzzles; but they turned out to be a disappointment. I would expect them to take some time, and some mental work, but they were so watered-down compared with the ones from Fate's Carnival for example, that I was left with a "huh? is that all?" feeling. Contradicting myself from above? Not really. The ordinary "single" puzzles were just fine. It's that the Big ones turned out to not be big enough. No doubt some people whined about the size and complexity of the ones I mentioned, but I am reminded of a roomful where half the old ladies say they're freezing, and the other half say it's like a bake-oven in here. You can never please everybody. But I digress . . .

Oh - and they really did lock up the fire extinguisher! shame Puhleeze.

Bottom line? I did enjoy it, really. Just wanted more.

Thank you for that well-balanced review, Tally Ho. Much appreciated. thumbsup

I haven't played the game yet, but I would disagree with you on one point, which is about the price of these games.

I see people complaining about the price of Collector's Editions (sometimes, but not always, relative to the length of the game), and it makes me shake my head. The reason for this is the fact that if the player is willing to wait a couple of weeks, or in some instances merely a few days, there is invariably a sale where a CE can be picked up for $6.99 - $8.99 - and this often applies whether the player is a club member or not. Looking at it that way, and providing the player doesn't have to purchase the game the minute it is released, the price not only looks much better but in fact becomes a bargain, even for a game that is described as being on the shorter side.

Sorry to hear about the fire extinguisher. I can only hope there isn't a broken zipper pull. laugh

Back in 2009 before I ever heard of Big Fish and downloads I posted this regarding the second Ravenhearst game:

"Looks like I'm getting ripped off. I am currently waiting for delivery of this game (scheduled to come today) but I paid $19.99!! I hope it is as good as you all say. I did play Ravenhears and liked it but probably would not have bought this for that price if I hadn't read how much "adventure" is in it."

Ana responded:

"Not sure why you think you are getting ripped off. The 6.99 is for Club Members on BigFish. You can join if you like just like amyone else.

The game is not an adventure game, it is a Interactive HOG game like many other HOG's except this one is of extremely high quality. There are always free demos available Such as this one to see if you like it before you buy also. The game is awesome in my opinion."

I never forgot this post. I wasn't new to Gameboomers then but I was pretty new to posting.

I checked out the club and joined once when I purchased something but then cancelled within the 30 days they give you. I always wait for a sale.

And Marian is spot on regarding waiting for a sale. Good to read reviews too to see how long it is. It pays to wait!

I found Carnival of Fate with its seemingly never ending hidden object puzzles and those annoying multiple stage puzzles to be over bearing. Too many puzzles not enough plot. I liked this one better. But I don't recall a Monkey Island joke.

I'm currently casual game free. Waiting for a standard version of something to use free code on.

The "Monkey Island" joke is:

Click to reveal..
A grappling chicken in "Revenant's Hun"t instead of a zip line pulley chicken.

I just got back to this game and starting with the prom exhibit I am disappointed. I agree with TallyHo that the multi=step puzzles are not worth the price of admission.
