I may get a new cell phone for Christmas this year. Since I have never had one I would like to know, is it better to transfer and keep your same landline number or get a different number?

THat depends Geo. I keep my cell phone spam free and give my land line # to companies that tend to spam you. My "house phone aka land line" is a cheap flip phone. Cheaper than keeping an actual land line service.
