The player reviews on Big Fish for the Collector's Edition of this game are extraordinarily high - the game has been given an almost-perfect overall score of 5 stars from a total of 50 customer reviews. This is not to say that everyone is going to like the game, but most games don't end up with this high of an overall rating, so it's worth noting.

I played the Demo and thought it was darned good. My only "but..." was that there is quite an uneven range of difficulty among the mini-games and tasks. This might be troublesome to a few people. Still, it was fun to play and I marked the game as one to buy when there is another sale.

Thank you, Marian. I'm sure I will grin

I'm not actually supposed to be buying any more games until after Christmas and yet somehow I found myself back at Big Fish purchasing "Dark City : London" in their sale AND then at GOG purchasing "The Remains of Edith Finch" in their sale !!!!

I am SO ashamed of myself .... NOT .... evil

Thanks, Mad. I played the Demo and found it fun to play but haven't bought it yet. The uneven difficulty of the mini-games may stump some people. This is an issue with many of these games, though. I am playing Dreampath: Guardian of the Forest, for example. I find most of the so-called puzzles to be ludicrously simple and then, suddenly, there is a rotation puzzle or slider that defies half an hour of tries to get it. I even Skipped one, finally. That is something I never do. Had to go back and reset the game difficulty to Easy in order to Skip it, then go back in and return it to Hard again. Humph!

Those rotation and slider puzzles are often the death of me, Reenie. I make a resolution that I am not going to skip any puzzles and am feeling good about my playthrough, sailing along, and then I come up against one of those!

I used to spend about 6 hours replaying sliders to find the least amount of moves to write the walkthroughs for the CE's for BigFish. We were not given puzzle solutions and have to include the solutions for all puzzles that are not random. A half hour is nothing! Isn't that the point of playing the game? The puzzles are the best part!

I agree, in principle. I do play the games for the puzzles, primarily. Let's face it, the story lines are not usually the draw. ha ha The one I skipped was not one that I gave up on quickly. But then, maybe I was feeling peevish right at that moment.

Just as a matter of interest, Reenie ....

if you play more for the puzzles, do you play Adventures at all ??

There are plenty of those with much more challenging puzzles AND more engaging storylines smile12

Oh, yes! I started playing Adventure Games with the original Myst and the Kings Quest series and made my way through all the major game series for two decades at least. You name it, I probably played it. laugh I still play one or two a year, as long as they aren't DRM types or anything that requires on-line play. The Next Big Thing is the last one I played. Unfortunately, good Adventure Games are not as plentiful on the ground these days, so I have taken to replaying older games, like the Gabriel Knight stuff, Zork series, etc. And I replay Safecracker at least once a year, as it is totally puzzles, like 7th Guest and 11th Hour. No "story line" at all, just puzzles.

I've noticed that too. I get up to two tiles out of place and then I'm stuck.
I often end up calling my brother to do them.
He gets out pen and paper and makes diagrams of series of moves that end up by swapping positions. Sometimes we find a solution on the Internet that shows how to swap two similarly oriented tiles.

It's even worse when they make the pieces dark or indistinct and you have trouble telling them apart.

While most of the puzzles in the game are so stupidly easy I'd hesitate to call them puzzles.

You mean the 2006 Safecracker from Kheops?
If you manage to play the 1997 Safecracker I'm curious how you fix the speed problem with the inventory list.

The 1997 Safecracker was developed by Daydream Software, the same company that made Traitors Gate. The inventory was a long list of items that scrolled up and down at a rate that varied with your processor speed. On computers from 1997 it worked OK, but on computers from year 2000 it scrolled immediately from the beginning to the end of the list, skipping over every item in between. So the game was unplayable because you couldn't access your inventory. Someone made an unofficial "patch" that would slow the inventory if you right-clicked, but computers kept getting faster and eventually the "patch" didn't do enough to slow the inventory scrolling speed.

I thought the 2006 Safecracker (developed by Kheops) had better puzzles, though the 1997 Safecracker had more safes. They are completely different games, though both are puzzle-oriented and involve opening safes. The 1997 Safecracker had way more inventory.

One disadvantage of the 1997 version is that the entire game is timed. Though some people claimed you had plenty of time, that was really only a certainty if you used a walkthrough.

The earliest version of 1997 Safecracker was published by PXL Computers or Click Boom (not sure which) before being republished by Dreamcatcher (The Adventure Company) and Dreamcatcher-published editions are much more common than the earlier one. As far as I know, the 2006 Safecracker was only ever published by Dreamcatcher in North America.
