all of a sudden this morning my screen went black and I restarted my computer. When it restarted, all my icons on my desktop were huge. I changed my screen resolution as it was now 600 x800 or something like that. the desktop looks better now and I can get on my sites. However, when I try and play my solitaire game now (which worked fine last night) it says hardware acceleration disabled or not supported. game is running in software rendering mode. What do I need to do to get my hardware acceleration back on?

Also, when I tried to play Night of the Rabbit, I could get into the game, but it was choppy. so I went to dxdiag and found this. Is my video card driver not working?

Strange that there is nothing at all listed about your video card.

It looks like you have no video card drivers.

I looked up the Device Identifier, which is the only thing your dxdiag listed about your card and found this thread from 2014

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic...install-fixed-/

I know it's an old thread, but maybe the advice about reinstalling the drivers in Safe Mode would still be valid.

Do you have Windows 10? If you do, Windows 10 might have installed new drivers that weren't compatible with your video card.

You could also try reverting to previous Nvidia drivers, described here
https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/how-to-rollback-nvidia-drivers-in-windows-10/

Is this a laptop?

I am running windows 7. It is not a laptop. It was working great last night, except I noticed some choppiness with one of my games. also, I noticed that I couldn't play some of the videos of my grandson that were sent to me - it was just a picture and the video wouldn't play. Do I need to buy a new video card - and if so, which one is good? Thanks for your help.

I would definitely try reinstalling your video card drivers in Safe Mode as Jenny suggests. But since this happened quite suddenly, it sound to me like your video card has failed.

Do you know what video card is in this desktop? Or is it integrated video in your processor such as a Core i3 or Core i5? If you need to replace it, there are a bunch of factors that need to be considered including the wattage of your power supply.

It's possible the video card went bad.
But before buying a new one, I'd want to make sure it's not an issue with the drivers becoming corrupt.

Also before buying a new video card I'd want to try reseating the old card (pull it out and push it back in). I did have one work itself loose, though that was years ago and I'm not sure if it's still a concern on newer computers.

As for choosing a new video card, what type of games do you play?
What was your current video card (was it Geforce GTX 770 ?) and was it sufficient for your use before it went bad? or would you want a faster card?

Drac probably knows more about this computer than I do - she has helped me so much. I think I just want to buy a new video card. i don't know which one though and I would have to order it. I just play adventure games. My current video card was a Geforce gtx 650. What would be similar to work in my windows 7?

I wish I could remember more about this computer! Do you know what the wattage of your power supply is?

Well, it should be good enough to support a Geforce GTX 650 if that's what was working before.

I found this thread about upgrading a GTX 650 to a 1050 and they say the 1050 actually consumes less power.

Thanks, Jenny! I was going to go looking for that Tom's Hardware article which I remember reading.

This link is to the the 1050 video cards at Amazon.

Amazon

And the 1050's at Newegg.

Just to make sure that I don't screw up, if I ordered this from Amazon, will it work for my windows 7 64 bit computer? https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Supp...ywords=gtx+1050

Whether it will work or not is based on your motherboard, not your operating system. It needs a PCI-E interface and I am going to assume that is the same interface as your GTX 650.

If you could give us the brand and model of your computer, we can look up your motherboard specs.

It's cheaper, but it's also a pretty low end card. It's a GT and the low end 1030, not the 1050. It's barely better than your old one. But if your budget needs to stay cheaper, it'll do.

It took a little digging, but that did help. It says you have a PCI-E x16 controller and the connection you need. I figured it did, but I always hate to assume anything.

Drac, please please please tell me what card to buy. I have been looking all day and it is all Greek to me. I don't want one much better than the one that I have, as I think my computer game buying days are over, I just want to play the ones that I have. Please advise me.

Well, then we are down to your budget, mbday! I know about your issues, so I totally understand. Let me know what you can afford and I'll help you decide.

Check this page out at Amazon... any of these cards will do and even that GT 1030 is cheaper than at Best Buy. Scroll down to where there are 5 or 6 six cards in comparison.

"Low profile" means it's made to fit in those computers with tiny cases instead of regular size desktop cases.

You should be able to use a low profile card in a normal computer case as long as it has the right bracket. Here's a thread where someone asked whether it would fit.

The card at Amazon that you linked to seems to have pictures of two different brackets.

Passive means no fan. The cards are often clocked lower (slower card) than the versions with a fan. Passive cards also mean you have to be extra careful that your computer case has adequate ventilation. Unless you have plenty of fans in your case, or intend to install a couple, I wouldn't get the passive. There's a reason most video cards come with fans.

I notice that model also has the option for "single slot" which has the normal form factor as well as a fan.
Unless you have a tiny case and need the low profile version, I'd recommend the "single slot" model.

I agree with Jenny after looking at the options.

thank you so very much Drac and Jenny. I just ordered the one that Jenny posted. I get so confused looking at all the options (just like trying to buy wallpaper or paint - too many options). Hopefully hubby can put it in okay. Again, my most heartfelt thanks.

Hubby and I are having a hard time. I finally got the new video card and we tried to install it today and the plug doesn't fit. Plus my old one had a fan on the bottom of it and this one doesn't have that. did I get the wrong card? what can I do to get the plug to fit? please help.
