When growing up there were 3 Johnnys in the household, My father, grandfather, and me. When someone called Johnny all 3 of us would come running. So my mom and grandmother started calling my grandfather John, My daddy Johnny and also Junior, and I was called Johnny Boy. All my friends to date still call me Johnny Boy and I am 53 years old. JohnBoy was taken for my email address and username so the 298 was added automatically by cox. So now I use johnboy 298 for everything.

when i was in college, my boyfriend had his wisdom teeth out. later that night he wrote me a poem in email. he was on pain medication. he ended the email with a little poem: You are my love, My dove, My... fov? and the name stuck. -emily ps becky, i tend not to use capital letters much on the internet. just laziness, i think... but as a result, Fov (with a capital F) looks really weird to me!

OK here it is. You know I did mention something about my name choice being related to a school I went to. Sigh -I suppose the truth must be told, it'll come out eventually anyway. While in law school, I was out partying and fell into a swamp. While there - trying to get out - I got to know a truly oppressed group. Gators - After hanging out with them for a time - I decided to specialize in a little known area of law known as reptiles for reptiles. Hence - I am the sole lawyer specializing in "gatorlaw". You have no idea what these guys have been put through til we started up the class action suits and federal uncivil rights cases.

Mine is simple enough, it was the nickname I called by now deceased appaloosa horse, Winterhawk. I called him Hawka, or Hawka von, or Hawka von Puka, sometimes Hawkavonpukabrain. Puka means hole in Hawaiian and had a tendency to act up sometimes. He spent the last 10 of his years living in pasture and this name rang real loud when I called him. He died a year and a half ago and I miss him dearly, he was "my" horse for 14 years.

JohnBoy, well I always imagine you as the Oldest of the Waltons, intelligent, sensitive, But with a drive to be More than everyone expects from you.. OK, so maybe in the UK 'boy' as part of a name is no big deal as it is in the US. Johnboy to us is Richard Thomas, who has done soo much since his springboard in the Waltons!!! OK as to me.. I have done this so many times, everyone else called me Tigger (the bouncy one) it has become a part of me.. it brings out the part I most Wish to be.. "but the most wonderful thing about Tiggers is Im the only one"!!!! I'm sure the original Tigger will be spinning in his toybox!! I Bounce cause if I didn't, I would crawl into a hole and never come out. Tig Gelert, have you read the Barbara Erskine novels about Wales?? Hawk, I Hope you have found another horse to love, there are loads out there who need you.

Wow what a lot of great stories! Derman, that reminds me of the Shermanator from American Pie. fov - that story is one of the best I've heard, I had my wisdom teeth taken out and I remember the fog I was in. Hawka - I like your explanation, I never would have figured out where the "spaces" in your name were. Mine is a lot less personal then most of these stories, it really shows what a geek I am. A while back when I was first using the Internet, I needed to come up with a username for eBay. I wanted Lone Wolf, because multiplayer gaming was getting popular but I preferred gaming alone, adventures, or even when playing shooters. Well guess what? 31 other people had already wanted Lone Wolf, so eBay "suggested" lonewolf32. From that day on I used lonewolf32 every site I went to, just so I didn't have to keep track of a bunch of different usernames for different web sites. Usually I was successful getting lonewolf32 - except those cases where a site required certain characters or a certain length of username. Because of those I still have to maintain a database of my usernames and passwords for all the sites I go to.

I picked Housewife, for one simple reason, is what I am at the time...Filling out forms and asking what my occupation is I would put "housewife" instead of Homemaker. Many years ago being a homemaker or a housewife wasn't a job, but we know better now. Because being a housewife is a hard job and raising a family. You can't call in sick or take a vacation and pay isn't that great either...

A few years ago, a friend of mine had a personal disaster that was gonna cost a chunk of money. I had just received a huge retroactive pay check, and offered to help out. She started calling me her Fairygodmother, for coming in with help, just in the nick of time. Soon my other friends were calling me that, to tease me, whenever I did something nice. When I first took the name as a signon, you could only have 12 characters, so I left out the O's.

I picked mine, because I'm into fantasy and adventure and the deep down belief that I was a wizard or an alchemist in a previous life Actually I had a very difficult time coming up with a screen name. <img border="0" alt=" " title="" src="graemlins/cry.gif" /> The one I chose is not the one I always use. This one was picked just for GBer's. I happen to be watching the Eiger Sanction on the boob tube a while back and Clint Eastwood's character was code named Hemlock. The name kind of fit right in with theme I was in at the time, because I had just finished playing the omega stone and chemicus when I joined this illustrious group of BAAGers.

My favorite aunt, who sadly died last year, gave me this name when I was a little girl (many years ago). She had this thing about giving everybody some silly name - my sister Sue was Soupy, my brother Ray was Rangy, her other nieces were Cookie and Sweet . When I had to register a user name when I got a computer, I felt that this was the time for my silly name. She got the biggest kick out of it when I told her that I had registered as fildil. Fil By the way Nolalou, this aunt was from New Orleans and though I've never been there, she always talked about it so much that I always felt like it was almost a second home.

Mine's just k for my first name (Kim) and wbridge is part of my last name (well, my maiden name). When I first got an email account it's what I came up with (I might have needed 8 characters - I don't really remember) and I've been using it as my username ever since. My email has, however, since changed.
Not really a very interesting story ... :-)

I feel so bad for you all, on my name.
When I first established an online presence, I wanted a name that I could remember, and that wasn't anything in particular. I wanted a name that was not evocative of, well, anything. So, I picked some letters from my first and last name. So far, so good, but what the heck was I thinking - there are no vowels in my online name! What a nightmare for people to spell! I see people struggling to get it right, on every board I contribute to. If I could go back in time and change it, I would do so. Unfortunately, it's too late now, my online presence is established, so I'm keeping it.
Incidentally, please don't worry about getting it right, when you reply to me.

I came up with Flutist because I play flute. I teach flute and play flute in a community orchestra. I also teach and play guitar but I concentrate on flute, hence, "flutist" Flutist

Shorah (btw that means "peace/greetings" in D'ni, the Myst universe language) Salar is a character from Myst the Book of Atrus. She's nobody famous. Just a friendly villager from the 37th Age who seems to do a lot of laundry. When I first came online one of my very first actions was to google for Cyan & subsequently join Rivenguild. On Riven Lyst I learned about the Myst books for the first time, and I was reading them the same week as trying to pick a screen name for myself. I related strongly to the character of Salar, so I gave that name a whirl. Turned out I was the only one in the Myst community who had ever adopted that name. I found it was uncommon elsewhere so it seemed handy just to keep using it. I added "of Myst" on this forum to indicate the name's origin & give my favourite game in the world a further remembrance. Seems silly now, because everybody here knows Myst, but I have no clue how to shorten it. So there ya are. By now "Salar" is so familiar, I will answer to it just like my birth name. *grins, shrugs & hangs up a few shirts to dry* Susan/Salar

I worked at Charles Schwab brokerage for six years and would use his last name attached to my age at the time I joined the forum (35).
Not very interesting, especially since I no longer work there.

When I graduated from nursing school, my first job was working the midnight shift on an oncology unit. "Ha! Ha!," I said, "I will pay my dues on the night shift for a couple of years, and then I'll have a day job just like normal humans!" Okay, that was a LOT of years ago. I paid my dues, changed specialty (Labor & Delivery), and now, at long last...I'm still working midnights. (sigh) When I joined Gameboomers, I had finally come to the realization that I will ALWAYS be a "Daysleeper". At least my dysfunctional sleep pattern brought me a cool screen name! Daysleeper P.S. For those who like R.E.M., "Daysleeper" is also a pretty neat song.

Hi Becky Thats not surprising. She jumped out to me but she's only a minor character. Salar appears only in Myst:Book of Atrus beginning around page 200. Here's the Salar summary: Salar scrubs laundry by a lake & Atrus sees her. She follows Atrus around the island watching him get the clothes she washed all dirty Susan M

Not very exciting, although it's not my "real" name...I use it mostly online, but it's a nickname I got in college. It just sort of evolved; as college nicknames tend to do! This is a very fun thread!

Hmmmm... 'ladyyve'..... Why? A lot of reasons! 'LadyWulf' always seemed to be taken already and I'm too lazy to try to remember a number on the end of any name, so wanting to use my own name, but at the same time, being distinctive, I chose 'Lady Y've'. A lot of my friends shortened Yvonne to Y've and call me that anyway.... it stuck. I've always been kind of wild and daring growing up. No, I didn't dance naked on any table tops, but I think that over the years I've matured and am now a Lady.
I love wolves and sea otters... and all things Egyptian! I felt that the most recognizable symbol of Egypt is Cleopatra and NObody portrays her better than Liz Taylor, hence my avatar! I have a 7 yr. old female green iguana that I named 'Cleopatra' also... or 'Cleo' for short. Liz' birthday is the day before mine. I also needed a pen name.
One of my dear friends is named Lady Bobbi, too. <sighhhhhhhh>
...and now for the craziest reason of all........ I think that I 'was' Cleopatra in another lifetime! LOL!

Hi I chose Lone Wolf because I'm divorced without children. I'm an only child myself. My dad had one brother who never married and never had any children and he passed away in 1996. My mother was an only child. Then I lost both of my parents in 1998. So hence the user name Lone Wolf. On the bright side I can hold a family reunion in a phone booth! However I really don't look forward to holidays at all. Christmas is the worst of all holidays.
I do have a girlfriend now and she has a daughter that is 11. We spend allot of time together. And I have allot of good friends that treat me like family.
Lone Wolf

I chose mystmum when I signed up to the Ubisoft forums to solve a technical problem I was having with Exile. I'm a stay at home mum, and love the Myst series and I'm lazy with the caps key, so mystmum worked fine. And now I answer to it all over the net, so why change?

First forum I ever joined was Home of the Underdogs.
I wanted a name that implied talking, canines & female. And if possible, used interesting letters (whatever that means).
Thus....Yapette was born.

This is a great thread - I always wondered where people got their user names. Mine's very simple - it's my name. Well, Barbara is my name, but I use Barb on the internet because it's short & simple. Hi, Johnny, I'm like Tigger - I always think of Richard Thomas when I see "Johnboy"! Syd - I used to think you were a man until I think you mentioned a husband one time. Cheers, Barb

Well let's see, my email username, jgsax, has a much more interesting reasoning. My stepdad who raised me was Pete Green, so I went by Johnny Green most of my life even though I was not adopted so my legal name is Richmond. So when I returned to my home town I became Johnny Green again (except for legal stuff which confuses everyone even me). I am also a professional musician playing saxophone in various bands. Thus jgsax (Johnny Green Saxophone).
However, my username here is just because when I first joined, I was so used to game players being in their teens or early 20's that I figured I would be the oldest on the board. Pleasantly surprised I found a much more mature and enjoyable group here later. Anyway, that's why I chose oldman. Incidently, although not the oldest, I rank amoung them having been brought into this world in 1936.
Probably more than you asked for.

This is fascinating stuff... I need a more interesting username that has a cool anecdote behind it! I wonder if everyone would be interested in posting pictures of themselves. That would be a great thread too! I don't know though, maybe not everyone has the right camera for it or has a scanner.

Josefien is my real name, allthough you write it Joséphine. In the Netherlands I always use the name boombever. But as I got strange reactions on that nick when I used it on American sites, I decided to use my real name. I like trees and the phellodendron is a tree, wich name in Dutch means beavertree. So I liked it the other way: treebeaver and in dutch it is boombever. Tssss what a long story. Thank you all for your patience. josefien

My story is not original at all. Let's just say I've had a love of basketball since I was quite young.

I've had my "user name" for quite a while (much longer than since I've been with GB) My son, Jason gave it to me. September 13,1999 to be exact. A few of you know the story of my name...but for those of you who don't. Here goes: My youngest boy, Jason, had been known to many of his friends while in highschool as "Inferno". Whether it was for the fiery light deep within his beautiful dark eyes or for his "vulcan-like" passion and temperment which he possesed for those things he loved most deeply: family, friends and country. So, this was his nickname in the real and virtual worlds. On September 13,1999 (4 days before I would leave my beloved New York and head for Texas with my Braveheart (sigh!)), my beautiful and loving boy left for the Navy and the start of what was to be the greatest "adventure" of his life. Before he walked out of our home, he bid a heartfelt goodbye to his stepfather and then turned to me. He drew me into his strong arms and hugged me as though he would break me in two. "I love you, Mom. Take care of you." With the tears of a mother's love, I reached up and kissed him on the cheek. "Take care of you" I replied. (A phrase that was something Jason I always said to each other.) As I gazed up into his beautifully seraphim like face, all at once those eyes caught me. How could someone so positively angelic looking have such fire in his eyes? "Jason," I laughed through my tears, "Your nickname "Inferno" surely suits you!" He replied with a wink,"Don't you know where I got that from, Mom? It's from you...my friends have always told me that I have your eyes, not to mention your temper! So while I'm away I want you to take my name "Inferno" and use it...It's yours now." So, when I moved to Texas I started to use the name "Infernoj13usa" - Inferno = for fire in his eyes
- j = for Jason
- 13 = a magical number of protection for him
- usa = to remember his passion for the country that he holds so dear.
...and that's the rest of the story. Inferno

Hi CNW400, Microsoft Train Simulator is fantastic! There are "missions" that you can complete or you can just pick a train and a route and drive where you want. I find it alot of fun. I love trains. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who even has a slight interest in trains. It really is just like driving a real train. Here is a link to the official site: http://www.microsoft.com/games/trainsim/ It can now be found for $19.99 at many stores and online also. Microsoft Train Simulator 2 is in development now and should be released near the end of this year. Rusty

My username derives from the fact that I used to ride Japanese motorcycles. I think hubby suggested it as my "handle" on the CB. It kinda stuck. Kay

Laura, are you feeling ok? You're making these strange noises. Are you hung over from yesterday's party in the Mixed Bag forum? I know you're just trying to bump this up so more people will respond to this thread. Guess I'll add in my 2 cents.... My username is pretty unoriginal, but I use it every place that I need a username. dmtomchick = Dawn Marie Tomchick Pretty boring, I know. But it looks like I'm not the only one here who did it, so I don't feel so bad.

I can't remember enjoying reading a thread so much in a while, but this has been a real pleasure and some are very touching. When I got here I was so anxious to get on I didn't lurk around and read for days and or weeks I found it and when I got here I just signed on there was already a Karen so I used Karen and NJ for New Jersey of course. After I was here for a while I thought some of the names were so neat I was sorry I didn't lurk and then pick a name but it was too late. Thanks again for a great thread Karen

How many here played Discworld Noir?? Enough said!! For those that haven't one of my favorite characters in the gameworld is Lewton, the detective from that crazy world in the far out galaxies (sort of a mixed up jumble of those great detectives of film noir, Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe to name a few).
Happy gaming all, Lewton (yeah I know, this is the correct spelling, LOL)

My story isn't terribly interesting, but I'll tell it again, because there are a bunch of new people since the last time we had a thread about names.
My real name is Janet, and when I was looking for a user name I picked Jenny because I am approximately 1/2 Scot, and Jenny is the Scottish nickname for Janet...

Wow, what a fantastic thread! Thanks for adding your story, catsskeg, and bumping it up, or I might never have seen it. Some of your stories are just great - Laura, yours is hilarious, while Inferno, yours is incredibly touching. Now, I'll add mine to the mix. It's reeeeally boring Gita's my name. I didn't capitalize the "G" because for years I didn't use capital letters in communication. It wasn't so much laziness as it was that I really just dislike capital letters! I'm not sure what changed - perhaps I felt that it was time to leave my "l33t g33k" days behind - but now I'm writing normally again I actually have no idea why/how I happened to sign up with it, 'coz I *never* use it to sign up for stuff. Usually, I use justG, because you'd be amazed by just how many people have trouble remembering how to spell and/or pronounce a 4-letter name. Also, many of my friends just call me G (no, not G Money, or G Thang, or any other such silliness). Oh, and by the way, for fans of Will & Grace.. I was using justG WAY before "Just Jack." So hmph. I forget who suggested it now, but I think a photo thread would be great. I know many of us frequent other forums as well, so the pics may be redundant, but many don't, so they umm... won't.. be.

Well, I've avoided answering this one for awhile now, but here goes anyway: When I first stumbled across this board, I was trying to track down a bug in the demo for Gilbert Goodmate--and sure enough someone had posted on the topic. I felt like replying, but of course I couldn't do so without registering. But at the time I didn't actually think I'd stick around very long--maybe post once or twice and go. So I didn't really think very hard about my screenname... ...so I tried to come up with the silliest, most ostentatious name I could think of. I happened to be reading Ender's Game at the time, and if you've read the book you probably know what significance Locke and Demosthenes have. So there was my name, and then for some reason I can't possibly fathom I managed to stick around a little longer than I'd expected.
