Here's something I just don't know as I've always been a Cat person. Cats dig holes to potty in with their front paws and then cover the hole with their front paws. Always. So yesterday, the cat I call Duplex (not mine but comes to eat) was at the foot of my driveway, on his way home, when he stopped, and with his REAR legs kicked dirt everywhere, just like I've seen dogs do when they get done with their 'business'. It wasn't random as he kept doing it several times. Has anyone ever seen a cat do that move? I was fascinated. Had cats forever, and never saw one scratch dirt with their rear legs. Geez. Is he having an identity crisis?

Sounds funny, Sorta. I don't think I ever saw our cats do that, but ours were all inside cats.

Maybe she's trying to mark her territory like dogs do. I've never seen cats do that although many kick litter out of the box.

Yeah, I'm stumped on this one. This guy is a stray, who I think belongs to someone or did at some time. I first saw him down the block hanging around the driveway with a small poodle at a duplex. Mother and kids were petting the dog and cat so I assumed he belonged to them. Months later, he's still making his way to my house which is the fifth down from Duplex's assumed house.

He's aggressive with his food and I have to lure him to another table to eat, otherwise none of the others can eat because he 'owns' the feeding table. I can pet him gently and then he starts growling. I don't want to push the 'friendly' bit.

Was just so surprised to see him in the dirt where all the daily dog walkers like to let their dogs potty and there he was, on his way home, and stopped to kick dirt backwards with his back feet. He didn't potty, just stopped and kicked the dirt several times. Looked just like the dogs to it. As far as I can tell, he really was making the same 'kick the dirt all over' moves as a dog does. Then off he went, wherever he goes. Wish I could follow him and find if he actually has a home. Could be he belonged to someone at sometime, but they moved or he just wanders.

I'm going to do some internet research on male cats kicking dirt backwards like a dog does and see if anything shows up.

Especially if he's an intact male, that is definitely territory marking behavior. I've seen them do it before this time of the year which is mating time here.

OH! male cats marking for mating territory? Sounds likely. He's unneutered. I'd grab him and do it but he's not about to be handled. I'd lose fingers I'm sure. Wish I could. Now I'll watch for him to approach my lone female who I also can't catch. I think she avoided getting pregnant this last mating time. No signs so far but ya never know. Ugh!
