Hi, I moved your post over to Glitches - not sure what's going on here.

And to clarify, deleterman is playing Secret of the Nautilus, the Big Fish game.

I don't remember what version of Windows you have.
Try one of these...
  • Right-click the shortcut, choose "Run as Administrator" and see if you get a different result.
  • Right-click the shortcut, Properties, Compatibility mode tab, set compatibility to older version of Windows.
  • If you can find the game folder, try running the game directly from the game exe instead of using the desktop shortcut. The game exe will be a hidden file, so you'll have to tell Windows to display hidden files. Then the game exe will appear in the game folder as a sort of transparent file -- fairly easy to spot since it looks different from normal files.
  • Add the game exe to your antivirus' exclusions list.

The problem is probably caused by failure of Big Fish's Game Manager (or possibly DRM added to the game exe itself) to access and validate the game's "activated" status before starting the game. It may be being blocked by Windows or by an antivirus. The "insert disc" message is probably a relic from when games used disc-based DRM, and is caused by the DRM Big Fish uses never updating its error messages.

So the solution is probably along the lines of allowing Big Fish's activation checking procedure to work, whether it involves running as Administrator or preventing antivirus from blocking the check.

You don't by any chance have the CD version of Mystery of the Nautilus installed as well as the Big Fish download Secret of the Nautilus, do you? I was thinking maybe you were clicking on the icon for Mystery of the Nautilus rather than Secret of the Nautilus. While they are two versions of the same game, they have different names.

Yes, original disk game is Mystery of the Nautilus... Big Fish version is Secret of the Nautilus. Perhaps it's time to send Big Fish a support request.

Tally Ho's walkthrough is for the original game from 2002.
I don't know of a written walkthrough for the abridged Big Fish version that has removed so many of the puzzles and so much of the inventory. If you use a walkthrough for the 2002 version, you'll end up looking for inventory that doesn't exist to solve puzzles that don't exist.

As you can see, it's a very short game, less than an hour.

It wasn't Big Fish that cut the game like this. It was Microids/Anuman which supplied Big Fish with the cut version of the game, essentially a port of the cut down mobile iOS version.

So, did you hear something back from Big Fish about the game asking for a disk? Or did the game just finally launch?

Figured that... Sometimes they just do that! Did you reboot your computer in between? Sometimes that will do it too. Go figure!

Both reviews here at GB say that this game has lots of timed puzzles. Is this true of the Big Fish version also?

There aren't any obvious timed sequences in the video walkthrough of this mobile port.

Did they remove manual saves and leave you with a single autosave? If so, they'd have had to either remove the timed sequences, remove the consequences, or automatically restore from the beginning of the timed sequence every single time you failed. I suspect Microids/Anuman removed the timed sequences along with most other puzzles.

Yes, manual saves were removed. I can't remember if the timed sequences were removed, but I think they were.

As answered in your other post, there is a walkthrough for Mystery of the Nautilus, but not for Secret of the Nautilus which is the abbreviated Big Fish game. The walkthrough for the original game wouldn't make much sense for the Big Fish game.

Actually "Secret of the Nautilus" was the European/UK name for "Mystery of the Nautilus" back in 2002. Dreamcatcher liked to change the names of games when they published them in North America. So "Atlantis 2" became "Beyond Atlantis," "Atlantis 3" became "Beyond Atlantis 2," "Evany" became "Crystal Key 2," "Pompeii: The Legend of Vesuvius" became "Timescape: Journey to Pompeii," "Secret of the Lost Cavern" became "Echo: Secrets of the Lost Cavern," "Sherlock Holmes vs. Arsene Lupin" became "Sherlock: Nemesis," and the list goes on.

Recent digital re-releases of these games have gone back to the original European names, whether the re-release is a stripped down mobile port like Nautilus, or a full release like Sherlock Holmes vs. Arsene Lupin.

Walkthroughs may or may not have used the North American title, depending on which version of the game the writer of the walkthrough had or other reasons (like whether the website hosting the walkthrough was a North American or a European site).
