This joke is from a Johnny Carson "Carnac" bit. Carnac would divine the answer to a question in a hermetically sealed envelope. I loved it when Ed would repeat the answer with that touch of awe or sometimes disbelief in his voice and he'd get an odd look from Johnny or some kind of curse  So the "answer" is.... " a shareholder" All clues lead to a five-letter answer. The third letter from each answer will spell out what was written inside the envelope that Carnac opened. -1. shy away -2. pains -3. extent -4. famous -5. appraisal -6. adhere -7. Dredd or Judy -8. beginning -9. booth -10. Bert's buddy -11. feel -12. laundry room essential -13. taunts -14. Earth atmospheric layer -15. intuition -16. hangman's knot -17. object words -18. Mr. Arafat -19. merriment -20. passion -21. proportion -22. add fuel -23. gum brand or trajectory -24. female relative
