I've done a bit of looking and I am unable to find any firmware updates for that optical drive. Usually optical drives do not need drivers or updates... they either work or they don't. To be sure I'm understanding you correctly, you computer is no longer recognizing the drive, correct?

There are a couple of things to do before you replace the drive. First, look in your Device Manager to see if the drive is listed. I don't know what operating system you have, so I don't know how to tell you to get there. If you don't know how, just type device manager into the search box. If the drive is listed, right click it and select uninstall or delete. Then reboot your computer and see it the drive is recognized.

If it isn't, it is probably dead and you will need to replace it.

Be really, really careful of downloading ANYTHING from that website. I'm getting some warnings about it. Never download drivers or firmware updates from anyplace except from the manufacturer's website. In your case, Hitachi does not list any.

I'm still not clear on what the issue is. So your computer recognizes the drive, correct? But I'm not sure what "optical drive can't read 1 CD Drive" means. Does that mean your optical drive will not read a CD, but it does read others?

Oh... and there is no Hitachi - LG GU71N. Your drive is a Hitachi, not an LG. At least, that's what I assume. It's either one or the other.

I also did not trust this site, but what was it to do? I had to take a chance. Fortunately, there are no viruses

No this no Hitachi. My drive is a Hitachi-LG Data storage (HLDS):

This is joint venture between Hitachi and LG

Ah, I see. No wonder I couldn't find it here in the US! I didn't realize you were in the UK. Even at that manufacturer's website, there are no drivers or firmware updates available. In fact, I couldn't even find a GU71N listed under optical drives.

http://hlds.co.kr/support/?top=3&sub=1&bo_table=product

If this drive will read one CD, but not another, 99% of the time the problem is with the CD. Can you try it on another device?

Well, I'm just NOT batting 1000 here at all, am I! lol That is a very good clue about the other drives reading this CD. Is there anything unusual about this CD? Something to do with location codes? You've used a cleaner on the optical drive? Other CDs and DVDs are read OK?

I'm totally out of suggestions!!

With this disc is so that it is read by the drive, the game from this disc installs, but the attempt to run it ends with an error about the lack of a disc in the drive, despite the fact that all this time is there
The game is Larry 7

Your problem seems to be more with the game installation than with any drive problems. Give us the full name of the game and your operating system. There are reports of problems with Leisure Suit Larry 7 and modern operating systems.
If your game is in the series by Sierra, you may be able to find updates to the installer or patches to the game.

Since you have other CD drives, you could always swapping drives and install/run the game using the different drive. I don't think that will help.

OK, NOW it's making more sense. Your optical drive doesn't need a firmware update and there is nothing wrong with it. It isn't that the drive isn't reading the disk; it's that the game installation is not reading the launch file. Robert Gault is correct - this isn't an issue with the drive, it's an issue with this old game and a new operating system.

About the only way to get past this is to see if there is a NO-CD patch for the game or use one of the Sierra installation patches. I can't remember the website that has a bunch of them. I will see if I can find it...

EDIT: Here you go! Lots of good information and a link to installers including your game. Hopefully it will work with the Polish version.

No, but some of the installers on that website use DOS to install. For instance the installer for LL 7 installs the entire game to the hard drive, so it doesn't do a disk check. The disk check is what is holding you up. This is the page with the links to installers...

Wonder if it's because it's the Polish version. Didn't you say CD Projekt released this version? Any chance of contacting them?

This is just a stab in the dark, but I wonder if there is way to copy the entire CD to your hard drive and then trying to install from there?

There are 4 LL games for sale at GOG which is a partnership with CD Projekt. They all play on Windows 10. Don't know if this game is one of them though.

I am at a disadvantage because I do not have:
- the Polish version of LSL 7
- a Polish version of Windows
- a Polish version of DOS

If the Polish version of LSL 7 really is Windows only, it won't work with a DOSBox installer that's meant to work with the DOS version of LSL 7. It might install, but it won't run if it needs Windows. Also if LSL 7 uses any 16-bit code in the installer, it won't install on 64-bit Windows outside of emulation/virtualization (DOSBox, VMware, PCem, 86box, etc.).

If the Polish version of the game works with Windows 3.1x (Windows 3.1x means Windows 3.1 or 3.11), then there's a chance you can get it working inside DOSBox by installing the Polish version of Windows 3.1x inside of DOSBox. Some games meant for Windows 3.1 will play in DOSBox this way -- for example Shivers or early versions of Myst or 9: The Last Resort will play in DOSBox with Windows 3.1 installed.

There are instructions for running Windows 3.1x inside of DOSBox here
https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=9405
These instructions include links to driver downloads that are needed for Windows 3.1x. I used the S3 drivers, the SoundBlaster drivers, and the QuickTime 2.12 that are linked to in that thread.

I notice there is a Polish language file for DOSBox 0.73
scroll down near the bottom of this page
https://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1
The DOSBox-polish-lang-073.zip file contains a dosbox-0.73.conf and a polish.lng file.
I don't know if that works with the latest DOSBox (DOSBox 0.74). So you might need to get dosbox 0.73 from somewhere and add those files to the DOSBox configuration. The DOSBox-polish-lang-073.zip file didn't contain a readme, but some of the other language files do. As best I can tell, you'd
Install DOSBox 0.73
Locate where DOSBox is putting its configuration files (not its program files) on your computer. Configuration files probably go somewhere like
C:\Users\your-username\AppData\Local\DOSBox
Put the dosbox-0.73.conf and polish.lng files in that folder.
Test DOSBox. Hopefully it will be a Polish-compatible version of DOSBox after this.

Don't worry about running DOSBox 0.73 instead of 0.74. 0.73 actually works better for some games. And it may be that the polish-lang-0.73.zip files work with DOSBox 0.74 anyway (you might have to edit a file name).

As to where to find a Polish version of Windows 3.1 or 3.11, I don't know.
I bought the English version of Windows 3.11 from eBay.

+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+

An alternative to DOSBox might be if you can find a Polish version of VMware Player and install a Polish version of Windows 95 or 98 inside of it.

+_+_+_+_+_+_+_+

All the above is guesswork about what will work.
You'll get a better answer at VOGONS forum
https://www.vogons.org/viewforum.php?f=8

Not only are there experts at running "Very Old Games On New Systems" at VOGONS, but there are people from many different countries there, some of whom may have run into similar problems with language versions. Gameboomers is mainly English-speakers and mainly non-technical members, so there are fewer people here that are able to help.

Great! I was hoping Jenny would drop in on this thread... She knows MUCH more about this stuff than I do!
