I bought this game because I understand that although not recomended it can still be played in single player mode. the trouble is how to stop other people joining in. I cant seem to get the box
"private" on. can anyone help

Part of the problem is that the game isn't designed for single player, it's a co-op. So, you have to use bots in a private lobby to take the place of other players if you want to go "solo".

That bot idea sounds like something I would be interested in, but its how do you set your game to private
I tried to start the game in offline mode but I just got the "couldn't contact steam" message, but I will change my steam profile (which I wasn't aware of).

I think you have to start the game first, and then switch to offline mode. I've never done that, but you'd probably need to do it through the Steam overlay since the game is running.
