I tried the game today and also bought it (mainly because there was a 60% off sale. heh heh) I have played ten games in this series and about half have been very good, but you have to spread them out and not play too many in a row because they are all so similar. I haven't played one for six months, so I was ready to try another.
This game has some challenging puzzles, so I am very happy about that in spite of the over-acting by a main character, and the pesky puzzles compensate for the drop-dead easy ones. The graphics are cinematic in quality ~ amazing, really, and there is none of that over-saturated colored-smoke sort of stuff. The "work" that faces you in each scene is complex and not always straightforward. Most of the time, things are obvious enough and then they'll throw something at you that has you scratching your head. It has made me laugh more than once.
Like all the Mystery Trackers games, there is not a lot of shagging around from place to place, going back and forth with inventory from elsewhere; you pretty much finish everything in a locale and then leave it for good. I do prefer games more intricate than that, but this one still is interesting.
Update: I finished the game today, and was still happy with it by the end, despite some points where its plot lines started becoming hilariously silly instead of maintaining a serious detecting atmosphere. I don't have any major gripes with it except that there was one Magic Square puzzle in the Bonus Game that I solved, but because I didn't solve it with the same arrangement of numbers the way the Manual listed it, it didn't "solve." (I had to check the Manual to see why it didn't reward me.) To me, this is not acceptable. If you create a puzzle with more than one possible solution, you ought to realize this and allow for it. Speaking of the Bonus Game, it isn't really necessary since it doesn't advance the plot but more or less repeats the same Good-Guy-Gets-Kidnapped routine as the Main Game. So, the standard game would suffice, unless you just like more playing time. I would say this is not a game for folks who like an easy stroll. You'll work for your sardines in this watery world! Well done addition to the Series.
