Bioware has announced an upcoming Dragon Age release and included with it the hashtag: #TheDreadWolfRises

See the recent message and new teaser/trailer here.

For those not familiar with the lore of Dragon Age, the Dread Wolf is the Elven god Fen'Harel, known as the God of Betrayal and the one who locked away the Elven gods, which lead to their subjugation by other races. Even so, as was shown in the first game DA: Origins, the "wild" Elves known as the Dalish, place a statue of Fen'Harel in their camps as a reminder.

The teaser for DA4 gives us very little to go on, so just thought I'd throw it out there. What direction do you think Bioware will take this game? We've seen huge development of Human and Qunari characters and the Inquisition character Solos gave us a channel to dig deeper into the Elvin mythos. For those that played Inquisition, you saw a reference to this and possibly a hint to this upcoming game
Click to reveal..
Solas is referred to after the final battle as the Dread Wolf.
Do you think this story-arch will continue to delve into the Elvin side of the DA universe? Any thoughts on what it may mean, the return of Fen'Harel?

I feel a lot more like I do now, then when I first got here

Wow. It's been a few years since my last game of DA:I. I love the Elven history. It makes the games so rich.

In my last game, Solas was my character's romance partner,
Click to reveal..
so the ending was particularly traumatic cry cry for Our Heroine. Personally, I would like to see the Inquisition storyline and characters continue with Solas/Wolfie as the main antagonist. Mostly because my girl wants her own back after that betrayal. Hell hath no fury, etc.

But...woo hoo! More Dragon Age!

I had the hots for Solas, too! This sounds interesting. Anything with the Dragon Age continuing story should be wonderful.

I see you are looking to load up the first ones Mad, I'm sure you'll enjoy them. thumbsup My personal favorite is DA1, it did a great job setting up the Dragon Age universe and opened up a very interesting variety of races and their backstories.

Has there been any improvements in the interface for DA1? I played with keyboard mouse and it was horrible to try to finesse any of the big fights.

Gardens put to bed for the winter. Time for some gaming!

Some updates to the game did improve execution in the party character combat automation, but in my experience it still isn't 100% effective and seems open to interpretation by the AI. It's somewhat of an awkward system that was designed with the intent of trying to please hell bent for leather types while giving the pause feature to those who like planning a strategy mid-battle. They tried to simplify the D&D based system and sort of nerfed the combat by pulling key moves out of the mix. I kind of accept that when I go into DA1 and just set the automation in a way that seems like it will make the most sense for the party. Invariably, it gets tweaked along the way after a few battles.

EDIT: Personally, I find the mage characters the most successful with this system. Especially after you add the buff that uses their magic attribute levels to give them better (or any) martial skills.

Now I want to play my Dragon Age trilogy again. I always wanted to see how Morrigan would react if she fell in love with a dwarf. grin

EDIT: Installing now...

It's hard to create a good-looking dwarf Male. Morrigan is going to be so confused...

LOL, after Mad started asking questions on DA1 I got tempted to download the GOG Ultimate version to give it a go and got sucked into a new game. My go-to character is usually a Dalish, but I might try building a basic human tank this time around and see how they fair.

This is my first run-through with a dwarf. I chose the noble path. As usual I ended up as a thief/assassin type because tanking is just not my style.

You know, I've always wondered just exactly HOW (and why) a noble person ends up being a thief? headscratch

Hey, Mad -- wanna play Dragon Age Origins?

Sorry, hagatha !! Only just saw your post oops

And thank you for the invitation grin

However, I won't be playing Dragon Age just yet. I already have three games on the go and they will keep me busy for quite some time as I am definitely not the fastest game player lol

Hey, Mad, I know what you mean. But you must play the DA games at some point, especially the first and third ones. As in Baldur's Gate and BG II, the party member interactions are wonderful.

I'm ashamed to say, hagatha, that in my game collection I have at least 10 RPG's that I haven't yet even attempted and way more Adventures than that shocked

Time and opportunity just seem to be against me in game playing these days .. plus it doesn't help that I take so long to get through a game lol

Still, I thoroughly enjoy what I DO play and that's what it's all really about.

EDIT :
And, of course, I do fully intend to "gradually" play ALL the games in my collection hamster

Mad, I must have 75 games I've never played. snicker Some of them came in bundles, but still, I deliberately bought most of them. Some I started to play and rejected, it's true. Most I just look at and feel guilty. Every now and again I do find a hidden gem, like System Shock 2.

But I always come back to the classics. I can't remember if you're a Baldur's Gate veteran, but I have to say, Dragon Age Origins really hits the same mark for story and party interactions. Hopefully someday you'll fire it up!

I could have that many myself, hagatha, if I lump RPG's and Adventures together eek

And I bought them all "on purpose" and do fully intend to play them all .... if I'm fortunate enough to live that long lol
So I certainly WILL be firing up Dragon Age at some time.

I can't describe myself as a Balder's Gate "veteran". Even though I very much like the games and have played the first one more than once because I liked it the best.

I would say Morrowind is the one I've enjoyed the most (and re-played the most times over the years) and I have no doubt at all that I will play it yet again dance

It's amazing how many gamers developed such a strong affinity for Solas. Since the teaser/trailer was released a number of "reaction to..." videos have been posted on YouTube ranging from cute to fanatical. Seems like it's old school week, I keep firing up past games due to these reminders. I've got Fallout 4 going, triggered by our FO76 discussion, Fallout Las Vegas triggered by Obsidian's Outer Worlds release announcement and after downloading the DAO Ultimate pack from GOG, I'm thinking of starting that, but I've only played through DA: Inquisition once, so I may have to put all the others to the side and delve back into that game again...

Dragon Age Inquisition requires a major time commitment! I've played it through twice, and started a third game back when before life started to get in the way. I'll be firing it up next, I suppose. I might skip DA 2 this time around. It's a good game, but not in the same league as the other two; the same dreaded sophomore slump I saw in Witcher 2 as well.

I absolutely love Dragon Age: Origins but I would give DA:I the slightest of edges; it's longer by far, it has a huge open world, and you have a stronghold to hang out in and upgrade.

Dragon Age 2 is a good game, but it suffers because of the repetitive nature of the locations; almost all of the quests take place in the same few areas. On the other hand, it still has those great party interactions and it's still well worth playing in its own right. It just doesn't stand up to the other two.

I really need to invest more time into DA:Inquisition. During my first play through, I was sort of linear and didn't explore as much as I could of; too focused on the main events. It's been so long since I played, it's going to be like a new game, which is a good thing. grin

DA:I is huge. It takes a long time to complete everything, especially if you try to find all of those elusive mosaic pieces (and I have yet to complete a single one).

Now I remember the thing about DA: Origins that disappoints me the most; at the very end, when you say goodbye to all of your your companions (or decide who to take with you) you can't even TALK to your loyal, bonded Mabari, and you can't take him with you, which of course you would do, because he's BONDED to you, for goshsakes, and wouldn't let you leave without him! And then they compounded the error by not having him in Awakenings. Instead, they give you Oghren again, but it's the old, grumpydrunk Oghren, not the one he becomes at the end of Origins. Phooey. I want my dog.

Of all the characters in DA:O, Oghren is my least favorite. I wasn't too enthused with Awakenings, it felt somewhat rushed. Like they were trying to fill in the gaps between the Darkspawn and the Archdemon. The whole grey line, which of the two evils do you chose thing also felt like an object lesson in politics, something that seems to be getting relatively common in Bioware games. I liked the heavy magic/supernatural element of Inquisition, but honestly could have done without some of the relationship dialogue. I guess as I get older I like more overarching depth in my games rather than the character bonding type.

And in Awakenings, if you pick up quests in the wrong order (which means you have to ignore one of the very first quest givers in the game -- they soldier standing right beside the city gates as you go in) you mess up a companion quest permanently, so I never play without a quest guide by my side. Also, even if you do everything required to make it possible to save your stronghold it will still fall because of a bug. Annoying. Actually, it has a number of quest bugs that prevent quest completions, and they were never patched.

Still, it's fun to play around with the new skill trees. I just give Oghren all his booze and his personal quest item and leave him at the Keep. By higher levels all you really need is your archer, your assassin and your two mages. A fighter is almost beside the point.

EDIT: Ugh. I forgot that DA:I has to be played on Origin. I HATE Origin. It hangs in the middle of downloading, and there are endless problems with it. That's why I never did get around to replaying my Mass Effect games.

EDIT: Oh, for the love of Pete. Origin won't update. Can't sync my games. I can't launch the game offline. If there was any other way of buying and playing this game, I would do it right this very second.

EDIT AGAIN: Finally, got it all working. Oh man, I love this game. This time I'm playing a Qunari female mage. I love the little details in the game; most people flinch at the first sight of "me." It's kind of like being an Amazon.

So, now that I'm well into the game, which is my first play since I finished the entire story three years ago, I see that the Dread Wolfie stuff is really all over the place and much of the dialogue and chit chat does give some pretty strong hints as to the ending of the game and its big reveal. I can't see how it's possible for any sequel to be anything but a story about the elves and their history.

I love the way characters from the previous games show up, too. I feel as though I have lived through epic times and am seeing the birth of legends.

Interesting. I never got around to playing the third installation. 🙂

Are they dead? Yes. Unlike you they have but one life...and they wasted it for your sake!

Indeed. 🙂 Might just try to make up some more spare time for games, and for posting here again!

On topic, I read that DA:I had tons of fetch quests, what are your impressions on that?

Drizzt! It's awesome to see you on the forum again. I saw your other posing over at Mixed Bag, congrats on all your accomplishments both intellectual (PhD) and biological (daughter) thumbsup

Hagatha will probably have more input on DA:I. I've only played through it once, shortly after release. The scavenger hunt/fetch style quests seem fairly common in several of the other games I play fairly often (Elder Scrolls, Fall Out) so I wasn't bothered too much, or maybe just didn't notice that there was an exceptional amount of those type of quests.

Hope you get some time to recreate (read as gaming) and stop in at the forum.

TM grin

I feel a lot more like I do now, then when I first got here

Hey, Drizzt, nice to see you back here. I figured you had gone off to be an adult. And here I am, happily retired now. How the years fly past.

DA: I is pretty multi-faceted in terms of the type of quests you're given. There are several huge areas to explore, and while there are some fetch quests, most of the quests are given from your stronghold in various different ways and involve exploration rather than visiting town X and finding person Y. Some are given by party members and other NPC's, other appear on a strategic War Table. Each area has its own set of quests, and its own set of collectibles. Party members each have their own major quest line, too, and party interactions are, as in all Bioware games, pretty nuanced and have minor consequences. It's also a very long game. I love it. I'm on my fourth run through it and still never get tired of it.

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.
