I actually got the idea for this post from my comments on another thread pertainging to The Black Mirror. My anser to this question hands down is Samuel Gordon, the character you have the misfortune to play in the game. In reality do you really think if you've been away from somewhere for 12 years and then you tell a long time worker there that he'll be fired if he doesn't react to your every whim that you'd be around much longer???

I think I know how this game ends - Samuel winds up face down on the floor with a knife in his back, and forty seven wounds, as everyone in the game takes a stab at him!!

The character Brink in The Dig was a very annoying know-it-all! I gladly would have thrown him off the cliff.

The little sidekick robot in one of the Journeyman games! ...was it 'Arthur'? He interrupted me every few minutes and I finally had to shut him down to get anywhere! Ack! I know he was trying to be helpful, but it was as if he thought that I was some kind of a blind dummy that couldn't see any of the clues without his help!

Could be! I'd have to reread the threads to see. That pretty much goes for all sidekicks, other than the one in Tony Tough, whom you didn't really see much of......... and when you did, he was hysterical! <G>

Yeah, arthur...that was one of my favorite characters. I thought his input was great.

No offense, Porthos, I'm sure that there others out there who liked him, as well. I just always felt that he was interrupting my thoughts.

Arthur has a very interesting effect on Journeyman 3. The first time I played the game, I thought ARthur was a hints mechanism or something and turned him off. The game played very seriously to me. Which at the time - I really enjoyed.

A few years later - I replayed the game and forgot to "turn off" Arthur's comments. What a difference in the game atmosphere! With Arthur it plays very funny, has a campy atmosphere and is just a totally different experience. Some very funny lines as you get deeper into it. I recommend trying it both ways. You'll get two games for the price of one.

I too think Arthur is the funniest character in a game. And besides being cute and funny, he really gives a lot of interesting historical information, esp. in JP 2.

I don't know about who the most annoying character is though, I'll have to think about it more.

I didnt like Arthur at first because his voice didnt run well for me so I turned him off when I first played and enjoyed Journeyman sans sidekick. Back then I'd have agreed with you, Lady Kestrel.

After we got a better setup, his presence was more pleasing because his comments didn't make my game just about freeze anymore and he sounded warm instead of just weird. Then I could finally concentrate on what he was saying & enjoy the jokes. Laura is right, Arthur's presence or absence changes the feel of the game (esp J3) tremendously. (Course Laura generally *is* right heh)

Hmmmmmmm... I may have to replay J3! I didn't care for him in one of the first two so I just played without him in J3. If he's cracking jokes, then that I don't want to miss! <G>

Don't want to start a riot but there was a certain oversized hamster sidekick in Grim Fandango who prompted me to turn down the sound whenever his annoyanceship was within earshot. Killed an otherwise splendid game dead for me.

Glottis was a demon, not a hamster. Okay, now that you mention it, maybe he did look a bit hamsterish. But no mere hamster could have looked so terrific in a sailor suit.

He was also ahead of his time in the use of chrome as an artistic medium.

By the time I finished "Syberia" I earnestly desired to render Oscar speechless.

I really detested the tiger tamer in Faust. He certainly deserved what he got!!

Strangely enough, although it is definitely my favorite game, even above TLJ...its got to be Phoenix the sadistic Kidnapper/Murderer in "In Memoriam" he keeps calling me "His Little Friend"

I gave up on "The 11th Hour" because I couldn't stand Stauf for one more minute! I probably would have given up on it eventually anyway because I wasn't enjoying it, but Stauf made the decision that much easier for me <G>!

For me it was agent Winslow in Black Dahlia. He drove me crazy with his Jim-Bo & sport. I wanted to reach in the puter & back hand the arrogant s.o.b.

Come to think of it, I'm a little surprised no one's mentioned Flipper from TLJ. I wasn't actually offended by his cursing, like some people were, but he did get so annoying I kept wishing I had a shotgun in my inventory...

...or at least the ability to type in, text-adventure style, "Kill Flip," and have it tell me that wasn't very nice.

I found Arnold's (the gov.) voice annoying after I fell in the lava a few times in Torins Passage.

I couldn't stand Tony Tough, his voice, nor his *ssine comments. Long before the end of the game I was ready to strangle him.

KQ8...yep..that was it for me! Even though I liked the game, Connor said "~tis beyond my reach" a zillion times! I even walked him through the hot lava...he still said it! LOL

Almost forgot about Winslow, however Winslow I believe was simply putting on an act to hide his true personality, in Samuel's case I believe It actually WAS his personality.

so far (and I'm only in ch1) Samuel from BM is arrogant and autocratic... nothing like a true aristocrat.... Oh and the worker you are referring to had only been with them for a year.... (if you mean the gardener!!)

They were deliberately annoying though, that was part of the humor & charm. I'm not sure that counts...

Oh oh, I thought of one! Kate Walker's fiance (from Syberia, of course)! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="tongue.gif" /> I can't even remember the jerk's name, what was it? And geez, what a big baby. Kate's "friend" wasn't so great either, sleeping with the fiance, or did they just kiss, or did they not really say, I forget, but it was definitely something...sheesh.

Other than that, I usually love most of the characters in my games.

And as for Samuel Gordon (mind, I'm only in the second chapter), I did notice his arrogance and got a little surprised and angry at his yelling at Henry and Morris, but I was thinking they're just trying to set us up for realizing he has some anger problems or something (associated with his headaches, I dunno), since he did ask himself at one point why he had yelled at Morris. Just my thought, but I haven't finished the game.

Absolutely a TIE, imho, between Henry Stauf (7th Guest) and Fluffy Fluffy Bun Bun (Toonstruck). BOTH of those characters actually kept me from finishing the games. I would just get way too annoyed each time I either heard their voices or their sarcastic and biting comments. ICK!

Kristi (sp?), Kate's fiance was Dan, and yeah, I though he was a jerk too. I was thinking, "what a WHINER!"..Also, Zack from The Longest Journey was an idiot. He thought he was all that...PAH!

Winslow in Black Dailia was smug and annoying, but we do get to see him get his later, but YES! Kate's fiance Dan! I yelled at the screen more than once "Would you please throw that d*** cellphone down a hole somewhere!" He obviously gets free long distance

AGREED! For one, I got tired of going around with a flashlight, but the precipitating annoyance was that, after trying for quite a while, I still hadn't solved that Knights problem on the truncated chess board. That plus the fact that I had quite enough of Stauf in 7th GUEST caused me to put it aside. Who knows, if I get desperate I might take it up again, but I'm going to have to get pretty desperate.

That suggests an idea. Adventure games don't have the same expansions as do RPGs (I can only think of realMyst with its Rime Age.)

How about Adventure expansions where you can choose the game character of your choice and have them dunked in a vat of baked beans, or sent to a Trappist monastery, or given rocket powered roller skates as a reward for finishing the game? There's not enough imagination around nowadays.

I also liked Arthur in Journeyman 2&3. He added great humor to the game IMO.
This isn't an AG, but Winston, the butler in Tombraider 2 that pops up sometimes just about drove me crazy with his rattling glasses and tray. I shut him in the bathroom in Nightmare in Vegas.

I'm in Chapter 5 in Black Mirror and starting to form some theories of my own about Samuel. I am so curious as to whether my theories are correct that I'm finding it hard to be patient enough to deal with the puzzles. Who wants to mess about with the plumbing when you're starting to have serious questions as to whether the game's hero is...um, well, never mind.

At least the puzzles continue and forward the game to new plot links Becky and not just puzzles for the sake of having puzzles. Keep on with some real surprises and questions await you.

Henry Stauf....totally! 11th Hour...and 7th Guest - what a pain in the (pick anatomical part!). He about drove me over the top!
