CD Access has a game package which includes Zork Nemesis and two other games for $24.95. While I will probably never play the other two games I was wondering if it was worth it to get Zork Nemesis.
Also, does Zork Nemesis play on Windows 98? Two of the games said DOS but I don"t think it was Zork Nemesis.
Thanks,
Susan wave

No...... I don't think it is worth that price just to get Zork Nemesis.... I am selling my copy of it (which includes 3 CD's in paper sleeves) for only $5 including shipping.....
Yes, it should run under Win98....

I think it may be worth the price because one of the games in that package besides Zork Nemsesis is SpyCraft: The Great Game which is one of the first adventure games I ever bought and was quite enjoyable(the other game I have no idea about). In it you play a Spy for the CIA who has to unravel the mystery of the assisination of a candidate for the Russian presidency in order to prevent the killing of the US President (here's a link to more indepth review ) It's moderately difficult but am sure there are walkthroughs online that can find to solve it or just post your questions at the Hints section and I can try and guide you through things if needed. The edition I bought ran on Windowns 95 (as did the reviewers) so think you could get it to run in 98 with little problem.

EDIT NOTE: I found that Dragon has SpyCraft at a very low $2.95 US if anyone is interested but they placed it in the action section if anyone was curious about the game See Here

hope this helps,
Brian

Any Zork is a GOOD Zork...Nemesis kinda goes in a different direction than "Return" or ZGI... BUT it is great in is't own right. I however am with most...not pay THAT price for the game.....it is good but also try half.com, an ebay company. I found many good games for much less than what people were asking...Good Luck

Linds,

I played Nemesis in Win 98 and had some problems with Quick Time. Nothing game stopping but some of the cutscenes were choppy and prone to freezing. It was my specific system but I think, knowing what I know now, that it was either a QT thing or hardware acceleration. Great game though, really grabbed my by the throat.

Zork Nemesis is one of the great achievements of the adventure game genre, period. It's that rarest of adventure games that does EVERYTHING right. Great graphics, GREAT story, terrific acting, fantastic puzzles. It also has the most beautiful, sad atmosphere.

Procrastinate NOW!! Don't put it off!!

Bravo and "ditto," Mr. Ray, if I should be so bold as to tie up my wagon to this premise! smile

Zork Nemesis didn't use QuickTime. It used its own game engine - called Z-vision. It allowed you 360° panning in a similar way to some QuickTime games.

Although it used the Duck codec by TrueMotion for the actual video playback. There was also a tweak to get rid of the "every second line being black" to make the videos look much better.

Incidentally, has anybody got the soundtrack to this game?

I absolutely loved it!

Hmmm. Interesting. What happened to me was I got that same kind of jittery, semi-freeze-up stuff that I get with QT sometimes. Almost identical to the problems I had with Obsidian. I'll have to reinstall Nemesis and see if I can smooth it out via hardware acceleration. I need to play it again anyway. Like Ray said, it's one of the all-time greats.

Mike

Hi Brendan,

What was the tweak?

Hanksdog, fyi.. Dragon.ca is a great store, but they only sell games in jewel cases, no boxes. That's why their prices are always so low.

As my previous postings in this topic said, it would be 3 CD's in their paper sleeves and would be $5.00 including shipping..... smile

Note, this is also what dragon.ca will be shipping (No box and no jewel case, either...)

The tweak was editing some existing text file (possibly a .inf) in the game's installed directory ... there was a line in the file that was clearly related to doubling the lines of the video so that you'd get bright video instead of black on every second line.

ZORK NEMESIS jockeys around 12 to 14 in my list of favorite gmes, so it is clear that I think highly of it. The ending was, shall I say, unexpected, but OK. Although there are some references to the Zork tradition, there was no reliance on previous games. In fact, it is quite different than any of the other Zork games. There is one sort of yukky episode in it, but otherwise nothing to turn one off. Get it, play it, and I am sure that you will enjoy it. The puzzles are not all that demanding either. Enjoy! thumbsup

Did you try disabling autorun? (called "Disk Detector" in XP I believe)
Sometimes this helps with games in Win 98 when they crash while changing CD's.
Sometimes.
