Sometime in November, I think, girlgeek wrote that her Sanitarium disc exploded. Well, today I was replaying the game and lo and behold the disc exploded in my drive and now my CD drive won't work. My husband and I tried to get all the pieces out (lots of them) but the drive door now will not stay shut. We called Dell and had to order a new drive which will take about a week to get here so no games for me for a while. Isn't it funny that it was the same game that exploded? <img border="0" alt="cry" title="" src="graemlins/cry.gif" />

That's truly bizarre. When you played it the first time was it on a slower cd rom? I'm wondering if the speed exerts too much pressure on the plastic. Or maybe the company used a defective batch of cd's. My monitor went on the fritz today. I was playing a game before lunch, and everything was fine. I went back to use the computer and the monitor was dead. Did anyone else have computer problems today? It seems like a bad day for some of us.

That is weird fildil. frown Does anyone know what causes this? Is it the speed of the CD drive?

I don't know, I played this game twice on the same computer. I never had any trouble before. It was so strange to hear this sharp noise, like a backfire. I'm glad I don't have Omega Stone yet, it would kill me not being able to play it. I'm in the middle of Post Mortem. Sometimes when I stop in the middle of a game, I forget everything that happened already. Must be my senior brain. I might have to start the game over when my husband replaces the CD drive (hope not).

Wow, fildil.....Sorry to hear that you experienced the exploding Santarium CD problem! Seems that perhaps the publishers may have inadvertently gotten ahold of some inferior stock or something. Hope you get your CD ROM drive replaced ASAP...Omega is comin' down the lane! laugh laugh laugh

Love, Witchen =O)

Yikes this is scary.. I have played Sanitarium twice now. I wonder if it's a particular edition or supplier. eek I think I will not play it again any time in the future - how weird that this is happening.

I stopped playing in the middle of the game about 2 months ago, intending to go back and finish it later. Now I don't know if I will. I just got my computer to play some previously unplayable games and don't know if I want to risk it. frown

Skippy,

Bad computer day for me too. I was trying to revive an old 386 I had sitting in the basement. Had everything going fine this morning. Now it just beeps and the beep code says: "Something is wrong deep in your CMOS. All your chips on the motherboard will have to be replaced." Oh well, this baby is heading for the recycle afterall.

It sounds like a conspiracy to me. Our computers are ganging up on us.

Dont forget me I was the other person that had that happen to. I was first or atleast before GirlGeek.

Anyone else I guess should make a back up copy first, thats not illegal for your own use as a back up.

Have you taken out the CD-Rom yet? And if you have do you know who made it? Mine was made by Pine Technologies. I always wonder if it was a faulty made rom.

On the back of one of the remaining CDs it says "Made in the USA by L&M".

Yeah, that actually makes THREE of us that had disc 1 of Sanitarium explode in our CD drives! But what can we do? We can't PROVE the discs were defective, but...I will say that the disc was THIN for a CD, I thought. I've since replayed using a burnt disc sent by a friend, and I compared it to the shards and pieces of the original disc.....that disc was THIN in comparison. So...perhaps the game company owes all three of us new drives! (But...that will never happen, so...we just bite our tongues and carry on.) I feel for you guys, I really do. I just replaced my drive from that happening last year....just two weeks ago! Went for a long time with only my burner!

PLAYING ON PC: World of Warcraft...nothing else...there is no need for ANY other game when you have THIS one to play!! LOL

I got the CD-Rom comapny to replace their Rom for me as it was faulty. I thought and I still think they might be making these Roms and supplying them to these other companys that make you computers. Who knows, their name might be listed under the label under another label on the bottom of the Rom.

Oh, gee.....

I still haven't played Sanitarium. The game is still pristine in it's box. I'm surely going to check the "apparent" durability of the cd. Will it seem too thin?

I've had music cds shatter and I did notice how much thinner cds are these days than they used to be. I also know something about physics and I would imagine most of you know enough about physics to recall easily that the force exerted on the cd is centrifigal force (or is it centrifical?).

Also we can easily recall that "law" about "equal and opposite reaction" so we can deduce (we all mostly like deducing stuff here) that as our cds whirl, forces are exerted in the opposite direction at the same time, eventually causing our cds to shatter, if played often enough and long enough. Thin cds would give way sooner but all would give way eventually, that whole "entropy" thing applies to everything, even our favorite cds.

Sigh. Just in case my Sanitarium cd is "armed to shatter" in the factory by "virtue" of being made on a too thin slice of plastic, I'll wait on playing it a good while longer. I want to have a working hard drive for awhile longer.

I've used Pine Technology Delta CD Rom drives for years and never had a problem with them. I still have a 52X in the box (was using it until I got a Tohiba CDRom/DVD drive. Keeping the Delta in case of emergency, and yes I did play Sanitarium a good way through with it. Plan to finish off the game soon (I had no problem with Disk 1 and probably won't be back to again unless it's needed for the end game.

I also had a defective first cd. I played the game for about 2 minutes and then noticed my cd-rom acting strange and the game would not play. I removed the cd and it had a hairline crack from the middle hole outward. I am sure it was borderline explosion. I have recently replaced the game, but, I plan on copying it before playing.

Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.

My disc exploded in the courtyard. I'd like to get another game, but I'm afraid that the same thing would happen. Does anybody have any ideas about this?

Play it with a slow drive I guess. Or get something like CD Bremse, which forces your drive to spin at a slower rate.

I may try to copy my Sanitarium CD's and play from the copies. It seems that at least some of the original Sanitarium CD's may have been made from a brittle type of plastic.

My husband has found a software program called "Game Drive" it has you make a virtual copy with its program and then it lets you play the game without the cd. But we found out as long as your using it it overrides your cd-rom and you have to run cd through the game drive program but not copy them. If you would like to use it it is free for the first 30 days. It worked for my hubby with pool of radiance. Dont have to change disc's.

Thanks for the info Josie. I'm waiting for Dell to send me my new CD drive. Maybe I'll look into it then.

Probably not "EXPLODED" so much as "was torn apart."
A 52X CD drive is enormously fast and if there's any kind of hairline crack in the CD, the centrifugal force can tear the CD apart. When you consider how fast the CD is spinning in the drive, it isn't surprising that it's like an explosion.

Like I said, if your drive works with CD Bremse and can be made to spin slower, there shouldn't be a problem.

Also, I have a CDRW that lets you choose the speed at which the drive spins. I right-click the drive letter in Explorer, choose Properties, and there is a Settings tab with a drop-down menu box that lets me choose the drive's maximum speed. Mine goes as slow as 8X. This is with a Plextor drive. Maybe other CDRW brands have something similar.

My hubby found out what his problem was whith his computer was with that Game Drive program was. He has another program called "Tweik Mu" I think and the settings on that made it override the game settings, so you shouldnt have any problem.

Oh, if anyone is interested in the "GameDrive" Program you can buy it a Best Buy for $19.99 my hubby bought it today. He likes it, it keeps him from haveing to swap his cd's out and maybe scratch them.
