After spending several days just getting this game up and running, I enjoyed that wonderful feeling that comes when you finally see the opening scenes and settle down for some serious gaming. laugh

I love FMV games and this one is particularly fascinating to me. I've been at it for almost a week now--almost to the end and I'm enjoying it even more than I did the first time. I love the plot because it takes me back to the days when there was so much excitement and enthusiasm for the new world of cyberspace. Got me to remembering how excited I was the first time I ever went on-line. thumbsup

I agree, Cynch, that this game is worth the trouble. It is suspenseful and engaging and has a cast of wonderful actors and actresses, including, IMHO, Christopher Walken playing Magnotta. I think he does that snarly and grissled character just right. And the puzzles, with the exception of the ones I couldn't get, of course, were all excellent.

You make me realize how much I want to replay this game - Oh, I'm reminded of another excellent feature, that you can get three or four different endings depending on your choices. Well, I may have to move this closer to the front of the to be played list!

laugh Andy

Hi Andy......
Yeh, not only some really remarkable acting & actors (it was fun seeing Jimmy Walker again), but an amazing storyline. The concept of solving puzzles to enter the different websites (referred to as "wells")was unique and reminded me of those old write-protected DOS games where you had to enter certain info in order to run the game. lol

A special "thank you" to Inferno...I couldn't have installed this game without the excellent instructions she provided on her website.

Cynch, if you still have Ripper installed on your computer I recently discovered an easter egg for this game that I thought I'd share. I'm not sure if you will get it to work as I played the game on Dos. Though here goes, instead of typing the Ripper to start up the game, if you type in the word Riper you will get a little surprise.

hope this helps,
Brian

I've been wanting to play Ripper ever since it first came out. I could never get it installed with WIN98. About 6 months ago I purchased a new PC with XP and tried installing it again. This time I managed to get past the setup screen and it ran fine except there was no sound. I was very disappointed but someone helped me out and I finally got to play it. In fact, I've played it about 6 times in the past 6 months. It was well worth the many years I waited.

These were the instructions I used to get it up and running (NOTE: VDMSound works on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It does not work on Windows 95, 98 or Me.)

Step 1: Get VDMSound. http://ntvdm.cjb.net/
Step 2: Get update1 for VDMSound.
Step 3: Get VDMSound Launchpad.
Step 4: Install VDMSound.
Step 5: Overwrite the files in the VDMSound directory with the ones in update1.
Step 6: Extract the files in the VDMS Launchpad to the VDMS directory and run INSTALL.BAT.
Step 7: Find Ripper's setup program, right-click on it, and choose the "Run with VDMS" that does NOT have the musical notes icon.
Step 8: Set up Ripper using a Sound Blaster 16 on address 220h, IRQ 7, DMA 1, and Hi-DMA 5.
Step 8: Find the Ripper executable, right-click on it, and choose the "Run with VDMS" that does NOT have the musical notes icon.
Step 9: Play and enjoy. Remember that you need to select "Run with VDMS" every time.

Optionally, you can tinker with the various settings using the "Run with VDMS" option that has the musical notes icon next to it. This will also create a .VLP alias that you can use to run the game every time with the same settings without needing to reconfigure or right-click the executable.

Hope this helps someone.

Glad I was able to help you. This is one of my all time favorite games. Just one question...
Did it take as many "margarita's" as it did for me to write the setup??? And I have to say a big thankyou to the following gamers who helped me get that game running on Win98 and WinXP:
  • BJ (bchan1493)
    Gameboomers
  • Kate

  • Greg Peeler

Hi Inferno......
Well, I would have enjoyed a few margaritas, but they weren't necessary. I printed out your setup walkthrough and followed it to the letter. Your instructions covered and solved any problem I might have encountered. laugh

In fact, I had more trouble disabling my McAfee Security System than I did installing/running RIPPER. lol

Thanks to you I'm looking forward to revisiting a lot of my old games. You know, actually I think RIPPER ran better on XP than it did on WIN 98.

Sennebac....to install/run RIPPER on WIN 98 you will need the patch (1.03) and you might also need to run TURBO to slow your drive down. As I recall, I set it at 65% and that worked fine for me. Without Turbo running, the game would stall or crash under WIN 98.
