The "...running for a walkthrough" thread reminds me of one of my biggest peeves about adventures, exaggerated pixel hunting.

What's your most memorable experience with a frustrating pixel hunt? Mine is finding all 13 of the pyramid pieces at the end of Cydonia/Lightbringer! THAT was a challenge!

Love, Witchen =O) smile

Ohhh,

Loads spring to mind... but recently, trying to find obscure things in Nautilus!!

So you mods have titles now????

Oh and your signature.. well I am lazy and untidy by nature, so that really rings true!! If I sort everything then I don't have to waste time hunting through piles of stuff to find what I want!!! Next project... categorising Stewarts CD collection lol He has stacks of em mostly for work and can never finds what he wants!!

My personal fave was in Faust - where there is a bad coding error in a bthroom. You are supposed to open a drawer - but nothing happens. That is because the open drawer part is actually over on an adjacent wall. So you click to the right of the visible drawer and it opens but over on the wall. Hit this one by accident as I was clicking in a near state of insanity after 2 days of being stuck.

#2 pixel moment: I love Black Dahlia and have played it twice already. But there is a couple of places that you can't advance unless you hit all the hot spots. I was pulling hair for over a day the first time trying to trigger the advance to the next level. I think it was a curtain I hadn't moved or something that nebulous.

The worst pixel-hunt I remember is in a childs game called Mystery at Greveholm 3. It is from Sweden i think.

You must use a candle to find a draft, then place a piece of plaster at the hole. You can't see the holes. This is done many times a cross a wall. Even it is for children, it is difficult to do.

I haven't lost it, I just can't find it....

That was an annoying puzzle, but it wasn't a pixel hunt.

A pixel hunt is when you have to click on every single pixel on the screen hoping to find the exact one to pick up an object or use an object on. If you have no trouble seeing an object, but can't seem to find the right spot to click on to pick it up, that's a pixel hunt. It's also a pixel hunt if you can't see the object, but know it's there.

The worst pixel hunt I can recall was looking for a snake scale in the grass in GK1. I think there was something else in that same grass that I also had trouble finding.

Oh, Jenny, that snake scale in GK1 gets my vote, too. I had to ask for help to know there was even something to LOOK for, much less find it.

I think some of the bippies in Anachronox were tough, too, although I'm not sure that is exactly a "pixel hunt." Finding the special "power-up bugs" was a pixel hunt, without a doubt. Had to get a WT to find some of those tiny things.

Laura,

The Faust bathroom in Chapter 4 wasn't actually a pixel hunt or a bug. It was really another of the very difficult puzzles in the game, worthy of inclusion in Chapter 2, which was dang near impossible to play thru without hints or walkthru. The clue was the mirror and the positioning of reflections if my memory serves.

I had to visit hints to get past this one. What made it all the more difficult was the general theme of pixel hunting that pervaded the entire game and detracted from my enjoyment of it. The player was setup to expect just another pixel hunt here, which camouflaged the recognition that lateral thinking could solve the puzzle.

I'm dealing with on now! Trying to find all the parts of the hidden drawing in the painting in "Post Mortem". Not even sure how many parts I'm missing!

Would say the Mystery of the Nautilus. But while not much of a pixel hunt, did anyone else have problems getting off the pendulum in GKII? Clicked too low and kept getting, don't have time for that now. Took a couple of tries before wasn't too low or high. lol

I had one heck of a time finding one of those scraps of paper on the road in the early scenes of LAW & ORDER. If it weren't for LenG's help, I wonder if I ever would have found it. It was almost the same color as the road it was sitting on. <img border="0" alt="cry" title="" src="graemlins/cry.gif" />

Oh, Witchen, you reminded me of that miserable experience. The rest of the game was fun, but that part was MOST exasperating. Fortunately I tend to forget bad things that happen to me and remember only the good, so that part had pretty much been expunged from my memory. Should I thank you for bringing it back?

Rowan -- LOL!!!

Finding the entrance to the underwater dial room in the Stoneship age in Myst. I spent hours trying to figure out why I couldn't progress in the game. Once I was messing around in the hallway when the light source went out, and just through random clicking I must have hit the right pixel, because I kept getting black screen after black screen, as though I was stumbling around somewhere in the dark. The knowledge that there must be something there didn't help me though when I returned with the lights on.

Finally had to buy my first cheat book to figure it out.

I had forgotten about the dreaded Null Void - arggh!!! That would get my vote too. But another especially annoying one to me was the X-Files in the warehouse. Movement was somewhat cumbersome, and I kept missing the pixels I needed to click on.

Hi All...and more really good examples.... happydance

Nickie: Yesterday, I was sitting here thinking of famed pixel hunts and my eyes landed on the X-Files box in the cabinet. I knew there was a dreadful pixel hunt hiding in there, but I couldn't remember the details. Thanks for sharing that one....practically gave me chills to recall it! FOTFL lol laugh

I agree with Reenie, the glass sliver in GK1. There was also a part of Amerzone where I remember looking all over the place for a leaf on a tree in a forest.

If by seeking a certain hotspot equals a 'pixel unt' then there is that 'trying to find just the right place to go up or down those stairs' in the Watchmaker. Yeah, its easy if you just place your mouse cursor out over the steps up or down a bit and click, but trying to find that hotspot with the arrow keys means a lot of stepping in the same place for a long time and wearing a hole in the top or bottom of the stairs...sheesh!
Also, in Amerzone, trying to find the right place to toss the hook and winch from the boat to be able to advance down that stream (or whatever it is) just about drove me crazy and bald.
Oh, yes, then there is the 'tea making machine' in Temujin you have to build....finding just the right spot to put a piece or two drove me to look for another bottle of wine (for real, not in the game)....AND then finding that hotspot to 'richochet' that pellet or whatever from the gong to the antique helmet to chip off a piece, jiminy crickets!
I am sure there are lots more the the old Senior Moments syndrome comes in handy now and then...

I'd have to vote for the Globe Puzzle in the Journeyman Project Turbo. Not only was it a pixel hunt but it was using a darn track ball to control the mouse movements to find pixels and to make it even more fun was the whole sequence was timed. I can't remember how many times I had to restart the game to get this puzle completed. I mean I loved this game, ironically my first computer adventure, and have played numerous times but this puzzle gets me every time. I mean I use my left (non mouse hand) to hold my right arm steady everytime I get to this puzzle to avoid slip ups.

hope this helps,
Brian

Crystal Key, the wall plate and tool to open it. I had the devil of a time finding that switch on the electric screwdriver thingy! Actually, the entire game seemed "pixely" to me. Very muddy and hard to find things (places).

But I perservered and look back on it as an ok game. smile
