Okay, my local book/media store has the game (jewel case version) for $9.99. It looked good but I thought I'd check here first. Adventure games don't exactly walk off the shelves here, to my great delight.

So those of you who have played it, what do you think? I haven't played the first three (mostly because I haven't looked for any).

Your opinions are respectfully requested!

Marion,

I bought Alone in the Dark 4 for the same bargain $9.99. It is a 3rd person (this means we watch the characters move around rather than seeing the world from their eyes) adventure that uses the arrow keys to move you around. The graphics and sound are nice. There is one major caution for you. The game requires an OpenGL compliant video card. I have a super nVidia GeForce MX420 that handles it well, but I've heard from many whom say it won't run. Here is the list of "supported" cards from the readme file:

- Nvidia GeForce 256 Reference
- Nvidia GeForce 3
- ATI Rage Fury
- ATI Rage Fury Maxx
- ATI Radeon
- Diamond Viper II
- Diamond Stealth III S540
- Matrox Millennium G400 DualHead
- Matrox Millennium G400
- Matrox G450
- Creative Annihilator Pro
- 3Dfx Voodoo 5 5500

There are others that will work with less than full functionality...

I have only played a few of the opening moments. There are several decent walkthroughs available.

Hope this helps you!

Dadguy

Okay, at the risk of sounding ignorant...I have no idea what kind of video card I have. I have XP for an operating system. Where do I look to find that info on my computer?

Please don't tell anybody I'm this dumb! lol

Just right click anywhere on a empty space of your desktop. Select setting's...select advanced...select adapter. Beside adapter type is your video card.

Okay, did that.

There was no option labeled "Settings". It did give me a choice of "Graphics Options" which then gave me "Graphics Controller" - which then gave me "Graphics Properties" which gave me a menu entitled "Intel(R) 82845G/GL Graphics Controller" with several options. Okey dokey.

Now what?

Marion, now that you know whether or not you can run it, you may still want to know if you'll WANT to! laugh

The Alone in the Dark games are by no means pure adventures. They belong to a (sub)genre called Survival Horror... which pretty much means what it says. You'll be trying to solve an "adventure", sure, but in a spooky environment where lots of creepy crawlies try to kill you. You'll do some gunning, some running for your life, and probably a reasonable amount of dying wink

Good games, but you'll have to decide for yourself if you think it'll appeal to you.

2-Cents. I never liked any of the AITD games. Even at $9.99, it may not be a bargain.

For whom the games toll.
They toll for thee.

Looks like you found your video controller. It's not a card but a Intel controller build on-board the mother board. These controllers are limited and usually use the memory ram instead of having it's own dedicated ram. You could benefit from a new up-to-date video card.

Whoa...I can kill things? Cool!

My son is pretty good at it and has already volunteered his help. (killing things)

Call me weak, I went back and bought it.

I probably should have mentioned the agonizing lack of ammo, then, Marion. whistle (that's where the "survival" part comes from).

No, it's definitely worth a play. AT $10, how can you go wrong? laugh laugh

I enjoyed AITD4, but Im also a BIG "Survival Horror" fan, I love the Resident Evil games, if you dont mind a little action you'll enjoy this game, I personally thought the action wasnt very hard, once you got the hang of the controls, but then again the Resident Evil games are pretty hard so AITD4 seemed kind of easy to me. wave

Thanks for your input! This computer is only six months old and I need to upgrade the video so I can play an old game? Everything else runs great (except when I have to rein it back a bit for some of the older games).

Well if I don't like it, there's always my GTZ list waiting.
