Debra, you can find some nice maps at this site:

http://gothic.rpgdot.com/index.php

There is also a walkthrough and forums that were a great help for me. I don't remember what walkthrough I used, but will see if I can find it. This game is not easy in the beginning because you are so weak and don't know your way around, but I very quickly came to love it.

I believe I used the walkthrough by JCukier at Gamefaqs.com when I needed help. There are also maps located there.

Here are several

http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/game/3360.html

Plus there are cheats if you really get into a bind that can be found at Gamefaqs as well

I'm using this one:
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~airyn/gothic/
It's helping me a lot.
There's also:
http://www.gamesover.com/walkthroughs/gothic.txt
but I don't know how good it is.
And I hope this is not spoiler but "Graham" sells maps at the old camp.

Hugh, thanks for the two great WT's. I like these better than the one I found.
I have version 1.08 and I can't get the cheats to work. I looked in the .ini file and there's no test mode listed. Anyone used the cheats?
Pokey, thanks for the maps. That helps! <img border="0" alt="bravo" title="" src="graemlins/bravo.gif " />
Looks like RPG.com has lots of good stuff for this game.
Oldman, I copied the 127 page WT from gamefaqs, but I think it's more than I wanted to know.

Debra, I did use the cheats once to get through a cave gate after I pulled a lever too soon. I did it by typing "marvin". Be careful of the levers--sometimes they won't work if you pull them too soon. Allow a short pause between CTRL and the UP arrow. I don't know what version I have. It came in the small box and didn't include a manual. I don't think you will need cheats, but you can get a lot of help from the forums.

Maps can be bought near the Old Camp entrance.

The trick is to save often and play it like an adventure in the first few hours. Avoid fights, solve quests, do adventure things.
Remember the setting: a male prison. Finding out how far you can go, who backs down and who wants to see your cards is one of the game

Good advice. I'm too weak and have no armor and can't seem to find the guy who sells some. Probably don't have enough ore anyway.

At the beginning of the game I found it very useful to increase dexterity and get the lockpicking skill in order to steal as much as possible for some armour. Also, one-handed sword skill is a good investment right off the bat. You'll have lots of opportunity and skill points to develop other skills in the game later on.

When you get an opportunity to travel somewhere else with a guide, take it, because they will do the killing while you check out the scenery, and you still get the experience points.

There's a few quests in the Old Camp that don't require you to be a powerhouse. Don't go exploring right off the bat because one Bloodfly can do you in, and there's much worse than that out there!

I think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Why does it stay dark so long especially when there's no place to sleep? If I try to move between camps in the dark I die.

Are you still in the old camp? You can sleep in a hut near the arena. If you are in the new camp, you can use Shrike's hut, even though he complains.

In the old camp, You can also ask the guy named "GUY" for huts to use.
