I have a cdrw drive as well as a regular cd drive. I use my burner only for my craft patterns and sometimes I will play a game with it if I have something in the reg drive. Anyway! I cannot get the cdrw drive to respond.! It will after a while of messing with it but it uysed to jump right in. I checked the cables, and wires but they are all tight I even unplugged them and repluged them in.! I have no clue what could be wrong. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thank you
Kelly

It may need cleaning.
Or it may be on the way out.
I'd try cleaning it first.

Do you hear it trying to spin up a lot before accessing the CD? I've had a couple of old drives where the motor just wore out and they couldn't get up to speed anymore - so they couldn't read.

Does every CD cause the problem?

Does it try to spin up at all when you put a CD in it?

If the problem is with the drivers, removing the CD drive listing from Device Manager and rebooting the computer to let the computer redetect it usually clears the problem up.

But if the motor is worn out and it can't get up to speed, or if the laser is out of alignment and won't read, you'll probably have to replace the drive.

Thank You Jenny100, I will try to remove it from the device manager. I just got it about 4 months ago.! and I have only used it a few times burning my craft patterns.! and a few music cds.!
I also found 2 more things in the device manager!
I have exclamation points on PCI Ethernet Controller and Wave Device for Voice Modem.!
Maybe those are causing a conflict as well>!
ThanK you so much for all your help.!!

Ok, I just removed it from Device manger adn turned off computer. Then I unhooked all the cables to the cdrw drive.!
I restarted computer and checked device manager, and it shows the cdrw drive.! and it did not go thru the add new hardware program.!

I clicked on add new hardware, and it showed 2 things to be added. The PCI Ethernet Controller and Wave Device for Voice Modem.!

That's strange. Were they not installed before?

Is your CDRW drive working any better?

No it is still not working correctly. I cannot figure out anything. !
I did everything you said, BUT it never came up and said anything about new hardware or anything when it booted up.!

It tries to spin when I double click on the drive, then it comes up with
E: is not accessible, device is not rready , after a few times it will come up with the message in a few messages earlier!

I am so frustrated, I cannot imagine how to fix this!

I think you're going to have to replace it.
It sounds to me like the drive is worn out.

One other thing you could check is whether the IDE ribbon cable might have come loose from the drive - or from the motherboard. Unless you've been moving the computer around, it's sort of unlikely that the cable would have jarred loose, but it's still a possibility. You could also check the power cable, but if the light on front of the drive lights up, it isn't likely to be a power problem.

I had a drive that lasted only 2 months before going kaput. It was under warranty and the store replaced it with the same model drive. The replacement drive lasted only 2 weeks. frown Some drives are just not made very well and don't last.

The store agreed to give me part credit off the price of a different model drive, which was more expensive but which still works more than 3 years later.

I wish you luck with the tech support. If nothing else, they may offer you a new drive.

Kellee..........

Didn't you say you removed the cables after removing the drive from the Device Manager. If there are no cables to it then I would think Windows didn't see it (the CDRW) upon re-booting.

Some years ago I bought a CD RW (my first). It was only a 1X/2X and would only work occasionally. Finally, after a month of thinking that maybe I didn't know what I was doing with it, I took it back. Turned out to be a bad CD RWer so they sent it back and sent me a new one that DID work. Still, it took forever to copy anything, of course, because it was so slow. Recently bought a 52, 24, 52 that does in 7 minutes what the old one did in a half hour or more. NICE!! laugh

I didn't do it......and if I did I'm not guilty!
