this is a quote from Soren A

Quote:

Inferno's list of older games that she got to play on XP includes Temujin, but I am unsuccessful at this, even when using the compatibility function. I get a flash of the Video Reality game engine logo, then the screen reverts to the launch screen. Tried 3-4 ways to launch game, all with the same results. Any suggestions? Works fine on my 98.

Soren A
Hi Soren ... I moved your post and created a new topic for you. smile Temujin does not have an issue with Windows XP ...but does have a few with various combinations of Video Cards. Without listing exactly what your error messages are and your Computer Specs, it's difficult to be of help.

Inferno: Thanx for reply. Thinking about post some time afterward i realized I should have given basic specs. Puter is Dell 8200, 256 RDRAM, 64 MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX graphics card, 80 GB hard drive, SB Live 1024 sound card. Pretty close to what you give for your puter.

Pentium 4 1.8 GHZ processor.

No error msgs. None. Just the VR logo, small start of blue activity line on bottom of logo, then revert to launch screen and no more activity. Lately no blue line activity, just a quick logo flash.

Tried launching from Start>Run, directly from CD, from two different CDROM units, temujin.exe, launch32.exe, with and without compatibility, the latter with 95 and 98, just about all combinations of the foregoing. Results the same each time, just the logo flash.

Which Windows XP version do you have? Which Sevice Pack do you have for NT? (You need to have at least Service Pack 2 ...I have Service Pack 5)
You can find this out by right clicking on any
.exe program and choose Properties-->Compatibility-->Compatibility Mode-->Check the first box and click on the downward arrow. Your OS Compatibilities will be listed there-->look for Windows NT. Mine says "Windows NT4 (Service Pack 5) as I mentioned... you'll need at least Service pack 2.

You'll also need a minimum of 2Mb of VRAM so make sure your pageing file is at least this or larger. Set your system to Best Performance for Programs.

Set you Display to 16bit color before you put in the CD. You don't have to install Temujin, it will run off the CD. Right Click on the Temujin.exe file and go to Properties-->Compatibility-->Compatibility Mode-->Choose WINT4 (Service Pack5)and also check-->Display Setting-->Disable Visual Themes-->Input Settings-->Turn off text services for this program. Click Apply-->Click OK. Either left click on the .exe file or Reinsert the the cd into your CDROM and click on Play at the auto mode.

Saving looks a little wierd but works just find. When you try to save. at the top box write the name of you save here. My text seemed to be encrypted... but after closing out of the program and then restarting it up my saved game was there.

You can also assign it to run in a "window" instead of full screen. While at the "play" / :cancel" splash screen ...hit the "w" key. When you click on Play...you'll play the game in a smaller window.

There also may be some issues with sound at certain places. If you experience this, exit the game and Go to DXDIAG--> and disable Direct Sound. I didn't. So far.

Inferno: Tnx again for your info.
1. My puter says I have XP HE v5.1.26, I have Service Pack 1 that I updated last Sept. I would download SP 2 if I could find it in the many places that I have looked in the myriad places that MS offers.
2. Following your steps for comatibility it says NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5). I am at a loss about this; I have never had anything to do with Win NT ever. Nevertheless, going thru the steps you gave I get the same results, a quick flash of the Virtual Reality engine logo and a return to whatever screen that I started from.
3. Autostart is not enabled on my puter. Another thing for which I have searched, how to turn it on and off. I am sure that it is available somewhere, but I can't find it. I have looked several times, but I get lost in the termiology.
4. An example of the latter is VRAM and pageing file that you mention.
5. Saving, sound issues, and window size are not problems at this time since I don't get that far. What is a splash screen?

A splash screen is the first screen you see when the game starts. Usually it has a logo of the company that made or published the game.

THe service pack is for the above mentioned OS "NT" not XP. And you seem to have exactly the same as I do. So, that is not the issue.

There is something else either incompatible or conflicting here. Lower your video excelleration, notch by notch (restart inbetween) and let me know what happens.

Inferno: Spent the last 45 minutes lowering the video acceleration notch by notch from right to left and rebooting between each step, trying temujin.exe and launch32.exe, compatiblity off and on each time. Tried your NT4 suggestion a couple times. Results always the same, just the Virtual Reality engine logo flash as before.

Confused about Service Pack 2. When it was offered a while ago it seemed to me that it did not apply to my puter usage so I declined the download. Was that a mistake? Did your statement that it was needed apply just to NT 4? If I do need it, where can I find it? I have looked.

Jenny: is the splash screen the thing you skip using the Esc key after the initial viewing?

No....you have the right Service pack for Windows XP... Service Pack 1. The Service pack I was referring to is for Winnt4 Service pack 5 this what you have (so do I) it's more than ample. That's not the issue here. I apologize for making that clearer. smile

The Read me file says you need at least a 2 for Winnt to perform and you have that. You'll also need to have your display set to 16bit color.

So Let me ask you something. Have you tried it with VDMSound?

Does VDMSound work with Windows games?
Temujin was made for Win 95 and later, not DOS.

Well, I have a VDMSound-2.0.4-WinNT-i386.msi file in my download folder that I got 9 months ago in an attempt to solve a fast panning problem with Zork Nemesis (didn't help). I found a VDM web site that was pretty much over my head, tho it seemed to imply that VDM was for DOS. Mention of alpha and beta versions. However, there was an explicit statement that it would work on XP. Above filename implies Win NT.

Should I do anything with this file, and if so, what?

Yes it is primarily for Dos but I've used it as well for some games that run in Windows 95. Remember it primarily a sound emulator (fakes Soundblaster) The new Jack the Ripper is not a DOS game but will run with VDMSOUND as well on XP
"GO FIGURE". Anyway, it's only a suggestion.

WIndows XP is built on the NTFS kernel and not FAT system (Windows 95 - 98 - 98SE) It is very close to WINNT.

I think you mean that Windows XP is built on the NT kernel. NTFS and FAT are file systems and Windows XP can use both of them.

VDMSound is a DOS sound emulator. It SHOULDN'T work with Windows programs. In order for VDMSound to work on a program, the program has to be running in XP's DOS emulator (NTVDM). Windows programs can't run in NTVDM.

I've been following this thread and have to say I've been at a total loss. I can't do anything to make Temujin NOT work. I've tried it on 3 different computers running XP and it works perfectly every time. Didn't have to use any compatability options or anything...just double clicked on Temujin.exe

Have you tried the game on a different computer to make sure that it's not a problem with the CD?

Just to clear up any confusion about service packs, Service Pack 2 for Windows XP has not been released yet. It is still in beta for the time being. It should be released, unless Microsoft pushes back the release date, later this year.

Krkdnose-Here is a line from the VDM Home Page, for what it might be worth:
"VDMSound works on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. For Windows 95, 98 or Me support, see this!"...The game runs, tho not perfectly, on my creaky Win 98 puter; the problems are with the 98, not the disks.

Running the pgm I reference above, puter told me I have VDMSound 2.0.4 now installed, tho I don't know where. In any event, results are the same disapointment.

Do you suppose there might be some sort of conflict with DirectX?

Thanx to all the interest and inputs! Are there any further suggestions?

Isn't that for running VDMSound on a Windows 95/98/ME computer instead of for running a Win 95/98 game on a Win 2000/XP computer using VDMSound?

Yes, that's exactly right.
