I keep getting dumped back to my desktop after I escape from the cabin in chapter 3 of Runaway. I downloaded the patch recommended in an earlier GB thread, but there are no instructions about where to install that patch once you've downloaded it. Does anyone know where that patch belongs??
Or what else to do to avaoid getting dumped like that?
Thanks.

the same thing happened to me in chapter 5, i couldn't find a patch though, aand some of the guys here sent me their saved games. you'll miss a little bit of the game, though.
if you do find out how to use those patches, i'd like to know though...

have you unzipped it? theres often a .txt file which tells you where to put it.

Usually you put the patch in the game folder.
With some patches, all you have to do is unzip them into the game folder and they automatically replace the old files with the patched ones.
With some patches, the patch is an exe that you have to run from within the game folder.
With some patches, the patch exe will find your game folder (or let you browse to it) even if you don't put the patch in the game folder.
Sometimes the patch exe and a readme file are zipped together, sometimes not.

Thanks, but if it were an ordinary .zip file, I would have known what to do with it. It's an .RAR file, probably specific to Runaway. But there are no other .RAR files to be found in Runaway and there are several game folders, so I don't know which one to put it in. I suppose I could try them all and see what happens, but that might involve opening the game several times with disk 1, swapping to disk 2 to open the saved game in ch. 3, then crashing to the desktop heaven only knows how many times...Not my idea of fun.
I was hoping someone had tried this already or knew of a link explaining this really unusual patch.
Thanks.

.rar files are .zip files compressed with a different, slightly more efficient algorithm. They can be decompressed using WinRar or newer versions of WinZip, among others.

If either of those programs is installed, you should be able to open the .rar file as if it were a zip, by double clicking it, or by opening it from within WinRar or WinZip.

There's usually a readme within the rar file with instructions for how to install the patch. You'll want to read it.

Thanks for that info! I've been using a really old version of WinZip that didn't recognize this file. I'll try a newer version and see what happens. Are these free downloads?

Thanks. I just tried it and it doesn't seem to recognize the rar file.
Tried another free zip utility at download.com, it unzipped the thing just fine, but I still got dumped back to the desktop at the same point in Runaway. This reminds me back of the old days of computer games where the biggest puzzle was usually getting the thing to run.

What was in the file after you unzipped it?
There may be another file you have to run to install the patch after you unzip the rar file. Also, I don't know if you have to restart the game from the previous chapter to have it take effect. Was there a readme in the patch that explained this?

Thanks for all this input. No time to try any of it today or tomorrow.
Got to get to work!
