Hi,
Took some advice and bought Sherlock Holmes the Rose Tattoo - running Windows 2000 - Click on Install and sounds works fine (for 2 seconds) - wanders off into DOS and says I can't play due to sound.
Downloaded the VDM Sound and still no luck - three hours later and getting pretty %^&*($#@ and ready to re-sell already.
Can someone help I would actually like to play this game = sometime this century would be nice !!!!!!
Thanks in advance
Can't find a patch anywhere........
very frustrated old time gamer - but losing faith fast)

You might check Inferno's instructions for XP about getting it to work with VDMSound.
The Rose Tattoo

You might also consider running it with DOSBox .

The secret is to use the .bat file as the .exe and run it with VDMSound.

Oh Joy - Thanks Tuesday Next...I'll be calling you.

Thanks Jenny - but I am running Windows 2000 so I do not get the Properties box you mention when right hand clicking the autorun.exe file - any suggestions?

Inferno - Excuse my ignorance - I am a complete DOS novice and live upside down.

I have no idea once I have downloaded VDMSOUND and VESA Driver where to go from there or how to set things up.

Getting really confused

woozy

Jenny,
Is there a stand DOSBOX system and code to follow or do they all differ?
I mean I know that the start up has to be the game name/code etc but all the rest of the info that you have to change in notepad does that alter from game to game?
I made GK1 start thru Dosbox so I have at least got one under my belt - sort off.
Cheers and thanks in advance

You may have to tweak DOSBox to get some games to work. Some are more fussy than others.

Hi jada!

I'm currently playing Rose Tattoo on my XP SP1 machine with no problems.

I did a install following a normal auto play launch and the game installed beautifully. I changed the compatibility on the HOLMES2 (MS-DOS Batch File) to 95, and the game runs really smoothly.

I didn't need DOSDOX or VDM sound.

Good Luck.

Hi Qadventuregames,
Thanks very much - XP and 2000 share the same type of system so that should work - can you tell me how you did that?
I can't seem to find where to change that and I really am not DOS experienced at all.
When I click it to start it goes straight to the DOS screen and I have to select the sound, although the sound works perfectly for 30 seconds when it opens)I have tried them all and they are nor working.
Thanks for your time.
Cheers

Hi jada,

I'm assuming that you had a successful install, at which time you set up your sound (midi and digital).

I have used DOS, 95, 98, 98SE, ME and XP - but never 2000, so I do not know if you can select compatibility on 2000. I can only tell you what I did on XP.

  • 1.Find where your computer displays your Local Disk usually (C:); right click and select Open.
2.You should find a file folder called HOLMES2; right click and select Open.
    3. You should see a file called HOLMES2 (MS-DOS Batch file); right click and select Properties.
    4. There will be a tab called "compatibility"; click on it.
    5. You will see an option called "compatibility mode"; check Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 95. Then click OK. That's it.
    6. I launch the game from the HOLMES2 (MS-DOS) file); right click and select Open.

I don't know if this will work with 2000, so I wish you luck

Windows 2000 compatibility mode has to be enabled. You won't see it by default.

Unfortunately if you use the .exe file to run your game ... you will find that it will crash when you have to use the "hatpin"
