I loaded up this game tonight. The last time I played it was around 1995 (when the game first came out). Anyway....this game is even better than I remembered!! It's WONDERFUL!! I'm sure that many of you here have played the game, but this post is mainly for those of you who HAVEN'T played this game. If you like first-person puzzling (there's a story too, and it's quite an interesting one) in an unusual and beautiful and spooky setting, I know you will love this game, too. There's no excuse not to play it. It can be found on both eBay and Amazon Marketplace for amounts of money that aren't outrageous (anywhere from around seven dollars to twenty dollars). And it also runs on XP in Windows 95 compatibility mode (just be sure to say NO when the screen comes up asking if you want to test your system to see if it will run--this is important). Just continue on with installing the game after that, and it will run just fine! It doesn't come across as dated AT ALL, by the way, unlike some older games. The game is still a feast for the eyes. In fact, I will go so far as to say that it's my number-one first-person puzzler still, after all these years. It's SO much fun!! I hope some of you will be encouraged to buy this game and play it. I really don't want anyone to miss out on this marvelous game.

Geo I think that was Shivers 2 - you collected Bahos sticks and had to go through the canyon with the drawings on it. In Shivers you were in a museum collecting Ixupi Marian I love this game. I was most proud of the notes I made. Used graph paper and colored pencils - they were a work of art Shivers was one of the very first games I ever played - As a matter of fact, I think it was number two - I played Myst first.

I have it on my 2007 list. I don't generally lean toward first person, or puzzle type games, but it really was superb.

Shivers is my all time favorite game. I gave it away several years ago because it wouldn't run on my Win 95 computer. (Dumb dumb dumb) Then I got an XP computer and found out it would play on that so I found a copy on Amazon and bought it.
Shivers was the second game I played. The first was The Dig...another great game!
I child-proofed my home... but they're still getting in!

I think this game, Shivers 2, along with Zork: Nemesis, started my interest in adventuregames, also I have just one grief: I never could finish the safe puzzle in Shivers 2, even with help from the wonderfull walkthru from this site... Ah well..

shivers is a great game I played it a while ago, and my daughter had to do the ending... if I remember correctly the baha sticks had to be placed at some kind of an altar and it was timed... not my kind of an ending!!! And it had to do with a band? if I can remember correctly, I think

It's great to hear so many people have enjoyed this game; I'm hoping this thread will also encourage some people new to the game to give it a go! Shivers 1 (the one I am referring to) takes place in a very interesting (and colorful!!) museum. The second one is the one that takes place in the desert town and involves the bahos/symbols. You know what else I liked about Shivers? The fact that the manual actually EXPLAINS the objective of quite a few of the puzzles. Maybe I'm just a little dimwitted, but there are times with puzzles that I don't understand what I am supposed to be doing (okay, MANY times!) You might think this would have spoiled the puzzle or made it a lot easier, but I didn't find that to be the case. What really amazed me last night is how polished this game seems. Sometimes a fond recollection of an older game, after having played so many newer ones, gets tarnished after giving it another try years later. That is definitely not the case with this one. I love the narrator's voice and the commentary during the exhibits, too, as well as the video clips. This game just showed so much....creativity! Syd, I like the sound of that graph paper! And Nickie, I don't generally enjoy that many first-person puzzlers either, but this one was definitely different. I really wouldn't have mentioned this game here if it were one of those that's impossible to find now, but happily that is not the case, and you don't have to give up food for the month to pay for it, either.

I've heard this game mentioned many times, but assumed that as it was a fairly old game it wouldn't play on XP without a lot of tweaking. I'm glad to read that's not the case. Think I'll keep a lookout for this one. Thanks for the recommendation, Marian!

All this talk about Shivers makes me want to go and dig out my copy and play again. I'm with Syd: my first game was Myst and the next was Shivers. What a great way to start many years of adventure game playing!

I've played it twice and II once. Want to go back and play II again sometime.
The Dig was a great game. I wonder if it will play on XP?

Your mention of Shivers re-kindled my interest, so I 'dug' out that big ol' box, dusted it off & put it in the lineup of games to play (still had my receipt for $9.99 from CompUSA, October 1997). I can't even remember the game environment, but I do know I didn't finish it. Was I too scared?... did it glitch up on me?... was I simply too dumb? I guess I'll find out when I play it again (it'll be like playing a brand new game... yippee!). The big, 8½ x 10½ inch box came with a very informative, 96-page booklet, complete with Walkthrough. On its back cover is the announcement for the upcoming sequel, Shivers II, coming in Spring 1997, followed by this teaser: "It seemed like a friendly town at first. At least that's why Mike and my friends had picked Cyclone as the backdrop for their rock video. But by the time I arrived on the scene, things got strange. Not one person would tell me where they were. My only clues led to the cave dwellings out in the desert. I know I had to find them. My mind raced as I drove to the caves.
I swallowed hard as I entered the forboding darkness. I had only taken two steps when the wailing echos deafened me. The walls closed in on me from all directions....." Don't think I got that sequel, but it sure looks good! Marian, for the reminder about how good Shivers was (and is).

You're very welcome, Carrie. I had pretty much forgotten about the game myself until I came across it the other night and loaded it up, and then the memories of how much fun I had with it came flooding back. The manual is great, isn't? They rarely make manuals like that anymore. You shouldn't have too much trouble tracking down Shivers 2, if you ever decide to give it a go.

I read in a review in adventurelantern that Shivers II runs rather well on WinXP, especially if you played it in winNT compability mode which I did for some time. As I have Shivers 2, but alas, not Shivers 1...

All this talk made me go dig out my copy of Shivers 1. It installed flawlessly on my XP without compatability mode. Just make sure that the game doesn't automatically check the specs when you're installing. Now I just have to see if I can get it play on full screen.

Hi, Rushes!
You can only carry one pot or lid with you at a time, but as I located other pots and lids, I made a list of where they were so I could retrieve them easily when I found their mates. As I matched them up and captured the corresponding Ixupis, I moved the pots and lids in the farthest parts of the museum to the areas closer to the main lobby so I wouldn't have to travel so far.

When I installed it with Program Compatibility it looked great (although small)but it wouldn't run. I think I will try something else and then try it on my old faithful 98. Marion

That's a tough question, Becky. The two games are so dissimilar in look and atmosphere. Shivers is VERY colorful, artistically, which is actually one of the things I liked about it, and yet it maintains a consistently spooky feel to it. Lots of puzzling involved, and a very nonlinear game. That's another thing about the game that I found appealing, as, if you are stuck on something, you can just move on to something else. And I realize I haven't answered your question. For me, the words "terror" and "horror" don't apply to Shivers. It's just....quietly unsettling throughout. I've never played anything quite like it.

The first time I played Shivers I, I remember being startled and jumped in one place. Don't remember where. I gotta play Shivers II again.

I loved Shivers also, but not the second one so much, it was just ok. I played this on Windows ME and couldn't get it to play full screen. I did load and test it on XP, then sold it to a friend. Recently I purchased another Shivers as I thought I might want to give it a replay. When I installed it on my XP puter, I did not use compatibility mode and since it wouldn't go full screen, I just changed my background to solid black. The distraction of ones wallpaper and icons is not a good background for this game.

..... I just changed my background to solid black..... That's a good idea. Have you tried what Marian suggested? I've got the game running in 256 colors and 640 x 480?, I believe, full screen, and the graphics look very good. Not to worry about it looking pixellated or grainy--it looks very nice.

Ah, what delicious memories! And I know just what you mean by jumping or being startled and I can remember 2 places in Shivers 1 - crossing the lake in the beginning and in a dark hallway (between the walls) inside the mansion, a sight which made me almost jump out of my chair! Loved this game. Must pull it out and try it on my XP. Thanks for the 'memories'. Love, Betty Lou

Thanks for the help Dear Boomer friends but,due to a personal emergency I will have to be away from home with my computers and Shivers left behind. I did bring Barrow Hill, Darkfall, and SyberiaII with me. I am using a laptop for the first time in my life.(Strange). The typing is hard. I will retry Shivers when I get home. I kept my 98 because, when I got XP 98 was so old it wasn't worth anything. Marion

Carrie The lowest setting my computer can set the size to is 600 x 800, the color has a choice of only 16 or 32 bit. I haven't tried it on this one yet anyway, it was a different XP computer with a different monitor. I may just go and install on that one instead.

Yes it will play on XP, but may be easier to install on some computers than others. I know it installed easily on my computer that was very basic, but had XP Pro. But, when we formatted the hard drive, we did it in Fat32, not NTFS. That computer I recently reformatted again, this time in NTFS. Anyway, tonight I installed Shivers on my computer with all the higher end stuff and it wasn't that easy. I have two DVD drives, no Cd and it did not like one of them at all. It finally installed in the other, just remember do not click the test part, cause unless you have an old computer, it will fail. Shivers/Sierra does not like new. I set my resolution to the lowest setting I have, screen was a decent size on my 19" monitor and set the color to black. I started the game and it played fine, though I didn't continue it.

Ellimay, I mentioned a page or two ago that I've installed Shivers on XP, no problem. Others have also, but make sure, like "Hawk" mentioned, NOT to say "okay" to let the game check your machine for specs. My machine is about 4 years old, with XP Home Edition. Only problem is that it plays in a "box", rather than full screen.
The answer is....chocolate! Who cares what the question is.....

Can someone tell me where to find the Gameboomers walkthrough for Shivers? I hunted Search and so far am not finding it. I did find Rae's set up, which I did not know I would need, so I will be using that. I recieved my game today and look forward to playing it. McG- The game is on my computer, thanks to a wonderful Boomer. Thanks Maggie

Becky- Yes, I have printed both of them for me. I have probably missed a lot of games, this one sounds so good. I have it on, but have not had the time yet to start it. The weekends my husband and I are always so busy doing this and that. Thanks so much Maggie

I've found a few copies on eBay.See what happens.Riddle Of The Sphinx was my first adventure game.Excited about this one! I love games with a horror theme!! Now, if I could only get Mystery Of The Nautilus to run on XP..
