Hi all,
As promised,here is the thread for this years top 13 Dark Side recommendations.
The object for any boomers in the dark is to recommend to other boomers non-adventure games that you believe worthy of playing in this day and age. Plenty of people venture over here and don't know what to play, me included. The games may be your all time favourites, but they need not be. I loved Quake at the time and I still think of it highly but I wouldn't recommend it today.
We then compile a final list as a resource for other players.
The rules are fairly simple.

1. You can recommend a maximum of 13 games, but you can recommend less.
2. You can't list a series, unless you use single votes for each game.
3. Expansion packs will be considered seperate games, on the basis that the original might be ordinary but an expansion pack superb.
4. Any game that is not pure adventure can be listed, irrespective of genre.
5. You don't have to indicate the type or genre, and you are not limited to any specific number of games in any genre. Go ahead and list 13 rpg's if you choose.
6. It is essentially a pc list, but given that many players have consoles as well, if you want to list games for the console go right ahead.

Please use full titles where possible as I am not as familiar with titles and series over here as I am with the light side games. Add ons and expansions might confuse me but I will shout if clarification is needed.
We will keep the list open for about 2 weeks and with help from a mucky the list will also be categorised for genre, at least down to those with multiple recommendations.
I will post later - Oblivion is still a work in progress!

Whew! Once again, there were many more competing for my consideration.

John, I haven't played Betrayal in Antara yet (I have it right here), but it would appear that getting it to behave in Windows XP is problematic. Have you run the game with Windows XP?

I have an older PC with win 98 loaded to play older games so I haven't tried Antara on XP. (In fact I haven't played it in years). However, the expert on XP compatibility (metzomagic) just posted above so maybe he'll see this post and give us a hint.

Hmm. Betrayal in Antara. Don't have it myself, so hard to tell. Released in 1997, that means Compatibility Mode for Win 95 ought to do it in XP, else you're outta luck...

The hardest games to get running in XP are the ones made between 1996 and 2000. They were all striving to get the most performance they could out of Win 95/98, broke a lot of the unwritten Win 32 API rules, and so... luck of the dice roll with these ones, really.

Edit: just checked on www.ntcompatible.com. Looks like it will run in XP but that you need to have your screen resolution set to 640 x 480 and also use a PC slowdown progam like Turbo or else the game crashes often in combat.

This has been the main game that I have been playing this couple of months, so that says a lot.

Morrowind leads the way narrowly from Divine Divinity. Games with 5 or more include Gothic 1 and 2, Baldurs Gate 2, KOTOR 1, Fable and Neverwinter Nights.
About 110 games mentioned, including a whole heap I have never heard of.
Suprises? Perhaps Outcast with only 2 votes so far. I am sure there are others.

We seem to be drawing to a close so I will post final results Monday morning my time, which gives you about 36 hours if you still want to vote.
I will categorise using last years list and my own humble knowledge and research. I will leave any I don't know and maybe a mucky can fill them in.
I am seeking feedback on one thing.
At this stage I intend to count Sacred and Sacred Plus as one game, and Sacred Gold as a seperate game, given it contains the expansion Underworld. However I could be convinced Sacred Plus is different enough to be a seperate game. I haven't played them, but research suggests that it had some quests added and a few more foes, plus all the patches. Not sure that patches add enough, but perhaps the extra bits make it different enough to be considered a game in its own right?
Let me know what you think.

What are you asking, Flotsam? Sacred and Sacred Plus are identical, except that quests were corrected (they were buggy in Sacred) and just a small bit of content added. Sacred Plus was originally a free download for those who had bought Sacred, so they could play the game as it was meant to be played. When the game did well with the corrections made, it was then re-released in boxed form for retail, this time as Sacred Plus. The next release was the expansion Underworld, and then the final release was the Gold at a more economical price. When you installed the expansion, it also let you play the original game with two new characters. Did that help or not?

That answers the question Nickie. Something I read said Plus added more quests, but I will count them as 1 game as originally intended.

Oh, I can see why it would be easy to be confused, because it does look that way. What I think it did though, was add in the quests that originally were SUPPOSED to be there, but weren't in the original. Or they were there sometimes, or you couldn't actually complete them...etc. I don't think it made it enough different for it to be two games, but whatever you want to do is great with me Flotsam. I'm just tickled pink it isn't me counting!

When I look at the list it is interesting that among the first 10 games is older games such as BG2, Gothic, Neverwinter Nights,
Knights of the Old Republic. And of course, Morrowind as the best darkside game of (near) all times.

Somehow three (3) Bioware games made it into the top ten.
How did that happen ?
They must be doing something properly, those Canadians...
