Wow!

I'm impressed with the list for Nintendo ! And since I'm shopping tomorrow ,I may just take another look at those and the games available on shelf - I was very tempted with Narnia...
will let you know ,point is - it's nice to be able to choose. And I know some would play adventure games if they were able to get them for the console they have.
People have to buy adventure games, no matter the platform ,to make them worth producing .

Niteowl, I'm impressed with the DS list too.

I don't think it needs to be either/or--The more the merrier puppy

My son played the Syberia's on Xbox, I played them on puter. We both loved it. He could not have played it on the puter--didn't have one that would run it. I did not have an Xbox at the time, but I bought one because I figured that some games are better on the consoles and some are better on the puter, and heck, I'm in my second childhood while I can still sort of afford it, so why not!

Hi smile

You know what this discussion is starting to sound like?
- It's a fact that most people prefer ginger cookies. Why do cookie manufacturers even bother to make other kinds of cookies?
- But I like chocolate chip cookies too!
- Well, I don't, so manufacturers should stop making them and only make ginger cookies. I will not buy any cookies from any manufacturer that makes anything else besides ginger cookies.

I can't agree with this statement. It implies such selfishness.
Most of us would surely be very happy that people could play Adventure games on any number of different systems as long as these systems don't replace the PC.

I know I would yes

Cheers.

Unfortunately that is exactly what some people in this thread seem to want Mad, they say there should NOT be any adventure on any platform other than PC. That's what triggered my analogy. I know many people don't mind multi-platform releases, but some do. And I don't understand why. Different people, different tastes.

Some adventure games for Nintendo DS use the features of that console (e.g microphone to blow in, touch screen, two screens at the same time) so they would never work on a PC. They work fine on a Nintendo DS which they were specifically designed for, but since they're not released for PC, they shouldn't exist at all, according to some people. That is selfish.

chrissie, I have most of these as well and indeed not all were released in the NTSC-region. However TLC asked about the PSP, the PlayStation Portable. wink I don't think any adventure other than Myst was released for it.

I'm not a commercial Adventure game developer but have a lot in common with them, and sympathy for them. I feel it important that there is understanding of the different positions, otherwise threads such as this can just be trench warfare.

Firstly developers are ordinary people like you and I. They produce games very much for the love of doing so, hoping to cover their costs rather than make a fortune. Margins are not great in Adventure games right now, for a number of reasons.

Secondly compatibility issues are a real nightmare on the PC. They add seriously to development and support costs, further eroding what margins there are.

Thirdly it will cost developers to move to developing games on consoles. Unlike on a PC the SDKs cost real money.

Actually if an adventure game is developed for pc then after a time to console , thats ok.

But if they develop the game for both pc and ps , then they try to make the game playable by console pads , also they add some action , as this ruins the ADVENTURE game, as i mentioned before, longest journey and dreamfall2 , broken sword 1&2 and broken sword 3 ... the first series are developed for pc and the second ones for both platforms , and you can ask AG players which series of the games above they enjoyed playing..

Knight there are just as many games that were developed for several platforms simultaneously that do not contain any action at all. Adventure games are NOT ruined by being developed for consoles as well as PC. There are plenty of games that were never released on any console and still contain action. It's a choice developers make that has nothing to do with the intended platform(s), but has everything to do with their perception of the audience and possible number of sold copies. For instance Wanted a Wild West Adventure contained action-sequences (shoot-outs), it was the sequel to a point and click adventure called 3 Skulls of the Toltecs. Not released on any platform except PC. So the developers did not do this with console-owners in mind.

Lots of games that were released on consoles and PC do NOT contain action. In fact, most games chrissie mentions, such as Broken Sword 1 and 2, the Discworld games, Myst and Riven, were developed for PC and PlayStation 1 simultaneously yet there is no action involved. There may be some relation, but it's nowhere near as straightforward and definite as you seem to think.

oopsPolloDiablo! - I suspected after I'd posted that it wasn't a PS1 TLC meant!

I went on to get a PS2 when it came out but after all the AGs released for the PS1 I felt 'cheated' as there has only been about 6 true AGs made for it since it's launch! Pathetic!! smile

6 adventure games made for PS2?
The only ones I can think of are Escape from Monkey Island, Echo Night Beyond, and Myst III: Exile.
What are the others?
Or are you thinking of Europe-only releases?

I enjoy my pc gaming! However, also on a console (not often though) i was given a couple years ago. I enjoy adventure games (some action/adventure ones IF i can find cheat codes...or trainer for them on my pc...bad hands)...my interest in having more for the portable game systems Psp, DS whatever, is being able to take it WITH me when i am out or on short trip. My gripe is that for the consoles, compared to PC..there are not enough adventure games...same with handheld. Overall, if i had to make a choice to have just 1 system for games it would be the PC. use it for internet, and email, online gameing so to me is an ''all in one'' system...for the type of games I LIKE to play. But that doesn't mean i am against console gaming...i just wish it were possible when an adventure game was released it could be available for them ALL!!! (the one advantage being w/console don't have to worry about specs..and you can be comfy!) I want to keep adventure games booming..so we can continue to have these good games to play!!!

For PS2 I have
1) Beyond Atlantis II: The New World (Atlantis III: The New World in Europe)
2) The Glass Rose (there's a very small amount of action consisting of clicking in a certain corner of a screen within a certain amount of time, nothing I couldn't handle)
3) Largo Winch Empire Under Threat
4) Shadow of Destiny (Shadow of Memories in Europe)
and
- Echo Night Beyond (wouldn't consider this a true adventure though).
In Europe Syberia 1 and 2 and Versailles II were also released on PS2. Still looking to buy these and Escape from Monkey Island and Myst III Exile (if you include Echo Night Beyond that would make ten adventures wink ).

Leeana I'm not offended, I just couldn't understand why you didn't want me to enjoy adventures on a different system. smile

Chrissie - Echo Nights Beyond is a sci-fi/horror game about people crashlanding on a honeymoon on the moon. The main character has to find lost objects to set 'souls' free but there are sequences where he has to flee and run, trying to escape and not let his heart beat get too high. It could very well be that Versailles was only released in France, I haven't found it either but saw it listed on several game-sites.

Thanks PolloDiablo - Echo Nights beyond does ring a bell now!! Is it worth playing?? As for Versaillies 2 - I did find it for the PC & found it to be quite a good game with nice graphics. The first one I had for the PS1 I really loved despite the dire graphics! but it was a wonderful story! smile
