I cant understand why game companies are still trying to sell adventure games to Ps or nintendo platforms. Adventure fans are mostly pc users , and i dont think any ps or nintendo player cares for an adventure title more then a pc user.

I have been playing adventure games since i started to use computer and i never buy an adventure game that can be playable on Ps..

Well, I am an adventure lover too, but I do buy adventure games on PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo DS (and whichever console they're on).

I don't understand why you seem to think I shouldn't. It's about the story, about the puzzles, about the world to discover or the murder to solve. What difference does it make what platform it's on? A lot of people think that the adventure genre is dead and that there's only action and sports games nowadays. If there are more adventures on Nintendo DS and Xbox, more people will see them and realize that there are games they can play.

If an adventure is released on several platforms, I tend to buy the console-version, in an attempt to show the developers and publishers that there IS a market for these games. I hope it convinces them to release more adventure games.

I'll be back, one day, when I feel like it.

Good point,Pollo - possibly they would then re-do some of the older PC games that we have to tweak to death to enjoy...

knight , I'm a little confused .You wouldn't buy a game for the PC that was also available for PS /console ?

Hi smile

Hopefully though, Adventure Games will continue to be developed primarily for PC ??

I would hate to think of the priority being switched to any type of console.
I have invested heavily in my computers for gaming and with a restricted budget can't afford other machines as well sick

Cheers.

Hi Knight wave I started off with a PS1 to play AGS on - I accumulated quite a few then eventually got a PS2. The AGs that were made for it were far & few, it was a waste of money & I went on to buy a PC as it seemed the only platform that most AGs were made for. It is an expensive thing to buy just for games!

My view is that Consoles are made to play games on & all genres should be available. If this was the case then maybe AG fans would buy a console (which is a cheaper & more efficient option!) Sadly there seems to be a little stereotyping as to who plays what on what! - you can buy most games for PC but not for consoles & no offence! but you're comments just reflect the attitude of the consoles industry! Why should there be a divide??

I have to agree with Mad, i don't mind if Adv games are released for consoles as long as they are released for PC as well. My brother owns a PS2 a PS3 an XBOX, an X360 and a Wii but i haven't played any games whatsoever on them simply because of the controls. They are much more difficult for me using a joypad and also because the games that i like playing come out on the pc as well. I haven't seen many adventure games only for consoles due to the fact that adventure gamers are almost entirely pc gamers. Some games come out in more than one platform but it's obvious that that's just a move to make extra money but their basic aim is for the pc. Some pc version of adventure games have or are coming out on consoles (e.g Still Life, And Then There Were None) but it has been limited to only a few. Console gamers are more likely to go for games such as Football/sports, racing and games like Halo whereas PC gamers are more likely to go for multiplayer/single player shoot-em up games, RPG online games and Action/Adventure games. That's how it has always been. My humble opinion

While I 'do' love playing adventure games on the PC (and I am an avid PC gamer), I 'do' see the reasons (esp financial ones) behind some developers' decisions to expand their games to other non-PC platforms. In fact, one may argue that many titles on the consoles are really adventure/action-adventure games in disguise.

I agree with Butcher that as long as the title also appears on the PC, I am ok with it. Having this said, there are many "adventure" titles on the consoles that I would love to have on the PC (Fatal Frame, for example).

Thats the fact , and as pollo said i would like to solve puzzles or mystery in an ag like the old point and click style ,not the action adventure of ps platforms.

As an example the longest journey and dreamfall 2 , the first one is a real adventure game i enjoyed playing very much and the second one is an action adventure that made for all platforms ..

But there ARE pure adventures on the PS and Xbox.

I have all three Discworld games, which I can't get to work under Windows XP, so I bought them for the PlayStation and they work perfectly. I have Louvre/Messenger, some of the Atlantis and Egypt games, both Dracula games, Still Life, Largo Winch and Shadow of Memories on console that have also been released on PC. For handheld consoles I have Broken Sword on the GameBoy Advance.

They are still pure point-and-click adventures, that doesn't change once it's on a different platform. The controls are no different, you point with a stick instead of a mouse but that is not more difficult in any way, and you click a round button instead of your mousebutton. No real difference there either. It's certainly not harder than mouse or keyboard.

I also have a couple of pure adventures that are unique to consoles or handhelds, such as Another Code/Trace Memory, The Phoenix Wright games and Hotel Dusk for the Nintendo DS and Fish Files, The New Addams Family and Scooby Doo on the GameBoy. There is no action in any of these, they are not action-adventures in disguise. I still don't understand why I should not play these? If you don't want to play them, that's fine with me, that's your choice. I do, so I don't understand why you think developers and publishers should stop releasing them so I can't play them anymore...

Hi smile

I will say again that as long as Adventures are still made for PC I don't mind what other machines they are made for. The more the merrier so that as many people as possible can experience the genre thumbsup

I have only ever tried one console game myself - on some kind of a cube shaped affair. ( lol)
But have to say that one go was enough to put me off. Didn't like the graphics and couldn't handle the controls.
Give me a PC any time !! hearts

I agree with you Mad. I stared out playing Zelda on the old Nintendo that was my son's. As I found out about PC games and was able to get a computer, I prefer computer games. Although when the kids are home, we always get together and play Bomberman or Mario Cart on the gamecube.

That being said, I do prefer that adventure games are on PC. I can use the mouse so much better, although I have used a gamepad for a few games on PC. But I also can see that ones that like the joystick or gamepad might prefer a consol game. There isn't the "will it work on my system" problem too. And if more people play the consol versions of games, they will probably want to play more like it and there will be more demand for adventure games in both consol and PC. I think it is win-win for everyone to put the adventure gaming in different formats. (Just as long as I can still play them on my PC! bravo )

I'm with the "more the merrier" group.

I like to play on the PC, but also like the ease of use of the consoles--no wondering if it will play, no tweaking and trying again, and it's easier for more than one person to enjoy at the same time.

I'm glad to have a choice with some games, and wish there were more AG's coming out for both the PC and the consoles. That way, everyone could play on their favorite platform puppy wave

There are games on the PC that are gamepad compatible but there are some games on console that are mouse compatible! Just thought that was worth mentioning! smile

I have read someplace that soon Myst will be available for the Nintendo DS lite. I have been thinking about getting something like the GameBoy to take along in car/purse for when you have to be in 'waiting room', etc. but wanted something that played a regular adventure game....NOT an action/adventure. So--i am thinking about getting one of those DS...and Myst and BrainGames, and there is another adventure game for it...i just can't remember the title..murder mystery i believe..
I like PC adventure games, but if they came out for consoles i would get those too, HOWEVER, what i have found is that sometimes you get more of a save option w/the pc versions you don't get w/the consoles...and the other thing is....i don't want to spend money getting 3 different consoles! they ought to have the older adventure games done so that they'd be available for any of the big 3. (xbox, PS, Nintendo) New ones too! i dont' really understand why they don't. means more $$'s for the companies!

I think PolloDiablo has nailed it on the head with his complete listing of adventure games available now or soon to be available for the Nintendo DS - - a great little gaming platform by the way.

I've mentioned this same topic at least twice on this wonderful site and it's interesting to note that the number of adventure games for the DS is increasing. Not so much for the PS2 or PS3 or the XBox 360 but even some of these games - - as pointed out in one of the messages above - - have elements of adventure along with some action (the first three Splinter Cell games were a great combo of these elements).

It only makes sense for the game developers to get their games out for the consoles as well as the PC if they can afford to do so. The more venues that are used will let more folks discover the adventure games and that is good for all

ahhem may I please put my two cents in smile please I for one agree with The pc point and click gamming pnly because I dont need to use a joy-stick nor would I have to shell out more money for the developers of the game!

I guess you really "Cant" teach an old dog a new trick, but then again if you had a really bigger screen say a T.V. and a really great game with a mouse to point and click of course then and only then I will switch from my pc! Never for those other gamming ways Please mr developers please make only adventure games on pc for us boomers smile Thank You!

I am a personal fan of the DS as a platform that actually is uniquely suited to adventures, as long as they are designed with the DS functionalities in mind. I have every one that is out and plan on gobbling up the rest as they release. What can I say... I love my DS smile

Pollo is dead on about all the games breaking out for it that are pure adventure. Even ole Nancy D. is taking a spin.

We're having thoughts on console porting now and the Wii has a lot of interesting features that might make it work well for Adventure styled games. Not sure about it yet, it's a huge cost jump designing for a next gen console, and the game has to be designed for console not just ported to it for it to really work well. - but we have it under deep consideration.

But one thing about a console is no worries for the gamer about system specs. And you aren't limited to a monitor screen. Imagine Syberia on HD wide screen, kicking back in your favorite chair with surround sound stereo playing. Yummm Plus for developers, who aren't exactly getting rich lately - it does give you access to a much larger audience - assuming you can build a game with enough depth, interactive fun etc to keep a more mainstream gamer interested.

On the other hand, the interface can be a huge clunky jump after the ease of mouse driven games and the cost of designing for console is definitely far above PC based development costs. But.... you never know smile

I totally agree with you Pollo. I think it is great that we live in a day and an age that we can play games no matter on what system. I work with school kids with special needs and we are studying pioneer American right now. Those pioneers had no spare time, they were too busy trying to feed and clothe families with very little.

Even when I was a kid, a computer in your home would be science fiction, and I am not 50 years old yet. So for me to come home and play a game of my choice on the PC to relax, or chat on IM with my daughter in college, or email pictures of my grandson is wonderful, it is truly a blessing! I can know what is happening almost in an instant compared to letter writing in my college days. Then when we get together and break out the gamecube and race against each other or play whatever game we want is such fun. I think that is the point, we ENJOY our games on whatever system. So whatever the format, PC or consol, have fun with it, be thankful we can! bravo

Wow!

I'm impressed with the list for Nintendo ! And since I'm shopping tomorrow ,I may just take another look at those and the games available on shelf - I was very tempted with Narnia...
will let you know ,point is - it's nice to be able to choose. And I know some would play adventure games if they were able to get them for the console they have.
People have to buy adventure games, no matter the platform ,to make them worth producing .

Niteowl, I'm impressed with the DS list too.

I don't think it needs to be either/or--The more the merrier puppy

My son played the Syberia's on Xbox, I played them on puter. We both loved it. He could not have played it on the puter--didn't have one that would run it. I did not have an Xbox at the time, but I bought one because I figured that some games are better on the consoles and some are better on the puter, and heck, I'm in my second childhood while I can still sort of afford it, so why not!

I can't agree with this statement. It implies such selfishness.
Most of us would surely be very happy that people could play Adventure games on any number of different systems as long as these systems don't replace the PC.

I know I would yes

Unfortunately that is exactly what some people in this thread seem to want Mad, they say there should NOT be any adventure on any platform other than PC. That's what triggered my analogy. I know many people don't mind multi-platform releases, but some do. And I don't understand why. Different people, different tastes.

Some adventure games for Nintendo DS use the features of that console (e.g microphone to blow in, touch screen, two screens at the same time) so they would never work on a PC. They work fine on a Nintendo DS which they were specifically designed for, but since they're not released for PC, they shouldn't exist at all, according to some people. That is selfish.

chrissie, I have most of these as well and indeed not all were released in the NTSC-region. However TLC asked about the PSP, the PlayStation Portable. wink I don't think any adventure other than Myst was released for it.

I'm not a commercial Adventure game developer but have a lot in common with them, and sympathy for them. I feel it important that there is understanding of the different positions, otherwise threads such as this can just be trench warfare.

Firstly developers are ordinary people like you and I. They produce games very much for the love of doing so, hoping to cover their costs rather than make a fortune. Margins are not great in Adventure games right now, for a number of reasons.

Secondly compatibility issues are a real nightmare on the PC. They add seriously to development and support costs, further eroding what margins there are.

Thirdly it will cost developers to move to developing games on consoles. Unlike on a PC the SDKs cost real money.

Actually if an adventure game is developed for pc then after a time to console , thats ok.

But if they develop the game for both pc and ps , then they try to make the game playable by console pads , also they add some action , as this ruins the ADVENTURE game, as i mentioned before, longest journey and dreamfall2 , broken sword 1&2 and broken sword 3 ... the first series are developed for pc and the second ones for both platforms , and you can ask AG players which series of the games above they enjoyed playing..

Knight there are just as many games that were developed for several platforms simultaneously that do not contain any action at all. Adventure games are NOT ruined by being developed for consoles as well as PC. There are plenty of games that were never released on any console and still contain action. It's a choice developers make that has nothing to do with the intended platform(s), but has everything to do with their perception of the audience and possible number of sold copies. For instance Wanted a Wild West Adventure contained action-sequences (shoot-outs), it was the sequel to a point and click adventure called 3 Skulls of the Toltecs. Not released on any platform except PC. So the developers did not do this with console-owners in mind.

Lots of games that were released on consoles and PC do NOT contain action. In fact, most games chrissie mentions, such as Broken Sword 1 and 2, the Discworld games, Myst and Riven, were developed for PC and PlayStation 1 simultaneously yet there is no action involved. There may be some relation, but it's nowhere near as straightforward and definite as you seem to think.

oopsPolloDiablo! - I suspected after I'd posted that it wasn't a PS1 TLC meant!

I went on to get a PS2 when it came out but after all the AGs released for the PS1 I felt 'cheated' as there has only been about 6 true AGs made for it since it's launch! Pathetic!! smile

6 adventure games made for PS2?
The only ones I can think of are Escape from Monkey Island, Echo Night Beyond, and Myst III: Exile.
What are the others?
Or are you thinking of Europe-only releases?

I enjoy my pc gaming! However, also on a console (not often though) i was given a couple years ago. I enjoy adventure games (some action/adventure ones IF i can find cheat codes...or trainer for them on my pc...bad hands)...my interest in having more for the portable game systems Psp, DS whatever, is being able to take it WITH me when i am out or on short trip. My gripe is that for the consoles, compared to PC..there are not enough adventure games...same with handheld. Overall, if i had to make a choice to have just 1 system for games it would be the PC. use it for internet, and email, online gameing so to me is an ''all in one'' system...for the type of games I LIKE to play. But that doesn't mean i am against console gaming...i just wish it were possible when an adventure game was released it could be available for them ALL!!! (the one advantage being w/console don't have to worry about specs..and you can be comfy!) I want to keep adventure games booming..so we can continue to have these good games to play!!!

For PS2 I have
1) Beyond Atlantis II: The New World (Atlantis III: The New World in Europe)
2) The Glass Rose (there's a very small amount of action consisting of clicking in a certain corner of a screen within a certain amount of time, nothing I couldn't handle)
3) Largo Winch Empire Under Threat
4) Shadow of Destiny (Shadow of Memories in Europe)
and
- Echo Night Beyond (wouldn't consider this a true adventure though).
In Europe Syberia 1 and 2 and Versailles II were also released on PS2. Still looking to buy these and Escape from Monkey Island and Myst III Exile (if you include Echo Night Beyond that would make ten adventures wink ).

Leeana I'm not offended, I just couldn't understand why you didn't want me to enjoy adventures on a different system. smile

Chrissie - Echo Nights Beyond is a sci-fi/horror game about people crashlanding on a honeymoon on the moon. The main character has to find lost objects to set 'souls' free but there are sequences where he has to flee and run, trying to escape and not let his heart beat get too high. It could very well be that Versailles was only released in France, I haven't found it either but saw it listed on several game-sites.

Thanks PolloDiablo - Echo Nights beyond does ring a bell now!! Is it worth playing?? As for Versaillies 2 - I did find it for the PC & found it to be quite a good game with nice graphics. The first one I had for the PS1 I really loved despite the dire graphics! but it was a wonderful story! smile
