I was just curious about something. Which type of game do people find outputs the scariest atmosphere 1st person or 3rd person. I find that 1st person puts you more within the game itself, 3rd person I think would be better for comedy games. Any comments think

1st person is scarier, but maybe it's because I'm used to horror games being in the 1st person perspective. 7th guest, 11th hour, shivers - all 1st person.

The scariest games I've played through are Silent Hill and Resident Evil 2, and both are 3rd person, so I guess it's just what we're used to.

On the other hand, I bought Darkfall, and it lasted all of 10 minutes because I was too scared. :| It's now collecting dust nicely on the shelf of "i'll play this when I have time during the day when my hubby's around" games.

Yes... I think "first person" is a more immersive experience - It really allows the player to feel like there are inside exploring the environment.

However, I think 3rd person is better for mystery type games.
Someday I would like to create a 3rd person game.

As I am always sayin', I love first person the BEST in any gaming situation. I don't really like seeing a "character" - I'd rather pretend I WAS that character! Of course this doesnt keep me from playing third person games, just that I much prefer first person. As for scary games - third person just totally ruins the scariness of it!

Sassafras, couldn't have said it any better than you did... my sentiments exactly. Part of the eerie/scary-factor in a 1st person environment is that you're often all ALONE !

I think maybe this thread explains to me why I like third person games and not first person games, since I also do not care for the so-called "scary, horror" games. I keep finding posts where someone mentions Dark Fall as one of the scariest games they ever played and I found it to be totally boring and not the least bit scary. Well, at the time I didn't know it was supposed to be scary so maybe that had something to do with it, do you suppose? Anyway, I do not think of being scared as being in the same league with being adventurous, so they are 2 different types of games and I happen to be interested in the adventure scene, driven by curiosity, not fear.

To love is to be happy with!

For me, the opposite. If I play first person, it takes me out of the story and I respond as I would in real life. Third person allows me to be that character and enter the story, playing make believe. So, third person is scarier for me.

Hi smile

I too prefer 3rd person in any type of game, scary or otherwise, but I do play 1st person as well.

After all, can't miss out on a good game just because of that ....

What would my BAAGS Counsellor say ?? lol

Cheers.

The scariest game I ever played was a 3rd person survival horror.
For more static games, like adventure games, 1st person is probably better though.

One can see that opinions vary! Which avoids life being boring!

If one's making a game then make it how you yourself would like a game to be.

Either 1st or 3rd person can be really scary. In 1st person you can be frightened for yourself to open a door, I found playing "Zork Nemesis" creepy to name one. Perhaps in 3rd person you can feel protective towards your ingame character.

I like 1st person in scary games because it does make me feel like I'm right there. In games like Tomb Raider I like 3rd person because its' action is more fun when I can see where the character is going and what the character is doing.

If we're just talking scariness, as the original poster asked, I definitely think 1st person lends to scarier atmosphere in a game. I think some of the spookier games I've played, like Dark Fall or Scratches, wouldn't have been nearly as spooky if they were 3rd person perspective.

For me I prefer 3rd. person mainly because sometimes first person can make me nauseaus. But as far as scare factor go's it doesnt matter, if its good and scary its works for me either way. smile

I like both but it depends on the game. In URU you were given a chose to switch from first to third person and I liked that!! But I love first person for scarey ones. It scares the pants off me

My overall preference for games is 3rd person. But for scary/spooky games I do like first person. It seems to up the suspense when you can't see if something is sneaking up behind you. smile

I too like the option of being able to switch back and forth between first and third person views, but most of the time it really doesn't matter to me. I feel that the in game atmosphere dictates more to me about how scary the game is. Its all about the music, lighting, sound effects and things going bumb in the night. And lastly the occasional monster or creatures jumping out at me. Definately does it for me.scared
