I have been playing adventure games for a while. I haven't played as many as I would like though. I find some puzzles to be, to hard. Does anyone else have this problem?

The reason I brought this up is because I am playing Nibiru, and am having trouble with the key of the Gods puzzle. Hopefully I will get it.

Best Regards,
Preston smile

Preston, if worse comes to worse there is an excellent walk through on this website by Mag. I don't know how you feel about those things but sometimes we all need a little help.

I would finish very, very few adventure games without the occasional help from a walkthrough. And that's a fact! smile wave

Hi smile

On re-playing my games, I nearly always get stuck in exactly the same place as I did first time round !!

How bad is that ??

I used to get so frustrated with some of the puzzles in a game smashpcthe first thing I do is go to the hints forum and what do you know, some one else is stuck in the same place!! Nice to know I'm not alone :/ then my next step is the walkthrough I would like to finish a game on my own,so far I haven't been able to duh I agree with DragonUK44 if you go away from it and come back most times I can solve it!! wave

I may not have gone where I intended to go,but I think I have ended up where I need to be.

I'm with you Preston. A lot of games I didn't bother finishing because the puzzles were too hard. One game in particular that comes to mind is the alien math puzzle in Rama, and I paid a lot of money for that game when it first came out. I also don't like games that tax your joints when you play them.

I ve gone to bed and woke up in the middle of the night with what I may think the answer is .I would rather use the hints forum as some times you see to much in a walk through and it can spoil the game but some times well .you have to to go on

Right. I enjoyed that puzzle in Nibiru. But some people just aren't able to solve that type of puzzle at all -- so they don't enjoy it at all. If you run into a puzzle you can't do and/or don't want to do, just use a walkthrough to get past it.

If all you need is a push, then try the Universal Hints System to get you going rather than a full-scale walkthrough.

I can't do sound puzzles myself.

blush The problems I really hate are the ones where I figure out what to do and still can't complete. I remember cursing that crystal chair in MYST IV because even after I figured out an answer I still wasn't quick enough to finish it. I also remember one of the Sherlock Holmes puzzles where I needed about two hours to get by a dog because I had to hit a particular pixal at exactly the proper moment. I don't mind being wrong (Indeed I'm used to it) but when I'm correct and still can't get the thing solved,I tend to say vile things to my computer. blush

Preston, I always try to solve them on my own. However, when I cease having fun and become frustrated, it's time to put the fun back in the game and get help.

I sometimes use Uhs, sometimes I check a Boomer Walkthrough, and sometimes I ask in the hints forum here which is excellent. thumbsup

Have to join the club here; more oft than not I reach the point of needing to look for help.

A lot of people had problems with those, myself included. It isn't really a puzzle when it depends so much on manual dexterity, guesswork, and luck.

Actually, it's not the game's fault either.

It's the developers' fault.

Say bad words to the developers.

Following on from Dragonuk44 above.

I find timed, and difficult mini-game sequences in adventure games frustrating. If I want action/shooter games I will buy them for what they are, not hidden inside adventures.

Puzzles, mazes, sliders OK! They go with the territory, but there's nothing worse to me than settling down for a nice relaxing "adventure" and suddenly being dropped into a frantic fight for survival.

I found some of the later mini-games in In Memoriam (Missing Since January) almost impossible and only got there by luck in the end. Thankfully I persevered and found those in Evidence a little more user friendly, and not too distracting from the game.

But then again everyone to their own taste! Smile and get on with it!.

Ugh! That crystal chair puzzle AND the mangree puzzle!!!!2 of the worst i have ever come across.......I really do dislike intensely those types of puzzles...you know what to do but are unable for whatever reason to be fast enough or accurate enough(and usually fast enough too)to get that puzzle done!...the Gahreesen pressure plate power up room in Uru is another one of those.. I find no shame in going to hint areas or walkthroughs. These are games....they're meant to be enjoyed...if banging your head against a wall because you can't solve a puzzle is fun for you...so be it....BUT not me! Huge thanks to all who post hints, walkthroughs, and /or answere emails on the games! and Huge Thanks to the GameBoomers!!

I'm playing ND Crystal Skull right now and I had to use a walkthrough for the "make the guy sneeze" puzzle. The game gave zero feedback or hints about what you were supposed to do or how the objects interacted with each other. It would've been nice if you could see an animation of how each object behaved.
Click to reveal..
Like the teeth chattering. I didn't know they moved in a straight line. And who knew that the teeth would knock down a support for the shelf...who knew it was even loose.

Usually when I get stuck and consult a wt, I bonk my head and think Oh yeah that makes sense. But this one had a billion different combinations that could have worked so there was no head bonking when I got the solution, just a somewhat frustrated sigh.

Just a thought but when doing a puzzal in an adventure game and you know what to do but are just that little bit to slow .Is this really classed as a puzzal .As some one said above if you want a shoot out or a game where you have to be fast you would play a action game .Adventure to me .To a point is thinking about a puzzal and trying to solve it but not to the point where you are going bauld .Hence the hints and the walk throughs but on a timed puzzal if you ar nt fast enough .Well you are stu--ed unless you have some one do that bit for you .

Adventure games are for your amusement, not to test your intelligence with solving puzzles. I play games for the fun of it. If I get stuck, I check a walkthrough. If I really, really get stuck and have tried solving a puzzle for days, I will ask for a save ... mostly the timed stuff ...

I don't feel guilty about doing that, at all!!!

Zookeeper,

I agree with you on that puzzle in Crystal Skull. You obviously knew it was some sort of puzzle when you got all of the squares as you picked up an object. But you are right...there was no feedback in the game as to why you would do this...how you would use the sneezing powder, etc. "This will come in handy" when the powder was picked up was wayyyyyy too subtle! duh

Once you realized that the objects could work together in a chain reaction...it was great! A really neat puzzle! grin But unless the object was in the correct spot...you had no idea what it did. I accidentally got the record player to play...but hadn't a clue why. And I inflated the balloon...but my first instinct was to put the sneezing powder above it so it would spill when the balloon inflated. Was there a hint or a clue that I missed???? think

JK,

I worked on that puzzle for more than an hour and I never got any of the items to do anything. So if you put one in the right place it would do it's thing? Is that how you were supposed to figure out how the items would interact with each other? Even so, there was an infinite number of ways to create a chain reaction. I also tried to put the sneezing powder above the balloon to spill it. smile

Not necessarily, Zookeeper. For example, I put the fan where it would logically go...due to the plug...but unless something turned it on...it didn't move. The only "hints" I saw was the size of the space...either a square or rectangle.

In hindsight...if you were lucky enough to start the phonograph, then you could think what might music do...cause someone to dance, etc...but still...there was no clue suggesting you start a chain reaction.

When I got the phonograph started, I sort of hoped Lamont would come by to turn it off! blush How lame an idea was that???

Hands down, the hardest puzzle in all my adventure game playing years is the one from the old Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. You know, where you:
Click to reveal..

take off robe, hang robe on wall to cover hole, spread towel over drain, block the service panel with the satchel, put junk mail on top of satchel (god forbid if you didn't take it), push the button...to get a babel fish.

And if you don't do it fast enough, it's game over. Yikes!

btw, I still have a saved game of Nibiru right at the puzzle you're talking about. (the spinning circles, right?) From last year. I gave up. :/

To be completely honest and likely to face the gameboomers firing squad, I don't start a game without downloading the walkthrough first.

I'm VERY impatient and have actually stopped playing a game because hard puzzles bore me rather than challenge me.

But I still buy every game that comes out and have a library of about 60 of them so will someday try the ones I quit again.

I think the arcade-type puzzles in Nancy Drew games are some of the worst ever. They're timed and require expert-level hand/eye coordination. The Barnacle Blaster in The Haunted Carousel and the sewing maching puzzle in Secret of the Old Clock are two that top my list of hated puzzles.

On the other hand, Nancy Drew games often have very clever and fun puzzles, as well, or else we wouldn't be playing them.
