Hi Boomers...

I was wondering something again...It has to do with boredom in a game..Now you might totally love the game.....But !!!

There is something that will bore you... What would that be ? For me its too many puzzles in an adventure game.

I like adventure...If there are too many puzzles it takes away the adventure for me...Then I get bored.. :/

What do you think ? think

Actually I was thinking the exact opposite. Not enough puzzles bores me. That's the adventure part for me, to figure out what needs to be done next and how to accomplish it.

If there aren't enough puzzles I feel like I'm playing with a kids interactive storybook and not a game.

Well, I'm with you on that Ms Tigre! wink

I do get bored/frustrated with repetative, unneccassry traipsing back and forth! You know, you're in room A, you need a screwdriver to open a panel. You go to room B to get the screwdriver. Go to room a to use it. Open panel and see that you need pliers. Go back to room B to pick up pliers that were not avaiable to pick up before. Go to room A, use pliers. See that you need wires, go back to room C to get wires.....etc....etc...

As boring as that was to read, it's more boring to do! sleep

I agree some what....But..
We don't want to get carried away with puzzles in adventure games. Because then they would have to be in the class with casual games or puzzle games like Majong..etc etc. think

Casual games are entirely different puzzles Darleen. In a good adventure you should be thinking and planning your way through. Give me a safe to crack or computer to hack or a lock to pick. I want things that test my brain power. lol

I was going to post something along these same lines, looney, but no need to because you explained it better than I would have! smile

"Traipsing back & forth" like that is boring to me, as is any unnecessarily bizarre inventory puzzle. I hate it when you come across inventory puzzles in a game where you basically have to try clicking all your inventory items on something to figure out which works, because the solution isn't logically or reasonably apparent. It's boring & frustrating, and can kill the momentum of a story.

The most boring thing for me is when I'm unable to make any progress because of physical limitations. For example the shooting arcade in Wanted (The Westerner). I could repeat that stupid thing 10 million times and still wouldn't be any closer to getting past it.

must admit when you have to keep going back and forth all the time instead of letting you pick all the stuff up at once .Mazes I hate those .I will try but I just have no sense of direction and some times when playing a game I keep going the wrong way and when they do those little turn offs .That are so easy to miss and you go around in circles .You know its there some where but you just don happen to hit the spot .When the things you need are to well hidden .You can t really see them and its just pot luck when you hit it with your curser lol

arcadelike games in my adventure games where you cannot ever advance in the story or do anything else until you win the silly thing and when you 'miss' or fail you have to repeat the same thing over and over and over into infinity. Bores me right away from the adventure or begging for a Gameboomer to send me a saved game to get me past it. A 'cheat' should be built into every arcade 'puzzle' in my Adventure games which can be initiated after less than 100 tries to beat it.

wave Absolutely, the 'traipsing back and forth' as well as incessant conversation trees. IMHO, I think these strategies are simply used to lengthen a game.

Hi all; For me it would be anything keyboard operated, as it takes away from the story and adventure trying to use the function keys and follow the adventure at the same time.

Hi smile

Getting stuck on a puzzle (with no by-pass option mad) that requires reflexes quicker than I can muster ....

Along with the anticipation of more of the same down the line eek

Boring, boring and boring !!

Cheers.

Offices. I've already spent a lot of my life in offices. In my gaming, I prefer something more exotic. I know that offices are a fact of life, so I tolerate them in games. But I'm always looking to break out of them.

I agree with you Darleen. I don't like to be hit with puzzle after puzzle. I like to traipse around and talk at length to everyone, although I do like inventory puzzles, even if they seem illogical in the real world. I thought The Longest Journey did it all just about right.

With me, it's when I can't get on with the characters. I lost the will to live during Martin Mystere and in The Watchmaker. I don't mind traipsing around and I can happily move crates all day in Broken Sword 3 - but to spend my time with characters I don't like or don't connect to bores me right out of the game. sleep

Having to talk to all the characters in all the locations about each and every inventory item. Then, as soon as an new thing is found, to have to do it all over again. It's the main reason I prefer games with solitary exploration.

Im with Browneyedtigre. For example in the new "Evil under the sun" game you have to play almost half the game before you get even 1 puzzle, and thats a simple "put the ripped letter pieces together". BORING!

Absolutely! Especially if I die and have to do it all over again because I didn't save save save....

And the lengthy stealth puzzle in BS 3 trying to get into the castle - it has been a week and I just can't make myself return to the game. I do get tired of dying.

Linda duh

**edit: I agree with BettyLou, I would love a button to be pushed to by-pass the arcade games that tend to be impossible for my limited reflexes. wave

I guess what bores me most is when a game isn't clear as to what your next move should be. I realize they can't tell you where to go or what to do or it wouldn't be much of a challenge but I'm having a problem staying "into" The Awakened right now, I'm about half way through, cause it seems like I wander around wondering what to do next. This is why I love the checklist in the Nancy Drew games.

Boy, we are a diverse group.

I don't know that I've been bored in a game yet--frustrated most certainly, but not bored. Or maybe I was so bored I dumped the game from memory wink

The traipsing back and forth just like Jess said so excellently, and games like the Nancy Drew, White Wolf that I am trying to figure out. I quit playing it for awhile because I am tired of doing laundry and cooking. I mean that awaits me everytime I walk in the door from work in real life. So now I am not only bored doing laundry and cooking in the game, I am traipsing around trying to figure out what I was doing a few months ago--ggrrrrr.....boring!!! sleep

Good one. The time I have to play games is limited, and the last thing I want to do is waste it waiting for some guard to mosey off into what I guestimate to be the correct position -- over and over again until I get it right.

I will go along with the "Traipsing back & forth" comments- I get very bored with that- a close second is not being able to pick somethin up or do something until you trigger something else- I say if I find it- let me have it- or walk into it! rolleyes

Let's not forget having to move and rotate your character back and forth to "aim" him properly to be able to pick up inventory... for every single piece of inventory.

I get bored easily too when I have to return to a certain spot in the game to pick up items that weren't there before of if I have to return to a room to click on a hotspot that's only been activated in that room because of something I did in another room. Tiresome, annoying and boring I find this.

Sound or music puzzles, mazes and timed puzzles, frustrates me more than anything. I do tend to find them interesting, but like colour puzzles I am not good at them. (I don't like colour puzzles in games, since I'm colourblind. It really is annoying to click the darkgreen thingie when you needed to click the lightred thingie or the pink or purple thingie...).

In some of the earlier adventure games, there tended to be much pixel hunting. You needed to put the cursor exactly where the item you needed was. Luckily, the newer adventure games seemed to have understood that this is not very enjoying for the player.

The thing is sound & music and colour puzzles really do bore me. I like them a lot smile but they tend to bore me very much. They are often done in a way so it's very tedious to solve them. It becomes more a task or chore of finishing the puzzle than it becomes about enjoying the otherwisw well planned out game smile

I WANT to show every inventory item to every character. That's something I liked about the first Broken Sword game, and missed in the second. In the first you could show just about every item to every character and get a funny response.

I find first person games with puzzle after puzzle after puzzle and no characters to talk to extremly tedious. I'm not a Myst fan.

I'am with Joe - too much dialog (as in B&B for example). To wait for hours until he and she and the one over there said what they have to say bores me a lot.

What makes me laugh out loud is the items I can take in my trouser pocket (a ladder for example). But sorry, that's not the thread.
