Another site gave Shivers 1&2 bad reviews but I loved both those games. The same site gave Conspiracies a bad review but that's a keeper for me. Conversely, everyone gave Grim Fandango a good review but I couldn't get into that game at all. Kim

I also thought Nightlong was an excellent game.

I love the wackiness of Starship Titanic and was astonished to find that so many people don't like it.

"Nightlong" was the first game I played through without a walkthrough - a nicely done game.
I almost didn't get and play my favourite game (Legacy of Time) because of the poor ratings on the Adventure websites. Ratings do more harm than good IMHO.

Rama. Mostly because of some insanely difficult puzzles which required you to calculate in Base-8 and Base-12 (I think, can't remember exactly), it got pretty bad marks in reviews. But I loved it. It was my first introduction into the world of Arthur C. Clarke and I've since read a lot of his books.

I liked Nightlong and Ring I, but the one that will probably set me apart is (gasp) Temujin. It had that small view window, which was bad, but apart from that it was a fine game, or so I thought. Still do.
I don't suppose I'll survive long after admitting this.

There are a lot, but the one that comes to mind, really, is Myst. I still can't believe that so many people can't stand it, think it's responsible for the (so-called) death of the genre, and get so vitriolic when discussing it!
Runaway and Road to INdia were another two that I saw horrible reviews for, so I didn't play them for a long time. But then I realy liked them. And Crystal Key 1. (In fact, I see so many reviews that say Dreamcatcher/TAC games are just bad in general, but I've never thought that).
Just goes to show not everyone has the same taste!

The "other bases" puzzles were actually the easy part for me. More difficult were some of the pattern matching puzzles where you have to collect tiles scattered around the landscape and then match them up to open door locks. And in the last part of the game you have a whole new level of difficulty navigating the "city," where intersections might have anywhere between 3 and 6 exits and some areas looked very similar to one another. It was a very challenging game, but I enjoyed it and I'm glad to hear someone else did too.

Rama is one of my all-time favorite games, but I seem to recall that it got pretty good reviews at the time. One of the big game magazines gave it a rating of somewhere in the 90's. I was in the computer field, so the different number bases posed no problem for me. The pattern matching was fun because the game was very forgiving that way; if you got it wrong, you just got another to try right away.
I think the game tanked in the market because of the number puzzles, though, and that's still a shame because there was supposed to be a sequel to let us know what happened to the characters. Not as bad as Dreamfall, but still bad enough.
Nobody has wanted me to walk the plank so far for my remarks above about Temujin. Maybe I'm safe after all.

Crime Stories was a great game in my opinion but I've seen reviews that weren't very optimistic.

Jldcat, I'm with you. I played the European release and thoroughly enjoyed it. Many of the reasons I liked it were the very reason others didn't.

When I first started playing games I didn't have a PC (I had a PS1) & relied on magazines! I think not just 1 game, but quite a few were panned that I went ahead & got regardless (by then I had worked out that most publications contained a hatred of AGs anyway & the more they hated it the more I would like it! (It worked!) These included Dracula - The Last Sanctuary (which I loved) & most of anything produced by Cryo (someone commented that they liked any AG except for Cryo games!) For me they have a particular style which I liked! I have enjoyed all of the ones I have come across: Atlantis 1 & 2, Egypt 1,2 & 3, China, Aztec etc. My favourite was Versailles - the graphics were terrible but it was such a good story!!!

The first Agatha Christie game got bad reviews by some, but it has become one of my favorite games. Starship Titanic also has a special place in my gaming library.

I usually never read reviews of adventure games from major gamesites like Gamespot, IGN or other sites, since these sites normally dislike or give bad reviews to adventure/puzzle games. I usually go by the reviews from this site , adventuregamers.com and justadventure.com, since I feel that these sites have a better take on what makes adventures good or even great that the major gamesites like gamespot.com has.

Adam I would have to agree with that one as well. In fact both Agatha Christie titles, ATTWN and MOTOE didn't receive very good reviews. However i am a fan of AC and i absolutely loved both. I don't pay attention to reviews, i will not buy/disregard a game due to reviews, i will play the demo or get opinion from friends who have tried the game and i know their opinion is reliable.

I'm almost to a point where I know I'll like a game because of bad reviews from the general gaming sites. They always hate the 1st person point and click puzzlers that I tend to enjoy.

For me it was A Quiet Weekend in Capri. When it first came out a lot of people didn't seem to like it. I got so hooked on it I played for hours every day. As more and more people played it, it seemed to gain in popularity. I can't wait for Anacapri.

Temujin. The reviews crucified it, and perhaps they were right to do so, but I perversely loved it.

For some strange reason, every game that i like, whatever the genre, seems to get not so good reviews. However some of the so called "greats" which got good reviews and i tried, i either uninstalled them in the first 20 minutes or finished them so that i would just finish them, and not particularly liked them.

I can only recall one really bad review of the game - it was a real stinker (loved the game myself). What ever became of BJ (Saighman)? I haven't seen hide or hair of him in years. For me the review was BloodRayne (very nasty review) - once again I loved the game.

Hi InlandAZ Sorry. I'm probably talking more player "opinions" than formal "reviews" As I recall, a fair few people definitely weren't impressed
