Hi deliterman -- the Director's Cut answers some of your questions. Will you eventually play it, or would you want some of the answers in a spoiler tag?

Hi deliterman --

Ending Spoiler for Scratches

Click to reveal..
The creature in the basement (at least in one explanation) is Robin, the child that has been hidden all these year.

it didn't look like robin , not with those glowing eyes , he looked much to old to be robin and much to dark after all those years with out any sun but thats just me..i think that guy ate robin!!

Deliterman --

Click to reveal..
I suspect that the glowing eyes are meant to represent the fact that the demon-like "spirit" that had invaded the mask has been transferred to Robin. Robin appears to have some sort of horrible skin condition (perhaps due to living in a cellar for years?) that makes it hard to determine exactly how old he is.

I think it is Robin, though other interpretations are certainly possible.

If you do ever manage to get ahold of the Director's Cut, I think the added material would interest you.
