Hi All,

I find the fact that Fate By Numbers a free indie game was done in FMV. This is my favorite type of game yet none have come out as all the game develpers have given it up saying it's just too expensive to do FMV's. So if it's so expensive how can an indie developer create one and a free one to boot. Curious isn't it?

Regards,
Barry

Fate by Numbers, I believe it was a student project so they had access to all sorts of equipment in the school. It's also a relatively short game compared to full length games (e.g. GK2: Beast Within). The production quality of Fate by Numbers is great for an indy game but if I were to pay retail price, I'd expect better quality FMV, graphics, acting and a much much longer gameplay.

I can definitely see how the costs would add up with FMV though for a full length release. Every single time your character interacts with an object, it needs to be acted, filmed, processed and edited.

I didn't really follow the retirement of FMV by developers but perhaps it was a combination of costs and demand from consumers? I love FMV (GK2 being my favourite FMV game) but FMV does reduce interactivity within a game.

Fate by Numbers is a great game. One of the best freeware games I've played.

To add to Misa's comments: I'm sure all of the actors were unpaid volunteers (friends and family). This, along with being able to use the school resources, probably helped to keep the costs down.

I think you don't see commercial FMV games anymore because they just went out of style and aren't popular enough to justify the costs.

However, there are three commercial FMV games I know of being developed:

http://www.yoomurjak.com/ (from the people behind the Agon series)

http://www.darkstar.gs/ (one of my most anticipated games and one of the most ambitious projects I've ever seen)

http://www.anima-ppd.com/ (Conspiracies 2; I know nothing about this game)

I liked Fate by numbers too! Adventure games with live acting are high on my list. I also played GK2, the beast within..very good!
Looked at 'Yoomurjaks ring' trailer thumbsup another wanna have!!

I understand the costs are high to make these kind of games, but i just love those smile wave

Anyone remember x-files the game, that was nicely done in fmv back in the 90's it had the real moulder and scully in acting their hearts out as well, the story was nicely done too and was a proper point and click adv game. smile

I played it on the playstation 1 as i didnt have a pc at the time but im sure the pc version was the same so its all good.

Actually enough time has passed that i cant remember it all so i might try hunting it down, its a 7 cd game tho i hope its come out on dvd now, less disc swapping lol. smile

I am having one heck of a time trying to get this game to download. I have DSL but it still shows 2 hours + for the download. The time factor is not the problem the problem is that it gets half way finished and then it times out and cuts off. I have tried two diffferent sources and I am currently using Game Spot and it's at the half way point again....wish me luck.

lexxy, have you tried Gamer's Hell?
http://www.gamershell.com/pc/fate_by_numbers/downloads.html

If you have a torrent client the Fate By Numbers site has a torrent available as well.

I have tried both sources and for some reason it gets to about 46% completion and it times out. I so want to play the game but I don't know what else to try.

Use a download manager with resume support if your having problems. Something like "free download manager" might be good.

SketterUK,
Thanks so much for your help but alas I still can not get the download even with the download manager. I guess the only way I will be able to play it is if someone sends me the game in a zip file and Idon't even know if that is possible. One site had a large and small download file but I don't know how small it was, thanks anyway for your help.

lexxy, curious that your download times out. Perhaps a heavy load on that particular mirror site? I'm downloading right now from Gamer's Hell (the 3rd North American mirror - Central US - 25% server load currently)

I'll let you know how it works out.

ETA: lexxy, my download from Gamer's Hell works fine. You may want to try it again but do not choose the overloaded mirror (the first one). Choose a server with a lower percentage of users.

If i lived in the USA where you are id probably burn the game to a disc and send it to you but im in the UK so thats kinda hard to do cos the postage will be big.

Maybe a fellow boomber near where you are will do it tho?
