Now, I'm no prude and certainly not squeamish (big horror film fan) but I'm playing through Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened just now and I found myself shocked and disgusted at a certain moment in it - the 'contents' of the 'item' on the altar, if you catch my drift - just because it was so unexpected, and a very 'bleurgh' moment.

It got me wondering - adventure games are usually quite tame compared to, say, first person shooters - so what would other folks here say was the most gruesome moments they'd experienced?

Now Playing:
Law & Order: Double or Nothing
Condemned: Criminal Origins

Hi,
I really try to check a game for that type of content before playing it. It seems it's become okay to incorporate dead bodies in Adventure games as long as it doesn't show them being shot, etc.
It did bother me when I played Nibiru to see the body in the tub, and I guess that's mild compared to what some have.
I would venture a guess that many developers have never actually seen a dead body as well as many gamers out there.

Hi Slarti (do you mind if I abbreviate your Member name?)

That moment in The Awakened was the most shocking moment I've encountered in adventure gaming. But then, I usually avoid games that have serious horror (I haven't played the Silent Hill series, for instance).

Hmmm. Now that I think about it, there were a few scenes in Shady Brook that were close in terms of the shock factor.

The murder scene in Post Mortem, no question for me.

I didn't care for some of the disfigurements in Sanitarium, and the murder in Indigo Prohecy was gross.

If you want to be shocked you should try playing Phantasmagoria (1). When her head gets cut in half and you actually see it, well that scared the bejesus out of me.

Just replayed it - and I have agree on that one.

As I recall (and it's been awhile) Zork Nemesis had a few as well.

The murder scene in Post Mortem is not for the squeamish, nor is the first murder in Still Life. But to me it made the game more realistic. scared eek

Among the ones I've played, I would have to say Phantasmagoria. Some horrifically gruesome things in that game and I can't think of anything that I have played since that has grossed me out more or made more of an impact.

I won't go into specifics as I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't played it, but what Cathy mentioned, well, there is much, much more. scared wave

I played NiBiRu and I don't remember a body in a tub so I reckon it didn't shock me. Also played Still Life and can't remember being shocked there either, but just from the crime scene tape on the box cover I would have been prepared for some icky scenes and quickly go past them. And, what's more, forget them.

To love is to be happy with!

There is a scene in GK2, THe Beast Within, where Gabe discovers that one of his acquaintances is a werewolf - he's in the bottom of a pit eating human body parts. You only see it for a split second, but since it's FMV, that makes it all the more gruesome.

I was going to say Faust--but you all just reminded me that Phantasmagoria was grossest. (is that a word?)

I just hit the spot in The Awakened that you're talking about, Slarti, and I certainly agree with you!!!

I think part of the reason it was so shocking was that it was completely unexpected...<bletch>

I was totally turned off by Pleurghburg Dark Ages by GASPOP for all the limbs being severed. I finally just quit playing.

Mystery of the Druids had some bad scenes but you could close your eyes until the music changed wave

So many games, so little time.

How about in Phantasmagoria the glass bottle neck in the eyeball. The only thing that's ever made me sick about a game is the movement. eek

Hi smile

I must be a strange person .... Bwahahaha .... I haven't yet played a game I found so shockingly gruesome it put me off .... and I've played those mentioned in this thread woozy

However, a sudden fright is another matter entirely. I've played several games where I've jumped out of my skin and then needed a moment to recover lol

Cheers.

Amount of horror and gore in descending order:

Phantasmagoria 1 and 2, Mystery of the Druids, Blackstone Chronicles, Black Dahlia, Ripper, Sanitarium, Zork Nemesis.

Despite the gruesomeness of the first two titles, I wouldn't have missed the experience. At least I can say that I have played such games.

I have to agree with Benedict here. Phantasmagoria attic scene was the one that bothered me the most.

I agree that Blackstone Chronicles had its 'gruesome' moments. I played this a long time back and don't remember any actual images being shocking, but ones imagination can 'gross one out' just with the suggestions made in that one. Also, how about the 'head in the jar' in Frankenstein, Through The Eyes Of A Monster? Kinda spooked me - but I did not "run for the bourbon bottle" laugh It kinda had a silly grin on it which is very freaky scared This thread is fun!

Heheh, I'm glad I started this thread!

I'm surprised to hear that Mystery of the Druids has some shocking moments. I was put off buying it by the quite awful box art which led me to believe it was aimed at pre-teens but since its quite cheap over here I might give it a bash.

In fact, I'm tempted to scour Amazon for a lot of the games mentioned here in case I can 'baag' a bargain!

By the way, Becky, you can abbreviate my name all ya like!

I haven't come across a game either where I have been put off by the content - but I thought the Blackstone Chronicles has quite a shocking, disturbing & ultimately very sad story - as it is a historical fact that some of the practices described in the story were to a degree carried out in real life.
