I don't know if I can explain this correctly, but this morning my husband booted up his computer and there were all these lines and the mouse made tails when you moved it and the picture resolution got larger and the color was off. I went into the device manager and clicked on the display card and got this message: " Windows stopped this device because it has reported a problem (Code 43)". We clicked when it asked if we wanted Windows to give a solution to to this problem and got this message:: "Could not load driver software". I went into the properties of the card and under Resources it said: "This device in't using any resources because it has a problem". The computer is only two years old but unhappily not under warranty by Dell any more. Can it be possible that the video card is shot? Thanks

It sure sounds like it. The on-board graphics on my computer went out about 2 seconds after it was out of warranty with exactly the same symptoms. I wasn't too upset, because I'd intended on installing a video card anyway.
Maybe one of the "experts" will know more...

Thanks for the information. I do have my old video card, a 256MB Nvidia GeForce 6800 GTO. Do you all think that I could put it in my husband's Dell Inspiron 531S, AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor, 32-bit OS? His card is a Nvidia GeForce 8300GS. Of course when I say "I" could put it in, I really mean somebody else could put it in, since I can't even open the tower case.

The computer is only two years old but unhappily not under warranty by Dell any more. Can it be possible that the video card is shot? Thanks It is possible that the card is no longer working - but... It's also possible that it's a driver issue. In general code 43 indicates a device failure, but checking the driver can't hurt at this point. Does the issue still occur in Safe-Mode (and did you recently update your drivers)? If it turns out to be the card, post the model number of the PC - someone can recommend a replacement for you. Edit - I do have my old video card, a 256MB Nvidia GeForce 6800 GTO. Do you all think that I could put it in my husband's Dell Inspiron 531S Assuming it has a PCI-X16 interface, maybe. I can't locate the power supply specs for that model, do you know it? And edit again - I just found one - and it's only 250 Watts, that'd be pushing it a bit.

Not so much less than 250 watts, but something that will work with a 250 watt power supply. Agp cards are more difficult to come by, almost daily. I did find this card: Here That card should be ok with your current power supply. I used a 6800 gt about a year ago, & Nvidia recommended a 350 watt power supply, & a 4 pin power connector.

Thank you CHAOS, not to show my ignorance, but what is an Agp card?

AGP stands for Accelerated Graphics Port. These were used in computers until about 2004, then were phased out, due to pci express coming in to use.Although agp motherboards are still being made today, support is next to non-existant out there.

It appears this 2 year old computer may have a PCI-X16 interface.

It appears this 2 year old computer may have a PCI-X16 interface. I'll 2nd that. That being the case, that does open doors a bit. From what I can gather, that model used integrated graphics. A new video card & power supply would be recommended. I found these, which should be good for just about everything. Video: Here Power Supply: Here

It appears this 2 year old computer may have a PCI-X16 interface. Yes, I believe it does - at least that's what I saw on Dell site (and why I mentioned that the 6800 may work if it had a PCI-E X16 interface). You need to visit Dell's support site and enter your service tag number. Dell supportYou'll be able to get a complete inventory of your PC there.

There appears to be more wrong than just the video card, or else the other problems are related to the card. I keep getting error messages, don't know what a lot of them are since it's hard to read the screen and the Explorer browser keeps throwing me off and so does Foxfire. I can't believe the whole computer could be down as it's only two years old. I know that it wasn't a high end machine, but come on, two years?

It's very hard to read the error messages because the screen is all messed up, but I've seen messages that tell me that Shockwave plug-in has performed an illegal action, one that says something about my explorer browser not working, one that says my firefox session was interrupted (I wasn't using firefox). I tried using the System Restore and it said that it was successful but everything is still blooey.

Also check to see if some of the caps on the mother board have gone bad. The caps will look like a small round cans and when they go bad you will see the tops of them bowing or popped open and sometimes there will be a brownish fluid coming out of the tops of them. If this is what you find you will either have to replace the mother board or find a local electronics shop that can replace the caps on the motherboard. Also the power supply could possibly be going bad. Bad caps on older mother boards is very common. Here are some links as to what bad caps look like. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Badcaps-tayeh-4.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Vp6_blown_capacitor.jpg http://www.pcstats.com/articleimages/200302/capblown_3.jpghttp://www.thenakedpc.com/dan/Bulging_Capacitors/close-up.jpg

Like Donald says, you can go inside the computer and see if any of the capacitors on the motherboard are bulging. But if they all look OK, I'd try memtest. You can check for bad memory and bad motherboard by running either ***memtest86*** or ***memtest86+***. You download the memtest .iso image file (on a computer other than the one that's having problems) and burn the .iso image to CDR. (Be sure to burn it as an .iso rather than just copying the .iso file to CDR.) Then boot off the CDR on the computer that's having problems and start memtest.

I brought the tower into the computer repair guy this morning. I don't think that I would have been able to to test anything since I kept getting thrown off the internet. At least the diagnostic test is free and if it costs too much to repair I guess that we'll have to ditch the machine, but I'm really upset because it won't be two years old until August.
