Absolutely breathtaking, as expected, but more so. Always pushing the envelope, that BFG!
I'm not sure about BFG-Guy's earlier reference to The Shining, though, with respect to this game. Even without Jack Nicholson, that's enough to scare the pee out of me!
Ya'll are going to have to wade in first and give me a scariness rating before I even demo this one. I got nightmares from the television commercials for Willard!

I am with MrLipid…not real sure how these two different formats will mix. Sure hope that Big Fish does not ruin the winning formula they have been so successful with in the MCF series to date. Judy and I are NOT real big fans of the “Reality TV” type shows that seem to be so popular now and we have misgivings as to how you might mix them into an iHog. I guess that we will see (if that is what they have done) when the new MCF game is released. We both Love the MCF series (it and the HE series) are what got us hooked on Casual Games (& Big Fish) in the first place. I guess that Puzzledone (over on the BF forums) said it best, last month, when talking about the latest HE release…we have come to expect certain things from these type of series and are disappointed when they are changed too drastically.

Well - I don't know what I was expecting, but this video definitely wasn't it.
It totally took me by surprise (in a very good way)and to say I'm intrigued is to put it mildly.
The footage kind of reminded me a little of The Blair Witch Project.
BFG-Guy you have me watching and waiting for this one.

Hope it is OK to post this. It is great news that Picman posted over on the Big Fish Forums
"A "little bird" told me there may be a special "Big Fish Game Club Collector's Edition" version of this game out in time for Thanksgiving ...more details should be coming tomorrow on the BFG Blog."
Picman
More details should be coming today on the BFG Blog as he wrote this on 16 Nov.

I'd be happy to spend more than 6.99 on this one if it takes a couple credits to buy. I can't wait, especially if it means getting it for the long weekend. Ana

Hey Oldman I can't divulge any specifics of the game but I don't think you have to worry about the winning formula being broken. This may be the best one yet. The story is well integrated into the game and it all makes sense when you play it. It's a nice loooong game too Hugs, Margie B

Hi Margie,
Thanks for all the info. Been browsing all the “stuff” posted since I first saw the 1st post on the new MCF game an hour or so ago. “Very interesting…” but I am afraid that it may be taking too big a bite ($20 bucks, almost our entire budget for the month) out of our entertainment budget for a single game. Judy and I LOVE the MCF games, and have been looking forward to this release, but for the added benefit of having a built-in Strategy Guide (something that we never buy anyway…we always use the free T&T’s if we need them) and the other “extras” mentioned don’t really seem to add to the game itself. As of right now, we are probably going to have to wait the extra few weeks for the regular release.
I must say, though I understand the “marketing” reasons for doing this, am a bit disappointed in your boss (Picman) for promising one thing (a new MCF game by Thanksgiving) and then delivering another. No, I am not angry about it…just disappointed. The Gaming Industry has been using this same tactic/technique for many years and you can be sure that if Big Fish does it all of the other casual game developers will start doing the same thing and we will end up back at the $20 buck price point (or higher) for decent games. As usual, just one “old” man’s opinion.

It is a bit strange that it was delayed until December, and it is still claimed the $6.99 version is not ready- however there is a version ready with bells and whistles for next week.
If the basic version is still being worked on I don't know what to think- how can this enhanced version be ready? Confused indeed.

:)Whoo Hoo ! I am playing casebook snake in the grass, and worried because I don't have anything else like it to play and I am toward the end of the game. Dire sounds like it may be more like Casebook and oh I love the video format of the game. I will also be standing in line to buy Dire and hope it will be this week! However many of credits it takes I am with Ana, and agree it is worth it from what I have viewed in the video. Can anyone tell me if this will have Interactive Hidden objects when we find them we use them? I hope there is more interactive than just find the hidden object that doesn't even apply to the storyline. For instance finding plungers!

The gamezebo newsletter states that 2 versions will be available on BFG.
"We can finally share with you the release dates for Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove, the hotly anticipated sixth game in the Mystery Case Files hidden object/adventure series from Big Fish Games Studios. For the first time in the series' history, Big Fish Games will be releasing two different versions of the game: the Collector's Edition will launch on Nov. 25 for $19.99, followed by the standard version in early December which will sell for the usual $6.99."
So my question is What is the Collector's version?

Oh! I didn't see it. Will the Collector's Edition be a large file? I hope not as I only have a very slow dial up ISP and cannot download them on Big Fish.Large file games will not complete for some reason and anyway some may take up to 30 hours. I cannot tie up my phone line . My only hope is that the games in which I cannot download on BF will be available at Spintop where I can use my download manager(GetRight) and can pause a lot.

The game has quite a bit of FMV so I will guess it's a fairly large download. You can, as L4L stated, pause with the BFG Game/Download Manager. Ana

Penny, I think you can pause with the BFG game manager too. But in any case, I don't think it's a "large file" as in the large file adventure games. But, I certainly don't know that for sure Yes the game manager has a pause but in any large file game which I try to download whenever I pause it it goes back to the beginning of the download.Or it will get to 99% and then stop. Small file games load just fine. You see, my dial up ISP knocks me offline after about 8 hours so any large file game progress is lost.I have tried everything that customer service has suggested but to no avail. So what I usually do is buy the game with a back up disk. Then the game installs just fine.

Jody, according to the BFG website, the in game extras will be The Collector's Edition launches several weeks early and includes secret bonus levels, additional puzzles, and other intriguing "extras". In addition, the strategy guide will be accessible while still in the game. There will be other extras also, but the in-game extra's are bonus levels, puzzles, and some surprises.

Penny, have you tried ordering the larger file games on cd. That is what I do for the games I want to put on my laptop which only has dialup connection- takes only seconds to activate the game after installing from the cd. If something happens you also don't have to go through all those hours of downloading again. Sorry if you already thought of this.

MCF: DG and MCF:DG Collector's Edition will be available on CD as they are both under 600MB (The capacity of a CD ROM).
There is extra game play. The standard release will be the complete story of Dire Grove. The Collector's Edition bonus levels will be unlocked as you discover them and are not directly related to Dire Grove, but do reveal secrets about MCF story lines in the past and future!!

I thought every game at Big Fish was $6.99? I know by reading this thread the game is larger than the usual game, but how can they advertise every game $6.99 ?

Thanks L4L but my problem is with Big Fish advertising Every Game, Every Day $6.99. It does not state Collector Editions are extra. Maybe when this game is released they will change that on their website, because to me its false advertising.

Well, I think there are exceptions to every rule. I'm sorry it bothers you though. I didn't think twice about it, but then, I expect to pay more for a collector's edition

We also have games daily at $2.99 and even $.99 occasionally. The full MCF: Dire Grove itself as it was originally designed costs only $6.99. The Collector's Edition is more than a game, you are getting all the extras. Some will love them, others will get the $6.99 'game only' product. We have increased what we offer, not decreased it. If you want to buy a flight to Hawaii, and the airline says all flights are $299 (I wish!)but also offered a vacation package for $999 that included a hotel and rental car, that is ok. You can still buy the flight for $299, but if you want the extras in the package deal, it is $999. Not trying to be controversial, just trying to explain the difference via an anology. The $6.99 MCF: Dire grove will be the full game, we are not taking anything away, and you will love it!

The only game I have a collectors edition of is Spore. That and the standard Spore version were released on the same date so the option was there, but everyone got to experience the game on opening day together. Unfortunatley loyal customers are going to be behind playing MCF unless they fork out additional funds for stuff they may not even be interested in. If both versions are released together, then all members are happy Getting the game on release date is a big thing to some so it is disappointing.

If you want to buy a flight to Hawaii, and the airline says all flights are $299 (I wish!)but also offered a vacation package for $999 that included a hotel and rental car, that is ok. You can still buy the flight for $299, but if you want the extras in the package deal, it is $999. Not quite the same thing, you would still get the trip to Hawaii the same time. And the trip would be exactly like the Vacation trip without Hotel and car rental. Not trying to be controversial, just trying to explain the difference via an anology. The $6.99 MCF: Dire grove will be the full game, we are not taking anything away, and you will love it! How can it be a full game if it doesnt offer the bonus features like extended gameplay? And yes I probably will love the version I get at $6.99 whenever it may come out.

Yes Sherryah, the only difference is that you cannot use credits to pay for it. Ana

Continue the line of disappointed... We are so used to see the BFG as the best site for their prices and customer service. That's why this release of only the collectors edition of MCF for $19.99 for the Club members seems so out of character. I hope it will not become a permanent policy of the marketing their new games. I'm very disappointed with the big delay of the regular version's release.

Hi BFG-Guy,
I know that I am a “newbie” here on GameBoomers and don’t want to speak out of turn, but just felt that I had to post in support of catsmom, BellaRosa and Springchicken. As I said in a previous post to Margie, in this thread, I too am disappointed in the delay of the regular version’s release date. Paul, you have a great site, the best customer service in the Casual Game Industry and some of best people working for/with you, but I think that you “missed the boat” with the way this release is being handled.
BellaRosa & Springchicken probably said it better than I can, the real bone of contention here seems to be that those that only want the “complete” game itself while the one with all the “extras” is made available on, what we have been lead to believe, the regular release date and the “others” are going to have to wait. I am 65 years old and have been a “hard-core” gamer since back in the “main-frame” days (heck as a tech I worked on the old “Pong” machines) so I understand the marketing concept behind the “Collector’s Edition” idea (and I might add it is a good one). Your “analogy” does kind of fail due to the fact that you are not offering them both at the same time. Just one “old” man’s opinion.
P.S. Just a thought, but it might have worked better if the members could have bought the Collector’s Edition with 2 credits instead of the usual 1. Some of us buy our extra credits once a month (when we get our retirement checks…and plan our budgets accordingly).

catsmom, it's evident that any further clarification that could be given will not be acceptable to you, so consider it duly noted that you are unhappy with the decisions they made in the release and we'll move on from there. BrowneyedTigre my post was not directed to you. I understand the concept of game developers wanting to make more money on their games. But when they want to sell their games on a site that advertises All Games for $6.99 then that is what I believe to be wrong. They added extras purposely to get more money for their game. I also understand the reasoning for releasing the Collectors Edition first, because if they were offering both editions at the same time then fewer people would buy the Collectors Edition. The 1912 Titanic game offered wallpaper and didnt charge extra for it. And I didnt see Herinteractive tripling their price of Nancy Drew games for the bonus scenes after the credits ran, or their preview of the next game. So BrownEyedTigre please Duly Note this is what I am unhappy about and then we'll move on.

I've hesitated to become involved in this discussion, but perhaps I can contribute a perspective that might be helpful.
I think it's important to remember that BFG is both a game portal AND a game developer.
The fine customer service and $6.99 price point are among the many strengths of the portal side of the business.
The consistently cutting edge, technically unmatched, "out of the ballpark" games in the MCF, HE and Drawn series that are developed by BFG are strengths of the developer side of the business.
It's clear to me that, in the new release methodology, the developer side is doing exactly what every other game developer does - it's marketing its products at the highest possible price upon release and then decreasing the price as time passes, giving those early adopters, who are willing to purchase at a higher price and without an opportunity to demo the product, some extra goodies as well.
To me, that's no different than being the first on your block to own an iPhone, a Kindle, a flat screen TV, one of numerous game systems or pretty much anything else - if you want to have it first, you're going to have to pay top dollar for it.
Like many of you, I've bought a number of games from BFG. And I think most of us would agree there is an incredible range in the production quality of the games, despite the fact that all have been purchased for $6.99 or less.
If we want these extraordinarily high quality games to continue to be produced - and who doesn't? - it's unreasonable to expect the company to limit its ability to recover the equally extraordinarily high costs it occurs in developing them simply because it also operates a game portal business as well.
Unlike that nifty new toy that we all want but which not all of us may be able to afford - or to be able to afford right away - at least we know that these games will be produced and ultimately will be available at a price we all can afford!
P.S. The two posts immediately preceding this one were added while I was writing. I **must** become less long-winded!

GPM, I understand your way of thinking on this but let me try to explain mine. The comments are not directed at you but Big Fish.
There are a lot of great games being made out there that are cutting edge and cost a lot to make. Big Fish quelled the opportunity for those developers to make more money on them at their portal when they changed their game pricing policy to $6.99 for all games. So, do Big Fish members only have substandard games other than the ones that BF now deem good enough for them to charge extra which happen to be their own?
Apart from that, the biggest issue is how members are being treated in this instance. I have spent in the last 12 months- $3000 of my currency there- I feel I have done my part to contribute, but now I am not entitled to a game on the day it is released unless I pay money for extras I do not want.
This is unacceptable to me. I am not asking for the enhanced edition at the same price- just the basic version at the same time.
BFG-Guys call- upset some of his members- the amount will not be determined until this goes live- or keep everyone happy by offering both versions.
It sseems a simple enough way to please everyone and keep Big Fish known for what it currently has a reputation for. Looking after members.

Thank You BellaRosa!
You hit it right on the nose. Exactly the point I was trying to make in my roundabout way. My disappointment was that Judy and I felt that all of the pre-game release hype had led us to believe that we would be getting a new MCF game by the end of this month and we had set aside a credit for it which we fully intended to use (sight unseen) about 1 minute after midnight the day it was released (as we have done with all of the HE, MCF & Azada series). Then the day this thread was started we learn (both here & on the Big Fish site) that we were going to have to wait until the “first part of December” for it; and if we wanted it before then it was going to cost 3 times as much.
@ GPM, all of your points are valid and good ones; and I was well aware of ALL of them before your post. In fact I agree with them, but they really didn’t have anything to do with what I was disappointed in. Oh, and don’t become any less “long-winded” (as you put it) in the future, I always have to type my posts up in MSWord prior to posting in order to get my thoughts straight in my mind. So take your time and say what you want to say. I for one am very happy to listen to your opinion.
I do hope that BFG-Guy, does keep reading this thread so that he sees how some of his customers feel about what his company is doing. Big Fish is a leader (if not THE Leader) in the Casual Game Industry, both as a portal & developer. So where his company goes the others will follow. I do hope that this is not the beginning of an upwardly spiraling “price point” for ALL casual games. We don’t mind paying more for a Good Long game that Judy & I feel we get our moneys worth in game play & re-playability, but that is not the case (as you said GPM) with so many of them…2 or 3 hours at the most; not much bang for $20 bucks or more.

Hi oldman-- you are making your points extremely well if you ask me.
I typed up a long post but deleted it- I have a lot more thoughts and feelings on this but a bit too upset right now to post more about it as I am starting to come across too emotional on the issue.
As you say, I hope BFG-Guy takes what we say into consideration.

I have read these posts, and can understand everyones point of view. I would just like to add one more comment. I do not believe that the customers should tell a company how to run their business. This can become a difficult problem for the company. As the old saying goes "you can't please all of the people all of the time". I feel BigFish has gone out of it's way to make people happy, but there comes a time when they have to make decisions that are the best for the company.I would buy the Collectors Edition if I feel it is what I want(and these usually cost more than the regular release). If not, I will wait for the regular edition. Either way I know that BigFish will release an exceptional product.

I agree with Gordon...let's lighten up!!! Personally, I'm just delighted that BigFish exists. If I don't want to spend $20, I'll take the $6.99 one. Big Fish is a wonderful company...let's continue to support them and be grateful for the fun and happiness we've experienced. Love, Teddo

Keep in mind that the Collector's Edition does not even take up a new release slot as it is not just a game. We will be releasing a lot of great new games every day for $6.99 including on the 25th!!...even games like the new Amazing Adventures (a great HOG) that the developer launched and sold on their site for $20 for the first few months. When Dire Grove does launch a few weeks later it will be the new game of the day and it will be at $6.99 and it will be an amazing and long game experience. We are not taking anything away, we are adding extra stuff for the avid fans to help pay for the 7 figure development cost of MCF games. The people who buy the Collector's Edition are actually subsidizing the people who only pay $6.99. Once you get the $6.99 version and realize the incredible game it is, you can thank the people who paid $19.95 for enabling that level of quality and depth, all for the price of a latte (yes, I live in Seattle the coffee capital of the world so everything is priced relative to a latte ) Please hold your judgment until after you try the $6.99 game...it is the full deal!

Thanks again for all you do BFG-Guy.You run a first class operation. I think I will help susidize the $6.99 people. I have in the past spent $19.99 in the store,(or $20 in a slot machine ) on a casual game and would have no problem paying the same for this game.I am really looking forward to this game. thracia

Are we gonna have a problem downloading this great game? Everyone is going to be doing it almost all at the same time. I'm getting the Collector's Edition and can hardly wait to start playing.

Yahoo! Thanks for the Thanksgiving gift of a great game with wonderful surprises. I have been a BFG member since 2007 and a Beta tester of several of your games and love the idea of getting a game ahead of the pack! Before BFG, $19.95 was the standard price of a d/l game. Many games in the stores were much more. It has been such a joy in my life to be able to afford games again that paying a one time $19.95 to BFG is a treat for me and a token of my thanks to BFG! I am especially happy for something new to puzzle over as I just had to put my wonderful mare, Melicia del Rosa, to sleep. She was sick, weak and unable to stand up anymore, so there was only the choice of ending her live with dignity and me by her side, or letting her suffer. I rescued her 11 years ago when she was going to be sold to the meat packers and she has been a wonderful friend and companion. I miss her so and have been in tears so escaping into a game is a blessed relief. Happy Trails, HorseDancer

L4L,you sound like me, even if I have no time to play the game, I have to download it immediatley. Has to do with my problem of instant gratification. I also don't mind paying the higher price to help pay for the cost of making a game like this. Sometimes I think we don't always realize how much things cost to make.
PS: Sorry for your loss HorseDancer thracia

Hi BFG-Guy Well that is disappointing that the money I have spent to date with your company counts for nothing towards development costs of future games and seems I have wasted a good deal of it for nought. I certainly would not want to be subsidised by anyone, and in my delusion thought I had been paying my own way well over the call of duty. I guess I will pass on RTR with snow.

Hi BFG-Guy, Now you made me feel cheap for not wanting to spend $20.00 for the casual even super -duper game download. I thought we all members of your Jumbo club contributed a lot to support your company by sheer amount of the games we are buying every month. I'm not sure you would get the same profit from a lot fewer people going to buy this expensive version. Sorry, but I don't see the point to be thankful to them.

so much for your kind words my friends. I am writing a tribute to my mare about her life and foals that she took such great care of and loved so much. It will take awhile, and in the meantime I am very grateful for the distraction of games! All the best, HorseDancer

Just my 2-cents worth - "so what?" Either buy the $20 game or wait for the $7 game - either way we still get a terrific game. Am I happy that there are 2 different release dates? No, but then I am not going to be suffering from this either. Life will go on - get over it people. There are too many important things to be concerned about without adding something so trivial as a release date for the next installment of the MCF games. Will I purchase the Special Edition? I will be purchasing this game on Nov 25th! I gave it a lot of thought and if it had been a game BFG would not be getting, I would have at least considered spending the $20 at SpinTop like I did for Mortimer Beckett #2. So YES, I am going to buy the Special Edition on Nov 25th because I love BFG more than SpinTop - and I am thankful for all the great games I have purchased for $6.99 and even some at $.99 and $2.99 Life is too short to be this upset about a release date (or two) for a casual game.

When I bought MCF Huntsville and Prime Suspects in Best Buy, when they first came out, I paid $19.99 each for them(still have the price on the box). I did not learn about BigFish gameclub until Ravenhearst. thracia

Can't wait until the 25th and see what Dire Grove has in store for us. I have paid 20-30 dollars for a lot of game in the past 15 or so years of gaming, some even 40 if I really wanted it or it was a present for a birthday or such. This was before BFG gave us wonderful games at great prices. So for one game I will treat myself. I may not get to complete Novemberfest this time. I totally understand the money issue as both my husband and I lost jobs in 2008 and still not earning the same as then, so money can only be spread so far. But I have usually paid at least 20 dollars for most of my adventure games, some I didn't even play because they just didn't suit me, or I haven't even gotten around to yet. So extra fun and the strategy guide to help before the walkthrough or tips are out is worth the money. I just wished that I had the time to replay Ravenhearst and Madame Fate as I did last year and RTR too, to get the story fresh in my mind again. I am so thankful for all the quality games I have gotten from BFG for 6.99 instead of 20 dollars or more, so one game is really not such a bad idea, especially when a short time later it will be 6.99.
So sorry Horsedancer for your loss.

To All, There are 31 images available on Gamespot Web Site. Looks like the in-game shots were taken from the Collector’s Edition of the game, with the rest being concept art shots. It looks like the game is going to be of the same quality as RTR or better. http://www.gamespot.com/pc/puzzle/mysterycasefilesdiregrove/images/0/?tag=screenshotHere is what was posted over on Big Fish Forums in regards to what is different between the CE ($19.99) and the regular edition ($6.99). http://forums.bigfishgames.com/posts/list/65193.pageWanted to post this so everyone could take a look and make up your own mind as to whether you wanted to wait for a few days or not. It looks to me that it is going to be a Great Game no matter which one you decide to get. As I have said before, just one "old" man's opinion.

I also like the idea of the in game strategy guide. Now I won't have to shut down the game the get answers. I did not want to see too many of the screenshots, I want to be surprised(but I did look at a couple). Awesome.

Thracia, Like you, I want to be surprised too I am not looking (I hope I can stand the suspense LOL) I cannot wait...what time will this be available for us NYers? Dire Grove goes up at 12:01 a.m. PST on the 25th, so for New York it would be 3:01 a.m. on the 25th.

Sly One, I am just a big kid (with a job).I also look foward to Xmas.Still my favorite time of the year. I am jealous that you live on the West coast, and get to play this 3 hours earlier than us East coasters.
Darleen03, since I started playing these type of games, I have so been neglectig my AG's.

Now that we are getting so close to lift-off with the Dire Grove Collector's Edition, is there anyone in the know who could tell me how large the file size is for this game? I'm really curious! Marian, it's under 600MB: MCF: DG and MCF:DG Collector's Edition will be available on CD as they are both under 600MB (The capacity of a CD ROM).
There is extra game play. The standard release will be the complete story of Dire Grove. The Collector's Edition bonus levels will be unlocked as you discover them and are not directly related to Dire Grove, but do reveal secrets about MCF story lines in the past and future!!

Official System requirements published.
Recommended system requirements: OS: Windows XP/Vista/7 CPU: 2.0 GHz RAM: 1280 MB DirectX: 9.0 Hard Drive: 600 MB
Note: The game may run on lower spec systems but there is the chance of poor performance during video and high motion sequences.

Actually thracia, I am an East Coaster originally (Massachusetts) and still consider it home. Someday I will probably end up back there, but I sure am glad I'm on the West Coast now...... Barbara Thanks BFG-Guy for stopping in with the specifics. Always Great to hear from you. Barbara

Official System requirements published. Recommended system requirements: OS: Windows XP/Vista/7 CPU: 2.0 GHz RAM: 1280 MB DirectX: 9.0 Hard Drive: 614 MB Note: The game may run on lower spec systems but there is the chance of poor performance during video and high motion sequences. I imagine BFG-Guy will be burning the midnight oil. I seem to recall him saying that he's a night owl anyway. Absolutely. I got 8 hours into an early alpha and it crashed (it was an untested build), so I still do not know how it ends. I was about 2/3 the way through it, although I am not a real fast HOG person and refuse to skip any puzzles or get help, so I still do not know how it ends!

After looking forward to this game - I just found out yesterday that it uses lots more RAM than my 512 MB DDR. I have been putting off getting the new computer as it is such a hassle trying to load everything, but it looks like it is time. Have fun with this great new game everyone Happy Trails, HorseDancer

Hi L4L, I am thinking about that, but right now I am housebound - on oxygen from Congestive Heart Failure. I think I can call the place that has worked on my computer before and check it out. I Thanks for your help. HorseDancer

I am as disappointed as HorseDancer... except I excitedly (yet stupidly) bought it without checking the reqs. I assumed it was comparable to the last game, MCF: Return to Ravenhearst (which only required a 800 Mhz CPU and 512 MB of RAM). I have a 2.1 GHz CPU with maxed out RAM of 1024MB and a ATI Radeon X1550 AGP card. This game does indeed have poor performance on my machine. I wish I had read this thread earlier... and meanwhile I'll try not to obsess that my barely three year old desktop will soon be obsolete for even casual games.
