I received a nasty bug yesterday - I believe it's one of the malware variety

So very irritating - popups about every 30 seconds - warning me that files were infected and urging me to activate their protection program. The popups were size small, medium and large and then the entire screen was overtaken by porno or viagra sites... pretty funny, actually

I ran a complete Norton scan and came up with no risks, so I knew it was a fake, but couldn't run any installed games or install any new ones. Really couldn't do much of anything because the screen was taken over every 20-30 seconds by the popups

Has any one else enjoyed this experience?

Then ... today, it disappeared ... completely. Something like magic or maybe the 24-hour flu. Keeping my fingers crossed that it stays away.

Please let me know if you have information about these

Run this cleaner.

They don't go away on their own.

I'm moving you to Glitches where the computer gurus hang out.

Malwarebytes is first in the line of defense!

Ana is right - they don't just "go away." They will be lurking somewhere. Start with Malwarebytes and see what it finds.

Wow thanks Ana.
I ran it and found 12 "naughty" things which I deleted.

thanks so much for the link to this cleaner

I ran it and found 20 infected objects - quarantined and deleted - interesting to see that there was one that couldn't be deleted but marked as 'delete on reboot'

and presto, after rebot, it was gone

wahoo

Excellent menahune and cazziejoe! bravo You should run this and other scans on a monthly basis. If you develop a manageable routine it becomes second nature to keep the computers clean.
Glad you got them off.

I do run Spybot but I guess it didn't catch them.

Hi, Ana!

I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes a few weeks ago, and would highly recommend it. It's now part of my regular routine, along with Norton Anti-Virus.

I am unfamiliar with Malwarebytes. Is it free shareware or do I have to purchase it? Will it run okay with my anti-virus softwear? I had something called Yoog that installed itself on my computer and took over my Google search. I removed Firefox and it went away. When I tired to re-install Firefox, it was back. Maybe Malwarebytes will get rid of it?

Thanks

Malwarebytes is completely free and will coexist with your antivirus software (it runs as a standalone process).

Not sure if it removes Yoog -

Edit -

Here's a link with removal instructions: Yoog Removal Instructions for FireFox and Internet Explorer

It's an old thread, but may still apply.

InlandAZ,

Thanks for the info. I will look into it. I have tried several things to remove Yoog and nothing worked. Some of it was too technical for me. Right now, as long as I use IE, it appeas to be gone or dormant. When I try to re-install Firefox it is back.

I will use Malwareebytes, too, and see what it does.
