I am in the famine chamber.Even though she sort of explained what to do I am not having much success.Any hints for this part?

I haven't played this game and wasn't able to find a walkthrough by Googling. Let's wait and see if anyone is currently playing and can help us here.

Maybe I am getting old but I think there needs to be a better explanation of the game goals,perhaps a tutorial in the beginning.I was happy when I saw the myst-like graphics but now I am just getting frustrated.
